About me
Hello – thank you for visiting my profile.
I retired as a doctor a few years ago – and since then I have been working as a clinical hypnotherapist. While I was working in medicine I developed interest and experience in using Hypnosis to treat a variety of physical and mental health issues. Because I enjoyed this aspect of my work so much, I decided to carry on after my retirement as a doctor. Since then I have been working for Marie Curie Hospice and Edinburgh as a hypnotherapist and also receive referrals from Maggies Cancer Centre. Over the past five years or so I have built up a small and manageable private practice in addition.
I have a particular interest in using Hypnosis to help individuals to live a full and enjoyable life in spite of sometimes complex issues. These include individuals with FND (Functional Neurological Disorder) and ADHD. I enjoy helping people to develop a healthy curiosity about their minds, brains and body and their ability to influence their health and experience positively across-the-board.
I do hypnotherapy both virtually and face-to-face. (face-to-face is in Harmony 10 Joppa Road Edinburgh EH15 2EU).
Training, qualifications & experience
I qualified in medicine in 1977. I first qualified in Hypnosis in 1982. Since then I have done various trainings with the British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis (BSCAH); A medical diploma with the London College of Clinical Hypnosis, and strategic therapy with Dr Michael Yapko amongst others. I am accredited with BSCAH, which is the only organisation UK wide which only trains health professionals in Hypnosis. We believe that it is important to seek out treatment from a professional who is clinically trained (as a doctor, dentist, nurse, psychologist etc prior to undertaking the hypnosis training) –so that hypnosis is used as an adjunct to other established treatments rather than something completely separate.
I am a trustee of the British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis, and I am the Honorary Secretary of the charity.
As a tutor for BSCAH, I teach health professionals (doctors, dentists, psychologists, nurses etc) to use hypnosis within their clinical work – This is stimulating and exciting. Hypnosis is becoming more and more acceptable within environments (especially anaesthesia and dentistry) because of more favourable outcomes e.g. pain relief, less anxiety, shorter recovery times et cetera
Member organisations
The British Society of Clinical Hypnosis (BSCH) is a national professional body whose aim is to promote and assure high standards in the practice of hypnotherapy.
There are various types of membership of BSCH, including associate members, full members, diplomats and fellows.
Registration demands good quality training, ethical practice and adherence to a code of conduct.

Information about health conditions (*)
Hypnotherapy can enhance the well-being of individuals diagnosed with serious medical conditions, but should not take the place of medical treatment and advice. If you have been diagnosed with - or suspect you may have - any of these conditions, please speak to your doctor before starting hypnotherapy.
Other areas of hypnotherapy I deal with
ADHD in adults, and its associated emotional dysregulation, depression and anxiety.

Further information
From mid May 2023, I will be able to offer face-to-face hypnotherapy in Portobello/Joppa and Edinburgh. I couldn't do this over the lockdown period and so I am very much looking forward to this new opportunity.
