About me

My name is Katie Churms. I am a fully qualified (HPD, DSFH, BA Hons), accredited and insured clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist. My practice is based in Potton, Bedfordshire but I can also work with you online from anywhere in the world. I specialise in supporting people feeling anxious, overwhelmed and stressed but can support with a wide range of symptoms. I am so passionate about the solution focused approach and have seen it change so many lives, including my own!

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines forward thinking talking therapy (taking elements of SFBT, CBT and NLP) and hypnosis and is a very modern and up to date approach based on the latest neuroscience. We work on moving forward and helping you to become the best version of yourself again, without the need to dwell on the past or focus on the problem. We focus on helping you to find solutions, reduce anxiety and stress levels, as well as changing behaviours and unhelpful thinking patterns. We also help you to understand how your brain works and why you feel and behave the way you do. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines both conscious and sub-conscious change.

Imagine feeling confident and in control every day. What difference would that make to your life? What would you be able to achieve?

I work with people suffering from; anxiety, stress, overwhelm, depression, low mood, low confidence, sleep problems, chronic pain, OCD, phobias, plus many more! If you are ready to make changes and get the real you back again then please don’t hesitate to get in touch to book your initial consultation and start your journey. I look forward to hearing from you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained with CPHT (Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy Training) and hold a Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH) and Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma(HPD). I won the 2020/2021, 2022 2023/2024 and 2024/25 Prestige Award for London and South East England 'Hypnotherapist of the Year'.  I am a clinical supervisor for other hypnotherapists and a senior lecturer for CPHT.

I am registered with the AfSFH and NCH. I am fully insured and hold an enhanced DBS.

I originally trained as a teacher and taught in schools for a number of years. I was led to Solution Focused Hypnotherapy myself when I went through a low time in my life. I felt alone and confused, lacked confidence and had a very negative mindset. Over the years I had tried a few different therapies, all of which had involved discussing the past, something I hadn’t found beneficial in any way. I knew I wanted to move forward, not to dwell on the past. I stumbled across a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist in my local community, purely by coincidence. After only 6 sessions with her, my mindset had completely changed, I was able to make confident decisions and I found a new found sense of self worth in myself. I will forever be grateful to the therapist mentioned for helping me to change my life around, something I aspire to do with my clients. I soon realised that it was time for me to move on from teaching, and what better way to do so than to start my Solution Focused Hypnotherapy training with CPHT, a decision that absolutely changed my life.

I am a firm believer that we have little power of what has happened in the past or will happen in the future but we have complete power over how we respond. Once we come to realise this and change the way we look at things, the things we look at also seem to change. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy enabled me to do this and it will for you too.

FAQ's

1. What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a modern and up to date approach. A highly effective and safe form of talking psychotherapy (taking elements of SFBT, CBT and NLP) combined with relaxation techniques known as hypnosis. It is based entirely on neuroscience. We work on moving forward and becoming the best version of yourself, without the need to revisit the past. It combines both conscious and sub-conscious change.

2. Who will benefit?

Almost anyone! We see people from many walks of life who are struggling with a range of symptoms such as anxiety, depression, OCD, IBS, panic attacks, low confidence and insomnia to name but a few. To see a wider list please visit the Treatments section of the website. The more committed and willing you are to engage in the therapy process, the more you will benefit.

3. What is hypnosis? Will I be put to sleep?!

No! Hypnotherapy couldn’t be any further away from the clock swinging images you may have in your mind! Hypnosis (commonly referred to as trance) is ordinary in many ways, we go into it many times a day, when we are driving, out walking, watching television etc. We do it all the time. It is a perfectly natural state in which you have full control at all times. Hypnosis or trance is a special focusing of the consciousness which is brought about through relaxation, when we are in this state we have access to the subconscious mind, enabling us to make positive decisions and move forward in life. You won’t have to speak or do anything at all, other than sit back and listen to the sound of my voice with some relaxing music playing in the background. You might find that you’re focused on what I’m saying or you might find that you’re thinking about what you’re going to have for dinner! Either is absolutely fine and you will still be taking everything in and allowing your brain to process what we discuss in the session.

Many people believe that hypnotherapy is something that is ‘done’ to them, that they explain their issue to the therapist who then simply hypnotises their problem away, as if by magic. But Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a much more collaborative process and it’s important to understand that change happens because you want it to and because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen.

4. Will I have to talk about my past?

Not at all. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy does not address the past in any way. We focus on the present and helping you to move forward in life.

5. What can I expect from a session?

The session is made up of two parts. During the first part of the session we use forward thinking positive talking therapy to support you to move forward, not go over the past. We celebrate what’s been good for you and your successes. We guide you to find your own solutions to your problems. The second part of the session is hypnosis. The special focusing of your subconscious enables you to consolidate what we’ve discussed in the session and to find solutions to your problems. Just lie back, get comfy, relax and listen! Expect a collaborative process where we work together, lots of science and understanding of how your brain works and most importantly, fun! It is rare that my clients and I don’t laugh during a session. If you are looking to spend a lot of time bringing up your past then this is not the right therapy for you. It is positive and forward thinking and we make steps towards your preferred future without having to address the past.

6. How many sessions will I need?

Usually between 6-12 sessions is all that is needed. However, this is entirely dependant on the individual and other varying factors. This will be discussed with you further at the initial consultation. Most clients then tend to reduce their sessions to fortnightly and so on once they start to feel much better in themselves.

7. Can you work with children?

Yes. The therapy is perfectly safe and enjoyable for children! Katie holds an enhanced DBS certificate and has many years experience of working with children. She works with children from aged 8 upwards.

8. Does it work online?

Absolutely!  Sessions are exactly the same and just as effective. Many clients have completed their whole therapy journey online from start to finish. You get to be comfy at home in your pyjamas and cut out unnecessary travel time!

9. Where do I start?!

The best and first place to start is with an initial consultation. This is a great opportunity for you to find out more about the therapy and meet Katie. In the consultation Katie will ask you some basic questions and find out more about how she can help and what you’d like to achieve. She will then explain, in detail, how the process works and the science behind it. Feel free to bring with you any questions that you may want answering.
