About me

Oliver Hollis MSc, BSc, BA, Dip Hyp.
NCH Registered Hypnotherapist
HCPC Registered Physiotherapist

Dear reader, I am a physio who originally sought hypnotherapy for my own issues.  Hypnotherapy helped me get unstuck where traditional methods hadn’t helped. I went on to learn and study hypnotherapy, in the clinic and in the research lab, and have had a clinical practice ever since.

For you, the benefit will be working with someone who changed lifestyle through hypnotherapy; shaking off some really unhealthy habits and gently gaining useful ones; making them deep and natural. I've got years of knowledge and training, and the clinical experience to make it work for you. Every session will have a focus which I ensure is highly relevant to you. I measure all the work because I want to know our sessions are effective, and for you it should feel like money well-spent

I'm fully comfortable with hypnosis (just as well really!) but you might have some concerns so I offer the reassurance that I am a State registered and qualified healthcare professional and you can trust that I work to the highest ethical and professional standards: I only work within my scope, (fairly wide though that is —especially from working in the NHS where patients can present with many issues), and I will not try to “fix” things you don’t want fixing.

If you’re considering whether hypnotherapy might help, send me an email. I sometimes worry in these profile things that I'm coming across too strident -- in real life I'm easy-going, quietly professional, empathetic and non-judgemental.  I’ll reply within 24 hours. (Remember to check your SPAM folder.) Typically, we arrange a discovery call first. It’s free and there is no obligation to work with me. You can decide if I am the kind of therapist you’re seeking. I want to help you feel in more control, with more understanding of who you are.

Training, qualifications & experience

Private clients often want help with anxiety, weight issues, diabetes control, phobias, and compulsive/ addictive issues such as smoking, sugar, alcohol. In the NHS I specialise in the management of difficult, persisting pain conditions like fibromyalgia, and Long Covid, and use hypnosis alongside traditional pain management.

I have an MSc in Hypnosis in Research, Medicine, & Clinical Practice from Bournemouth University.

I hold the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD) which is the gold standard hypnotherapy qualification. I trained at the internationally renowned Anglo European School of Therapeutic Hypnosis. I have ongoing clinical supervision through this college.

I am an active member of the British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis (BSCAH). BSCAH membership is exclusively limited to medical doctors, qualified healthcare professionals, and academic hypnosis researchers. I have presented at BSCAH webinars as well as teaching emergency medicine doctors how to use fast, hypnotic techniques for pain relief, panic attack management, and patient sedation without anaesthesia in the ED (A&E).

I am registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) and abide by their strict code of ethics for hypnotherapists. I have a wealth of experience treating NHS patients with long-term conditions and the issues I describe here, and I adhere to the professional code of ethics required for my ongoing State registration as a physiotherapist (Health & Care Professions Council, HCPC).

The main branch of the “psychological tree” I’ve trained in has the behavioural approaches of ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy) and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) — which I often use in conjunction with hypnosis. I qualified in CBT for pain at master’s level at the University of Hertfordshire. I also use REBT (Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy) which has distinctive features useful for overcoming obstacles to change.
