Sometimes we all struggle with a lack of confidence which makes us feel that we can't succeed at what is important to us. This could be at work with a specific project or presentation coming up. Or it could be with a personal challenge that we have set ourselves - a 10K race for example, that requires training and motivation.

To feel confident we need to be in the right frame of mind so that we can focus on our goals and think logically and rationally about how we can achieve them. This is very difficult if we are stressed, anxious or unhappy and any feelings of confidence will be pushed aside by that negative voice in our heads!

Negative self-talk such as "I am useless" and "I'm never going to be able to do this run/presentation/meeting without looking stupid" is extremely unhelpful and untrue!

What we tell ourselves in our head directly affects how we feel and behave. If we tell ourselves that we aren't going to succeed then what hope do we have of finding the focus to give it our all? These negative messages form a neural pathway in the brain which, through repetition, becomes hard wired. Once hard wired it is very difficult to change because it becomes your default setting. Friends, family and colleagues may tell us what we need to hear ('of course you can do it! You are brilliant! You are smart!') but that hard-wired message is persistent and resilient. The more you speak to yourself negatively, the more it becomes part of your personality. Your brain also doesn't know the difference between what is real and what is imagined, so you tell yourself you're rubbish/stupud/useless/unsuccessful then your brain will accept it as a truth and look for ways to reinforce it.

But there is good news because advances in neuroscience have shown us that the brain is plastic and it is able to change. And this is where hypnotherapy comes in. Not only does it calm and relax the mind, helping you to become happier and more positive, but it also helps you access your own inner strengths and resources so that you find the motivation, determination and confidence to do whatever you want to do.

When in a trance state, your mind becomes solution-focused; it discovers new ways of doing things and is able to recognise and accept its own potential for success. When relaxed, the negative voice in your head that normally tells you how rubbish you are is quietened and positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist are accepted and acted upon by the subconscious mind. And, as mentioned above, the brain doesn't know the difference between real and imagined and so by repeatedly thinking positively, your brain will believe every positive thing you tell yourself! These positive thoughts will create new neural pathways which will become stronger and stronger and become part of your personality. Feeling confident in your own abilities will become automatic. And as for those old negaitive thought patterns? They will become weaker and weaker until they become redundant.

Hypnotherapy can help you complete that 10K race. It can help you nail that presentation. It can even help you work towards proving you are worthy of that promotion! You can become the self-assured, confident and competent person you have always wanted to be.
