Are you trying to heal yourself from your binge eating issues? You may have heard of hypnotherapy and wondered if and how it can help.

Binge eating disorder (BED), also known as compulsive eating disorder, is characterised as eating large amounts of food in a period of time. There often comes with it a feeling of hopelessness, loss of control and anxiety. It can also take over your life with all your energy and focus going into trying to stop your binge eating and then trying to diet or lose weight in between episodes, at the same time as managing your feelings when you do have a binge. Phew, that is tiring.

How can hypnotherapy help?

During a session, you are put into a very relaxed state. In this state, you are more open to suggestion and more open to trying new behaviours.

Let's explore what the therapist will discuss with you, and some questions they may ask.

What is your eating situation?

The therapist will discuss with you your eating patterns. This will include how often you binge, if you restrict your eating when you are not binging, and your feelings around your relationship with food. This will be a big part of the therapy as it brings about awareness of your eating patterns and you start to unravel the cause of your eating.

What would you like your relationship with food to be?

This is helping you to see a life beyond your eating issues. Helping you see the positive and helping you move into a future that you want.

What other issues are associated with your eating?

Many people with binge eating, also have tendencies towards anxiety and or depression. Hypnotherapy can help you to relax this part of your brain that is tense and anxious. By helping your anxiety or other emotions, it can help you to manage your eating much better.

Of course, this takes time to move and change and this is where hypnotherapy can be a great help.

The more you learn to relax, the more you become in tune with your body and your thoughts, and you become more in control of your eating patterns.

Hypnotherapy helps you to:

  • Turn negative thoughts into positive ones.
  • Become aware of the thought patterns that lead you to binge, so you can change them.
  • Learn to feel better about yourself, so you naturally start eating healthier food.
  • Become more relaxed within yourself, so you start living the life that you want.
  • Adopt new eating habits, so your eating is balanced and intuitive.
  • Feel more confident and happier within yourself. When you feel this way, it gets easier to make changes to your eating habits.

What other support is available?

I have talked about hypnotherapy for binge eating disorder. I think it would be beneficial to also get dietary help from a dietitian. After years of poor eating habits and having learnt poor eating habits, a nutrition professional can give you guidelines and recommend certain foods based on your needs.

Your doctor can also refer you to other health professionals and be a good start to get the help you need. Any support you have will be worthwhile.
