About me

Not all hypnotherapy is the same. I practise Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, which uses evidence-based techniques supported by scientific research. We examine which of your thoughts, behaviours and beliefs might be holding you back, and look to see how we can replace them with more helpful, positive ways of being.

Hypnosis underpins all my work, but I also utilise techniques from CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) to arm you with strategies to help you face any challenges outside the therapy room. Research shows that pairing cognitive behavioural therapy with hypnosis has more positive outcomes than using either in isolation.

I offer a welcoming, warm and completely confidential environment for all my clients, and understand that every person is an individual with their own needs, tailoring my services accordingly. It's a great privilege to have people come to me and open their hearts, and nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing a client surprise themselves with the changes they can make in their life.

How the process works:

To begin with, I offer a free 20-30 minute consultation either in person or over the phone to establish whether we would like to work together. This is an opportunity for you to ask any questions you have about the process before deciding that you'd like to go ahead.

After that, the first session is usually a proper assessment, where we take the time to really understand your problems and how we can work together to help you. Many people want to leap straight into hypnosis, which can be helpful. However, most people find that really taking the time to discuss their specific problem in depth helps them gain a much deeper understanding of the issue, and helps put them in a stronger position to make real change from now on.

Some issues are best addressed in a one-off two-hour sessions which incorporate the assessment with the treatment - these include smoking and habit reversal (nail-biting, hair-pulling etc.). For other issues, although people notice a real difference after a single session, generally between three and six sessions (including the assessment) are required to make meaningful, lasting change.

Mine is a learning-based approach. I want you to leave our sessions with a better understanding of what's going on physically and mentally when you're doing undesirable behaviours, and I want to equip you with the skills you need to thrive in any situation. What you learn is highly transferrable, and making a change in one area can lead to a cascade of positive changes in other parts of your life.

What I specialise in:

Although I am happy to discuss any issue that could be addressed using hypnotherapy, areas I have had particular training and success in treating include:

Smoking Cessation
Bad Habits
Stress & Anxiety
Sports Performance
Confidence & Motivation
Fears & Phobias
Relaxation Training
Creativity Problems

Training, qualifications & experience

My diploma in Evidence-based Hypnotherapy comes from the UKCHH (UK College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy), the only training course whose certificate is approved by the British Psychological Society.

I also have a Diploma in Stress-Management and Resilience-Building from the UKCHH, which is accredited by ISMA, the International Stress-Management Association.

Further, I have attended specialised training workshops for Smoking Cessation and Enhancing Neuroplasticity, which is the study of how we can change our brains for the better.

From time to time I work as a teaching assistant on the UKCHH, and enjoy sharing my skills with students.

I am a registered member of the GHR (General Hypnotherapy Register) and the CNHC (Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council)

I also hold a BSc (hons) in Management and an MA in Creative Writing, both of which come in handy for aspects of my hypnotherapy work.

Member organisations

GHR
The General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR)

Hypnotherapists may become members of the General Hypnotherapy Register if they satisfy certain criteria with regard to both training and ongoing requirements as determined from time to time by the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC).

Members are either registered at Practitioner status (which confirms that the GHR acknowledges their qualification to practice), or Affiliate status. Although Affiliate level registrants will have completed a sufficient number of training hours to equip them to commence seeing clients on a limited basis, the GHR does not acknowledge them to have yet been trained to full practitioner level.

All GHR Registered Practitioners are required to accept the published Code of Ethics and Complaints & Disciplinary Procedure.

CNHC
Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC)

The CNHC encompasses many types of alternative therapy, including hypnotherapy.

In order to be admitted to the register a practitioner must have studied to the National Occupational Standards for that profession/discipline, or have reached the equivalent of the National Occupational Standards through other relevant training or at least three years of experience and been assessed by their peers.

A practitioner must also have professional insurance and agree to abide by the CNHC Code of Conduct, Performance and Ethics.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Hypnotherapy can enhance the well-being of individuals diagnosed with serious medical conditions, but should not take the place of medical treatment and advice. Further information

There are more testimonials on my website, but here are a couple of examples of things people have had to say about working with me:

'I came to Philip to help improve my focus and motivation. As something of a sceptic, I approached these sessions with limited expectations, but I needed something to change. I found Philip to be very percipient in matters of human behaviour, and he really put me at ease. The results were immediate and far-reaching, and have greatly impacted on my health and motivation.'

Alex M, Musician

I came to Philip with an ingrained habit I wanted to break - I found him totally in control of the process and I felt at ease throughout. His method is based firmly in neuroscience and it works. I'm now much more aware of what I'm doing and in control of my actions and I've seen huge improvements after only couple of weeks. He gave me strategies for long term sustainable changes and the confidence to put them in place. Highly recommended.

Martha C, Drama Teacher

I admitted to myself I liked a tipple in the evening a bit too much, so I decided to get help. After 2 sessions I did not need to reach for the sherry bottle every evening. I told myself I did not want to drink every evening and I didn't. I was amazed how easy it was. Thank you, Philip!
