Katie Bagnall-Songbird Hypnotherapy DSFH, HPD, AfSFH, NCH, CNHC
Hello, I'm Katie, a Clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist.
I run Songbird Hypnotherapy, which is a Clinical Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy practice based in Bedfordshire, supporting people with their mental health. I am also able to work with you online via Zoom if you would prefer or are not in travelling distance of the practice.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is an up to date and modern approach. A forward thinking and positive form of talking therapy, combined with hypnosis, without the need to dwell on the past. The therapy is entirely neuroscience based and will get you feeling the best version of yourself again!
I specialise in supporting people suffering from a range of symptoms and helping them to get their lives back on track.
Imagine feeling confident and in control every day. What difference would that make to your life? What would you be able to achieve?
I work with people suffering from; anxiety, depression, low mood, insomnia, chronic pain, OCD, phobias, PTSD, grief and weight management plus many more! If you want to eliminate any of these symptoms from your life and get the real you back again then please don’t hesitate to get in touch to book your FREE initial consultation and start your journey. I look forward to hearing from you.
Training, qualifications & experience
I trained with CPHT (Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy Training) and hold a Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH) and Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma(HPD).
I am registered with the AfSFH, NCH and CNHC. I am fully insured and hold an enhanced DBS.
I am currently completing my training as a Senior Lecturer for CPHT.
I originally trained as a teacher and taught in schools for a number of years. I was led to Solution Focused Hypnotherapy myself when I went through a low time in my life. I felt alone and confused, lacked confidence and had a very negative mindset. Over the years I had tried a few different therapies, all of which had involved discussing the past, something I hadn’t found beneficial in any way. I knew I wanted to move forward, not to dwell on the past. I stumbled across a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist in my local community, purely by coincidence. After only 6 sessions with her, my mindset had completely changed, I was able to make confident decisions and I found a new found sense of self worth in myself. The lady mentioned became a good friend of mine, and I will forever be grateful to her for helping me to change my life around, something I aspire to do with my clients. I soon realised that it was time for me to move on from teaching, and what better way to do so than to start my Solution Focused Hypnotherapy training with CPHT, a decision that absolutely changed my life.
I am a firm believer that we have little power of what has happened in the past or will happen in the future but we have complete power over how we respond. Once we come to realise this and change the way we look at things, the things we look at also seem to change. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy enabled me to do this and it will for you too.
Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy
The Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH) was set up to provide information about a modern form of Hypnotherapy and its associated benefits to members of the public. The main aim of the AfSFH is to spread awareness of the benefits of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. Its secondary aim is to support Hypnotherapists in their businesses by encouraging good practice and self-care.

1. What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is unique and highly innovative. A modern and up to date approach. It is a highly effective and safe form of talking psychotherapy combined with relaxation techniques known as hypnosis. It is based entirely on neuroscience. We work on moving forward and becoming the best version of yourself, without the need to revisit the past.
2. Who will benefit?
Almost anyone! We see people from many walks of life who are struggling with a range of symptoms such as anxiety, depression, OCD, IBS, panic attacks, low confidence and insomnia to name but a few. To see a wider list please visit the Treatments section of the website. The more committed and willing you are to engage in the therapy process, the more you will benefit.
3. What is hypnosis? Will I be put to sleep?!
No! Hypnotherapy couldn’t be any further away from the clock swinging images you may have in your mind! Hypnosis (commonly referred to as trance) is ordinary in many ways, we go into it many times a day, when we are driving, out walking, watching television etc. We do it all the time. It is a perfectly natural state in which you have full control at all times. Hypnosis or trance is a special focusing of the consciousness which is brought about through relaxation, when we are in this state we have access to the subconscious mind, enabling us to make positive decisions and move forward in life. You won’t have to speak or do anything at all, other than sit back and listen to the sound of my voice with some relaxing music playing in the background.
Many people believe that hypnotherapy is something that is ‘done’ to them, that they explain their issue to the therapist who then simply hypnotises their problem away, as if by magic. But Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a much more collaborative process and it’s important to understand that change happens because you want it to and because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen.
4. Will I have to talk about my past?
Not at all. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy does not address the past in any way. We focus on the present and helping you to move forward in life.
5. What can I expect from a session?
The session is made up of two parts. During the first part of the session we use forward thinking positive talking therapy to support you to move forward, not go over the past. We celebrate what’s been good for you and your successes. We guide you to find your own solutions to your problems. The second part of the session is hypnosis. The special focusing of your subconscious enables you to consolidate what we’ve discussed in the session and to find solutions to your problems. Just lie back, get comfy, relax and listen! Expect a collaborative process where we work together, lots of science and understanding of how your brain works and most importantly, fun! It is rare that my clients and I don’t laugh during a session. If you are looking to spend a lot of time bringing up your past then this is not the right therapy for you. It is positive and forward thinking and we make steps towards your preferred future without having to address the past.
6. How many sessions will I need?
Usually up to 12 sessions is all that is needed. However, this is entirely dependant on the individual and other varying factors.
7. Can you work with children?
Yes. The therapy is perfectly safe and enjoyable for children! Katie holds an enhanced DBS certificate and has many years experience of working with children.
8. Does it work online?
Absolutely! We have been very fortunate over the past year to have been able to work online. Sessions are exactly the same and just as effective. Many clients have completed their whole therapy journey online from start to finish. You get to be comfy at home in your pyjamas and cut out unnecessary travel time!
‘Helped me through the most traumatic time in my life’
Before I began seeing Katie my life was in turmoil, having being diagnosed with cancer I was finding it virtually impossible to stay calm and stop my mind working over time. I began meeting Katie weekly for hypnosis, in a calm and relaxing environment. Katie is understanding and friendly, making me feel able to open up and share my thoughts and feelings. Since I began regular hypnotherapy sessions I have been able to use the techniques to stay calm. If life becomes overwhelming I can refer back to the hypnosis audio to relax me and put my mind back in order. It has made a huge difference to my life. Before I began hypnotherapy, I must admit I was sceptical, but at such a low point in my life I was open and willing to try something different, and I am so glad I did. If you need calm in your life or help with anxiety, low mood, depression, open your mind to hypnotherapy it has helped me through the most traumatic time of my life. Thank you Katie.

‘Changed my thought process’
I was introduced to Katie when I was feeling a bit disillusioned with life and quite negative. She made me feel immediately comfortable and relaxed. After a few sessions I started to feel a lot more positive about things and found it easier to deal with everyday worries and anxieties. I would definitely recommend hypnotherapy to everyone as it has certainly changed my thought processes and made me a happier and more positive person!

‘I can tackle any new obstacles’
I went to Katie as I was struggling with anxiety so a friend suggested that I should try hypnotherapy to see if that could help. I had no previous experience of hypnotherapy or counselling and was very curious about it all. Straight away Katie made me feel comfortable and relaxed and able to express myself and my feelings. At first Katie did a consultation session which she explains in detail how different parts of the brain work which gave me a deeper understanding of the hypnotherapy process. After 4 sessions I already noticed some results as I felt calmer happier and in general a lot less anxious. We discussed strategies to cope with the anxiety and she explained in depth how to empty my ‘stress bucket’ by thinking positively. Katie recognised that the main anxieties were coming from public speaking so she decided a different strategy with me which focused on this, which helped me complete a presentation at work. During this presentation it was the most confident I had ever spoken and felt. I am thoroughly pleased I went to see Katie and although I only had a few sessions she has made me feel like I can tackle any new obstacles in life. If anyone is thinking about having hypnotherapy with Katie I would definitely recommend her sessions as she is fantastic at what she does!
‘Beginning to smile again’
The Autumn of 2018 turned my life upside down, my 3rd grandson was born prematurely and was critically ill and during the same weekend my beloved partner passed away. This was followed by my son being the victim of an unprovoked attack and sustaining severe brain trauma and the passing of my grandmother, all within six months of each other. This amount of trauma had such an enormous effect on me: I felt lost; and out of control; I couldn’t sleep; although when I did I had the most horrific dreams. I had met Katie through work and when I knew she was looking for people to work with I felt I had nothing to lose, I needed help and although medication from my doctor had helped a little bit, the feeling of panic and loss were overwhelming. Katie is very friendly and welcoming and working with her has been amazing. During my first session she explained about how your brain deals with trauma by using responses to previous trauma and this made so much sense. At first I found it difficult to list anything positive that had happened but as the weeks went by I began to really appreciate all the positive things I have in my life. Katie was always calm and encouraging and her therapy room is very comfortable and relaxing, and her snugly blankets offer just the right amount of comfort! I think it took about 9 weeks for me to start to feel more like myself, I began to sleep soundly through the night and remain calm and unanxious. I would recommend hypnotherapy to anyone considering it. It has been amazing I feel so much lighter and brighter and am beginning to smile again.

I had recently finished working at my job due to stress and was struggling with depression and anxiety. Going to Katie I was able to talk in a safe and comfortable environment about my issues and going through steps to feel better. I felt each session I had a more positive outlook than negative. I highly recommend going to hypnotherapy with Katie, she listens to your needs and has a calming positive effect. Each day I feel much more positive and happier fulfilling my goals and outlook.
Jemma G, Shortstown, Beds
I have suffered from anxiety and low confidence for a number of years. This in turn affects my sleep, so I decided to seek help from Katie. Through Katie's support I am setting myself achievable targets and giving myself nurture time when I feel tired or anxious. I am learning some relaxation techniques through talking meditation, which is improving my sleep. As a man, we often find it harder to talk about our emotions and insecurities, Katie has helped to break down this stigma and I am so glad I have accessed her support. I would highly recommend her.
Gary E, Biggleswade, Beds
I am someone who is anxious, worrier, an over thinker, very irrational with my thoughts and sees the negative in pretty much everything. One of my concerns was my lack of sleep. I used to wake up at night and not be able to go back to sleep. I can honestly say I noticed a big improvement after the 1st time I listened to the mp3 which Katie had given me. I listen to the recording most nights and now hardly wake at all! With Katie's help, I now feel I am able to cope with situations when they arrive easier than before and remain calmer. I’m also starting to think in a more positive way rather than negative.

‘More confidence in myself’
Being someone who is very anxious, worries about everything and struggles with a lot of issues, hypnosis with Katie has definitely changed things around. I'm seeing things brightly now and have more confidence in myself. Katie is a very friendly person who will listen and who I feel very comfortable with.

‘Things are finally going smoothly’
I have suffered with depression and anxiety all my life and the last few years I have been diagnosed with emotional personality disorder along with PTSD from my ex partner. Life hasn't been easy for me at all. I heard about Katie through my Mum so I thought I would give it a go! From the first moment I met Katie I was overwhelmed with how welcoming and lovely she is. My sessions went really well and I have made some big decisions in my life that I was too scared to do before hypnotherapy. Things are finally going smoothly. I have also quit smoking completely! This is all down to Katie, so thank you very much I'm over the moon with how it's gone!

‘More positive than I can remember’
I have suffered on and off for years with depression and anxiety. I have tried counselling before but nothing has really helped. I was unsure about hypnotherapy at first but I thought there was no harm in giving it a try. I’m so glad I did. After seeing Katie for a few weeks I am feeling so much better and more positive than I can remember.
Katie is really friendly and welcoming, She put me at ease straight away and I always leave feeling calm and relaxed.

‘I found myself’
Katie was recommended to me by a friend who had attended her sessions. I wasn’t really sure what to expect having never spoken to anyone, apart from a couple of friends, about my lack of love for myself. I attended four sessions during lockdown via zoom which I found very relaxing. I found Katie very calm, soothing, non judgemental and easy to talk to. She helped me concentrate on the positives and she asked questions that made me question why I was acting in certain ways and who I was doing it for. Katie lead me to question what made me happy and feel good about myself. I stopped comparing myself to other people, stopped judging other people and concentrated on the positives. One of the things Katie asked me to do was write a list of the things that made me happy/smile. These could be anything from hearing the birds sing to laughing at something I heard/read. This is something I will continue to do. Another thing I will continue to do is listen to the tapes that Katie sent me. I may even get to the end of one without falling asleep! When asked what I did in lockdown I can say I found myself. If you need help or guidance give Katie a try, what do you have to lose?
I wasn't even sure what I was looking for when I found Katie. I certainly never thought I would be someone who had hypnotherapy. But hey, turns out I am and it's awesome. I would massively recommend Katie to anyone. If you are struggling with anything at all it's likely she can help you.
‘Hypnotherapy has absolutely worked for me’
I have known Katie for a few years so I felt comfortable to approach her when I needed some support as I was suffering with anxiety and bad sleeping habits. Katie has given me tools to improve my sleeping pattern which has made a huge difference to my mindset and how I approach lots of different areas in my life. Hypnotherapy has absolutely worked for me and I would recommend Katie to anyone who feels they need some form of help/support. Katie is so warm and friendly that it makes her sessions very comfortable and relaxed.
‘I am no longer scared of spiders!’
Due to lockdown, my sessions with Katie were conducted via Zoom. She has such a warm and professional manner, I felt instantly at ease. I have had a phobia of spiders for many years and after just 4 sessions, I already feel indifferent towards them. I might not ever love them.. but I am no longer scared of them!
Thank you Katie, you’re brilliant!
Lindsay E, Biggleswade
‘Even if you don’t really know what the problem is, I would highly recommend.’
I made my decision to slow down after a few sessions with Songbird Hypnotherapy. I didn't think I needed or wanted hypnotherapy but one day I messaged her to see if she could help me, and then she did. Anyone who needs help, even if you don't really know what the problem is, I would highly recommend.
‘Helped myself and my family through the worst time of our lives.’
Due to 2020, having covid myself, the loss of my Grandad and Uncle and dealing with being a single Mum to two crazy boys I decided it was time I needed a few sessions with the amazingly talented Songbird Hypnotherapy. She has helped myself and my family through the worst time of our lives so far and for that I will be forever grateful.
‘I would not hesitate in recommending both Katie and hypnotherapy to a friend.’
I decided to try hypnotherapy with Katie as I have always struggled with insomnia and anxiety. In my initial consultation Katie explained how our brains work, why we feel stress and anxiety and how future sessions were going to work. Even after this first session I began to understand how and why I felt the way I did and this was such a relief. Katie has helped me to understand my feelings and thought processes and this in turn has helped me to make progress in addressing my sleep and anxiety problems. Katie is calm and reassuring, you can tell she genuinely loves what she does and in turn this makes you feel at ease from the beginning. I would not hesitate in recommending both Katie and hypnotherapy to a friend.
Katie has been fantastic at helping me over the last 3 months. Highly Recommend.
‘I’m undertaking things that I never thought possible!’
Katie helped to bring the real me back, in fact I'm 'better' now than I have been in ten years- truly the best version of myself. I am fearless, I have coping mechanisms when thoughts may occasionally start to spiral, and I'm undertaking things that I never thought possible. I can't thank her enough! She works clinically, and I love that- my graph of progress that we review each week went from 2/10 'unhappy' to 10/10 better than I've been in years in a few short enjoyable sessions. What was great for me was that the sessions are positive and instantly helpful- not about focusing on the past! I couldn't recommend her more highly!
‘Biggest spider I’ve ever dealt with by far!’
I had worse than a fear of spiders to be honest. I had full blown arachnophobia. I had nightmares about them most nights, had invasive thoughts during the day, couldn’t use our bath (would only shower instead so I could get out quick if one appeared) and had a breakdown last year where I nearly left home because I genuinely believed we had an infestation (we didn’t)! Exposure therapy didn’t work and citalopram took the edge off but it wasn’t until Katie helped me that I have finally got to the point of dealing with them! When I went to get on a zoom call earlier there was a whopper of a spider on the wall. I caught it with my new spider catcher and it sat next to me throughout the meeting until I then released it outside. Biggest spider I’ve ever dealt with by far. If it’d been 6 months ago I would have had to conduct the zoom call elsewhere, would have felt physically sick and become really teary. Thank you Katie!
I used Katie during a relationship breakdown, I went to her every week for around 3 months. And I honestly don’t think I would’ve got through that time so calmly or level headed without her. She’s amazing at her job, I’ve recommended her to so many people.
‘I’ve managed to empty my stress bucket.’
In all honesty I was sceptical about hypnotherapy initially, as my way of thinking was so negative for such a long time that I thought it was normal. But Katie is super friendly and non judgemental and made me feel at ease from the off. I've managed to empty my stress bucket, build up my self confidence and therefore my way of thinking and everyday happiness. I'd recommend doing the free initial consultation, if you're even considering it as it will make your mind up for you!
‘I am now feeling a great deal happier.’
I sought Katie’s help after taking on a promotion at work which, combined with the impacts of COVID on the demands of this role, led to me feeling under a lot of work-related stress. With Katie’s help I was able to achieve my goal of keeping work and home separate and was able to enjoy my time out of work with friends and family once again. I found myself able to be more ‘present’ and live in the moment outside of work and keep mental boundaries between these two elements of my life. Katie's sessions over a couple of months or so enabled me to gain a greater understanding of the mechanics of what was happening in my brain and why, and learnt to change my response and recognise the positive impact of even the most simple interactions and activities. I’m therefore optimistic that, whilst I am now feeling a great deal happier, I am also equipped with the tools to help me react in the right way if I feel myself starting to suffer the same negative emotions again.

‘I’m so much happier’
It's amazing how much better I feel after 10 sessions with Katie. My mindset has changed completely, I'm so much happier. I can't thank her enough.
I originally turned to Katie because of my IBS but it turned out to be so much more than that. She helped me stay focused and positive through the struggles of a life-changing move to a new country. I started feeling less overwhelmed and less stressed after a few sessions already, and lo and behold, my stomach issues decreased as well, despite everything going on in my life. I would suggest anyone who needs even the slightest bit of help to get in touch with Katie, she really works wonders and I looked forward to our meetings every week.
Lara W, Switzerland/Biggleswade
‘Will stay with me for life!’
I started seeing Katie because I didn't feel I was coping with my emotions during challenging times with my little one. Sessions with Katie were so helpful. I didn't necessarily realise session by session but after a period of time I realised how far my mindset had shifted to a more positive mindset. She has given me the tools to cope even after finishing sessions with her. I will always think back to what she has taught me and this will stay with me for life. Thank you Katie for your help and support!
‘Far less anxious’
My 12 year old son struggled with anxiety which accelerated with the return to school after being away for 5 months and then with the many covid restrictions. The weekly sessions he has been attending have made him become far less anxious and thanks to Katie's techniques he suffers from anxiety less frequently now and when he does have any, he recognises it and works on trying to control the situation. Hypnotherapy is a great technique for adults and children and I myself have benefited from the Songbird Hypnotherapy mp3 recordings.
‘The best thing I have ever done’
I first went to Katie to try and sort out my eating habits, thinking Katie would just hypnotise me and I would be able to diet better and be slim. Well, the first session I was thinking, what is this going to do? The second session I'm thinking, well it is making me think about what I'm doing with my day. The third session everything just clicked. It's not about what I'm putting in my mouth, it's about what I'm putting in my own head. I had 6 sessions with Katie and I can honestly say it's the best thing I have ever done. I still have Katie in my head when I'm about to make a dodgy decision, or I'm sitting on my bottom doing nothing and thinking too much. I go back to my sessions with Katie and I get up and do something more productive.

‘Without doubt the best decision we’ve made!’
My daughter came to see Katie after an incident caused her to have anxiety around school and certain situations. She instantly felt comfortable and open around Katie and the sessions were a success! Evie now understands the way her mind works around anxiety and her confidence has grown and no longer feels held back by feelings that would’ve controlled her day to day life. I can’t thank Katie enough for helping Evie, opting for hypnotherapy is without doubt the best decision we’ve made and Katie is amazing at what she does.. even having to switch to online sessions with audio still have helped massively and we’ve seen a complete shift in her way of thinking, We're so thankful for Katie’s help and we now have a care free confident child.
Lucy N, Biggleswade
‘I am now a much calmer person'
I was very lucky to of had the chance to see Katie, this was due to having a very kind and caring family member who recommended and funded the sessions. Following the death of my beautiful 19 year old daughter this September, the said family member wanted to offer something he felt would be beneficial in processing the death and other parts of my life. I was a fairly highly strung individual and the little things in life, silly arguments, road rage, and the things people say used to always bother me to the point I would rant and rage and toss and turn through the night to try and process what happened, this in the past has gone on for months, playing like a movie on repeat. Since seeing Katie and listening to her recording I am now a much calmer person, I now process the things that used to bother me more quickly which enables me to move on from it at a quicker rate...i no longer dwell on the 'little things', I now plan and do more things to make me feel better and also what makes me happy and I also look ahead at what I can do next. This has freed up a part of my brain that I needed in order to process the loss of my daughter, it has allowed me to approach things and see things in a different way...although it is still very painful, Katie has really helped me to refocus and look at the good things in my life. Hayley H, Tempsford
‘I feel so much better now!’
It’s like magic! If you asked me 4 months ago what I believed hypnotherapy was I would have said it’s where you are put in a trance with a stop watch and unconsciously perform stupid acts!!! However that’s way off the mark and totally misconceived. Katie used her high level of skill to help me empty my bucket of anxiety and stress which was overflowing to a point where I was in the darkest hole with no idea of how to get out of it. She helped me train my brain to find positives on a daily basis which was very hard at the start of the process but has now become so easy I don’t seem to have to put that much effort in. The meditation recordings which I listen to every night enabled me to have quality sleep. I feel so much better now and highly recommend Katie to everyone.

‘I can now cope with all of the challenges life throws at me’
I'd like to say that Katie at Songbird Hypnotherapy really has helped me to gain back control of my life. Mentally I can now cope with all of the challenges life throws at me. When Katie takes you under her wing and listens and understands your problems she will help you to retrain your mentality to help you cope, deal and give you the understanding of how to solve your issues. I can't say enough how grateful I am to her and would highly recommend to anyone.
I can highly recommend this. During the first lockdown I found, like many, that I was indulging a little bit too much on the alcohol front - it’s been a lifelong affair for me but with all the warnings about being overweight and of a certain age and the increased risks of getting a terminal dose of C19 I decided to get proper help. Katie has been brilliant. Supportive, constructive and totally non-judgemental. I now understand the triggers and how to avoid them and I also understand that it’s going to be a work in progress. I've come on massively in the last four months and Katie has made a massive difference to me both in my mental health and my general outlook. Do this!
'I am now teetotal.'
I've had a life-long affair with Alcohol - and during the first Lockdown I realised that, like most affairs, it was going to end with someone getting hurt. I was at the stage where one drink was too many and two wasn't enough. I was introduced to Katie in September by a friend. She has been wonderful. She has supported, encouraged and challenged but never judged. It's been a joy and I've conquered an addiction that 6 months ago I thought would probably kill me. I am now teetotal. I am fitter, happier and quite simply richer. Most of all I am Free. I thought I was beyond help. Thankfully Katie didn't.
For me this has been hugely beneficial. I strongly recommend this type of therapy for anyone who is ready to look forward rather than keep dwelling on the past. When we are looking back all the time how can we ever move forward?
