LGBTQIA+ affirming hypnotherapy and solution-focused support
Seeking therapy can be a daunting step. For LGBTQIA+ people - that is, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, non-binary, questioning, or any other identity under the rainbow flag - it can feel daunting and even bigger.
You may have considered reaching out before, but the doubts always come up: Will they really get me? Will I have to explain? What if I feel judged?
I know. I’m a gay man and a therapist, and I also know how important it is to sit with a therapist who actively affirms you. Therapy should never be another place where you feel the need to shrink yourself, and I know how transformative it can feel when it doesn’t.
Affirming therapists get it
If you’ve looked for LGBTQIA+ affirming therapists in the past, you’ll know not all ‘LGBTQIA+ friendly’ equals affirming. Affirming means creating a safe space to be yourself and celebrating that identity.
Affirming therapists:
- Use your correct name and pronouns.
- Respect and affirm gender identity, whether trans, non-binary. genderqueer, or questioning.
- Respect and affirm non-monogamous, polyamorous, or other non-traditional relationship styles, without judgement.
- Recognise that minority stress, such as stigma, rejection or invisibility, can affect well-being, but that these things don’t define a person’s value or identity.
In an affirming session, you don’t need to put on your armour to get support. You can simply be you.
Issues and pressures LGBTQIA+ clients may face
Therapy with an affirming therapist is for LGBTQIA+ people of all genders, sexualities, and life experiences. As with all clients, no two are the same, but there are some common issues and pressures LGBTQIA+ people may face that show up often in therapy:
- Depression, low confidence and self-esteem can be the result of years of sometimes-subtle, sometimes-blunt messages that being ‘different’ is less valid. Solution-focused hypnotherapy (SFH) can help shift focus onto strengths and small positive steps that reinforce self-worth.
- Anxiety around safety and acceptance, such as worries about being misgendered or second-guessing others’ reactions. SFH can provide tools to calm the nervous system and rehearse more grounded, confident responses.
- Transitions, whether in the form of coming out, changes in relationship status, social transitions, and more. SFH supports resilience, helping you imagine the future you want and strengthen your confidence as you move forward.
- Stress around identity, whether around gender expression, sexuality, or relationship styles such as polyamory. SFH won’t ask you to explain your identity again, but instead help reduce the stress and anxiety that can accompany these topics.
- Confidence around intimacy and connection, whether with a partner or within polyamorous or other non-monogamous relationship structures. Hypnosis allows the mind to practise feeling more relaxed and authentic in intimacy with others.
These are not flaws or weaknesses. They are common, human reactions to legitimate pressures. They are things that affirming therapy can help with.
What if therapy could feel different?
Imagine stepping into a therapy room without first having to explain your pronouns, your sexuality, your relationship style, or your identity. Imagine sitting down with a therapist who already gets the weight of minority stress and who sees you as a whole, valid, capable person.
What if the focus of your therapy wasn’t on rehashing past wounds but on recognising what’s already working? On identifying those small flickers of strength you already have? On identifying the future you want to build for yourself?
And what if, in your therapy sessions, you could practise that future, not just think about it, but feel it in your mind and body, so it starts to become part of your automatic response?
Solution-focused hypnotherapy can help with all of that.
Solution-focused hypnotherapy (SFH)
Solution-focused hypnotherapy is a two-part approach to therapy:
- Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) – a focused, supportive conversation that helps you explore what’s working and where you’d like to move towards.
- Hypnosis – a natural state of relaxation that allows your mind and body to begin experiencing that calmer, more confident future.
Part one: The conversation (SFBT)
The first part of the session is a structured, supportive conversation. Instead of talking about each past difficulty in turn, we explore the present and the future you want.
Your hypnotherapist may ask you:
- What has been even slightly better this week?
- What would your preferred future look like, and what would be the first small thing that would indicate you were living it?
- What strengths do you already carry that will help you move towards that future?
For LGBTQIA+ clients, the SFBT approach can be powerful. It doesn’t allow you to be labelled by problems or by stereotypes around any aspect of your identity. Instead, it lets you sit with a therapist who encourages you to imagine what life can be like when you feel calmer, more confident, and authentically you.
Part two: Hypnosis
The second part of the session is hypnosis: a safe, natural state of relaxation where your brain is open to positive suggestions.
You are always in control in hypnosis, but the positive suggestions offered here can help reinforce new, more helpful patterns and experiences: confidence rather than self-doubt, calm instead of stress, self-acceptance rather than criticism.
It’s a way of supporting your brain to gently re-stimulate and reinforce pathways that support pride, resilience, and authenticity.
Solution-focused hypnotherapy and LGBTQIA+ well-being
Together, the two parts of solution-focused hypnotherapy can help create shifts in clients’ experience.
Many find they:
- Feel calmer in situations that used to trigger anxiety or stress reactions.
- Report a boost in mood and self-esteem.
- Find clarity in questions or affirmations of gender, sexuality, or relational identity.
- Develop more confidence in relationships, whether monogamous or polyamorous.
- Feel a stronger sense of self-worth and authenticity.
All of this takes place in a space that is affirming, inclusive, and safe.
It’s time to thrive
Being LGBTQIA+ does not mean you will need therapy. But if you do choose to work with a therapist, you deserve one who is safe, inclusive, and affirming.
LGBTQIA+ affirming hypnotherapy is not about changing who you are. It’s about supporting you to feel calmer, more confident, and more at ease as you live your life authentically - whether you are trans, non-binary, polyamorous, questioning, or way beyond labels.
You don’t need to do it all alone. Change is possible. And if you’ve been waiting for a sign that now is the time… maybe this is it!
