About us

Hi my name is David, welcome to my profile.

At thinkWell, based in Guildford, Surrey, I offer professional, person-centred hypnotherapy designed to create lasting, positive change. Whether you're facing a complex, deep-rooted issue or something more straightforward, I provide a safe, supportive space to help you move forward with clarity and confidence.

As a qualified hypnotherapist accredited by the National Hypnotherapy Society and currently training as a psychotherapist, I combine clinical hypnosis, person-focused therapy, and coaching to help you build the mindset and tools needed for lasting results, often in a short amount of time.

I support clients with a wide range of issues, including:

  • Breaking unwanted habits, such as smoking, vaping, or binge behaviours
  • Reducing anxiety and managing stress, including panic attacks, burnout and overwhelm.
  • Improving self-esteem and building confidence, at work, socially, or personally
  • Freeing yourself from fears and phobias that may be holding you back
  • Navigating chronic pain and developing a calmer mind-body connection
  • Enhancing performance in sport, work, or creative pursuits

I am experienced in supporting clients in EOTAS, SEN, and NEET settings, working with those outside mainstream education to build resilience, strengthen self-worth, and rediscover their potential. I work closely with families, offering support around the challenges of neurodivergent presentations, including autism, ADHD, and sensory processing differences.

Where appropriate, I collaborate with NHS multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) and coordinate with a wide network of practitioners and professionals, including educators, social workers, therapists, and case managers, to ensure each client receives tailored, joined-up care. My approach is grounded in ethical practice, inclusivity, and a strong respect for the unique journey of every individual.

With over 25 years' experience working in people-focused roles across a range of sectors, I bring a grounded, real-world understanding of behaviour and change to my hypnotherapy practice. This breadth of experience allows me to connect with clients from all backgrounds and tailor my approach to suit individual needs. I hold a BA in Communications, a Level 5 Diploma in Learning and Development, and I’m an Associate Member of the CIPD, all of which support my structured, ethical, and results-driven approach to therapy.

Clients often describe my approach as practical, empowering, and tailored to the individual. You can find verified feedback and client experiences at www.thinkwellpractice.com.

Whether your goals are personal, emotional, or professional, I’m here to help you unlock your potential, and move forward with confidence.

Training, qualifications & experience

I bring a wealth of knowledge and practical experience to my hypnotherapy practice, underpinned by formal training, professional accreditation, and over two decades of work supporting individuals through complex behavioural, emotional, and developmental challenges.

I trained with Chrysalis, one of the UK’s leading accredited counselling and hypnotherapy training providers, completing the following qualifications:

Diploma in Hypnotherapy and Counselling Skills (Dip Hyp CS)

As a member of the National Hypnotherapy Society, I am part of a Professional Standards Authority-accredited register. This means my training and practice meet nationally recognised standards for safe, ethical, and professional hypnotherapy. I am committed to ongoing professional development and reflective practice, in line with the society’s strict code of ethics.

My hypnotherapy training includes:

  • Clinical Hypnosis
  • Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy
  • Ego-Strengthening and Confidence-Building Techniques
  • Behavioural and Habit Reversal Approaches
  • Analytical Techniques (non-regression based)
  • Pain Management and Psychosomatic Symptom Relief
  • Working with Anxiety, Phobias, Addictive Patterns, and Performance Enhancement

Alongside my formal hypnotherapy training, I am also currently training as a psychotherapist, which further deepens my understanding of mental health, trauma-informed care, and long-term behaviour change.

My academic background includes a BA (Hons) in Communications, which provides a strong foundation in the psychology of human interaction, language, and meaning, all of which are highly relevant to the change work I do with clients. I also hold a Level 5 Diploma in Learning and Development, and I’m an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). These qualifications reflect my experience in supporting personal growth and mindset change across corporate, community, and therapeutic settings.

Over the past 25+ years, I have worked in people-focused roles across a range of sectors, including social care, education, coaching, leadership development, and community-based mental health support. I have a strong track record of working with:

  • Individuals facing complex presentations, including neurodivergence, anxiety, trauma, and long-term habit patterns
  • Young people in EOTAS, SEN, and NEET settings, helping those outside mainstream education build confidence, motivation, and emotional regulation
  • Families navigating challenging behavioural and emotional needs
  • Clients seeking practical, results-driven help for stress, phobias, self-esteem issues, and unwanted behaviours

I frequently collaborate with NHS multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), schools, case managers, and other health and care professionals to ensure joined-up, person-centred support for my clients. This integrated approach enables me to tailor interventions that align with existing care pathways and meet clients exactly where they are.

I am fully insured with public liability and professional indemnity cover, and I hold an Enhanced DBS certificate, which permits me to work safely with both adults and children. I am committed to upholding the highest standards of confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical care.

Further information

Many clients are curious about how hypnotherapy works and what to expect. Below are some of the most common questions I receive, along with clear, honest answers to help you feel informed and at ease:

Will I lose control during hypnosis?
No, you remain in complete control at all times. Hypnosis is a state of focused relaxation, much like being absorbed in a book, film, or daydream. You can hear everything that’s being said, and you cannot be made to do or say anything against your will. You can come out of hypnosis at any point if you choose to.

What if I can’t be hypnotised?
Most people can experience hypnosis as long as they are open and willing. Hypnosis is a natural state we all enter throughout daily life — like when you arrive at your destination without remembering every turn, or when you're fully immersed in a task. It’s not about mind control or “going under”; it’s about gently guiding your focus inward in a way that feels comfortable and safe.

Will I reveal secrets or say things I don’t want to?
No. Hypnosis is not the same as being asleep or unconscious,  you are aware and in control at all times. You only share what you’re comfortable with, just as you would in any other conversation or therapeutic setting.

Does hypnotherapy actually work, or is it just a placebo?
Hypnotherapy is a scientifically supported approach that has been shown to help with a wide range of challenges,  including stress, anxiety, phobias, habit change, and pain management. It works by accessing the subconscious mind, where many patterns and emotional responses are stored. When used professionally and ethically, hypnotherapy can be a powerful and lasting tool for change.
