About me

Dr David Lukey

Career and hypnotherapy experience:

General Medical Practitioner over a period of 29 years - 11 years in South Africa and 18 years as a GP in the National Health Service in the UK. During my time as a doctor in South Africa I was able to practise my hypnotherapy skills over a wide range of presenting issues, from mild anxiety to war-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). My hypnosis training was based on the techniques of one of the professors in psychology, prior to my entering medical school.

Sadly, on relocating to the UK I was unable to practise hypnotherapy as a GP in the NHS, due to the time constraint of 10-minute slots per patient. Following retirement as a medical practitioner, I decided to devote myself fully to the practice of hypnotherapy, and to this end I completed a refresher course overseen by the National Hypnotherapy Society, of which I am a Registrant Member. As a member of the Society I am bound by the code of ethics of that organisation, which can be summarised as follows:

  • Working towards the good of the client and doing no harm
  • Being trustworthy and reliable
  • Avoiding prejudice and bias
  • Working with honesty and within the limits of one’s training
  • Respect for professional boundaries

Client/Patient experiences:

1) A young man with a presenting issue of insomnia, the cause of which was unknown. By means of regression hypnosis, the cause was identified as an extremely unpleasant war experience which had induced such a severe sense of guilt in the patient that he had suppressed it to his subconscious (or unconscious). Once identified, the positive suggestions of accepting an inevitable situation and forgiving himself were presented and repeated in the hypnotic state. When he returned for his scheduled follow-up appointment after 2 weeks, he reported: “Doc, I’ve been sleeping like a baby.” (Anon, Cape Town)

2) “David’s calm and supportive approach made me feel completely at ease. The hypnotherapy sessions really helped me with my weight management, and I always felt safe and understood.” (MP, London)

3) “I had a wonderful experience with David. He is a highly experienced hypnotherapist who made me feel comfortable and supported throughout the sessions. His approach was calm, professional and effective. Thanks to his guidance, my anxiety has significantly improved. I would highly recommend David to anyone seeking lasting change.”  (TK, London)
