How Time Line Therapy™ may support sleep problems and insomnia
If you are suffering from sleep problems or insomnia, it’s likely that you already know how sleep problems can affect your mood, concentration, energy levels, and overall well-being.
You may have tried CBT, improved your sleep hygiene, created a good bedtime routine, improved lifestyle factors, and other recommendations to improve your sleep, and yet still find yourself struggling to get a good night’s sleep.
Although there are many factors that can disrupt your ability to sleep, and it’s important to address any unhelpful lifestyle issues and bedtime habits, it’s often unresolved emotional and psychological issues that can affect our ability to sleep well.
How emotional and psychological issues can affect your sleep
When you feel stressed, mentally or emotionally, it keeps your mind alert to some degree, and your nervous system overstimulated. This makes it difficult to get to sleep and stay asleep.
Unresolved emotions from past experiences and unhelpful thought patterns can keep your mind in a state of hyper-alertness or a low level of stress, even when you feel mentally and physically exhausted.
You might ruminate on negative experiences from your past, or on regrets or resentments, or be affected by trauma. Or maybe you worry about your present situation or future, as you doubt your ability to do well in certain aspects of your life. You might not be consciously aware of any underlying issues, and your mind may have normalised the state of stress.
If you feel stressed about a current situation, it’s normal for something like that to temporarily disrupt your regular sleeping pattern. However, sometimes our responses to present situations can be an overreaction triggered by unresolved emotions from our past.
While there are a number of effective therapy techniques for addressing underlying issues keeping you in a state of stress, Time Line Therapy™ can be a powerful and effective therapy in doing this, in some cases, quite rapidly and gently, helping to improve your sleep, as well as help with other issues.
What is Time Line Therapy™?
Time Line Therapy™ is a powerful, yet gentle set of therapeutic processes developed by NLP Master Trainer Dr Tad James in the 1980s. It can, in some cases, help you to make big and lasting changes relatively quickly.
Time Line Therapy™ combines elements of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and hypnotic techniques to work directly with your unconscious mind. It works without you needing to relive distressing experiences from your past. It can help you to rapidly release unresolved negative emotions, such as anger, sadness, fear, hurt and guilt.
Time Line Therapy™ can also help you to let go of limiting beliefs, such as ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘I can never be successful’, that may be affecting your present-day responses in your life and lead you to feel stressed.
For example, you have just been promoted, and you have doubts and anxiety about whether you are up to the job, or you hold back in relationships as you feel like you are not good enough.
Time Line Therapy™ works with your unconscious mind, using your natural way of storing memories and emotions along your internal “timeline.”
It can help you to release negative emotions and limiting beliefs without reliving painful experiences. You are guided to float above them, release the emotion at its root, and keep the positive learnings. You don’t even need to consciously know what the memory is. It’s a process of active imagination, and even so, surprisingly powerful.
There are many therapies that use a process with time lines. However, Time Line Therapy™ is a specific set of techniques used by coaches and therapists fully trained and qualified in NLP and Time Line Therapy™. It was made a registered trademark by Tad James to keep it separate from other ways that therapists and coaches may use time lines.
How Time Line Therapy™ can help with sleep problems and insomnia
Holding on to negative emotions can keep you in a state of stress, feeling low, unresourceful, and easily triggered to some degree. Releasing them has many benefits emotionally and physically, including allowing you to have more restful sleep.
Limiting beliefs can also keep you in a state of stress, especially in situations where you feel overly challenged or limited in some way, such as feeling under pressure to succeed where you have doubts about yourself. Or feeling like you can’t have anything like the kind of life you would like to have, financially or in relationships, for example, and worry that you have to settle for something much less satisfying.
You can also release limiting beliefs specifically about your ability to sleep, such as a belief like ‘I’m a bad sleeper’.
Once you have resolved the underlying emotions and limiting beliefs and the resultant stress, you may find you naturally start to sleep well again without any other interventions. Or, you may still need to change some aspects of your lifestyle and/or may need help to change any unhelpful habits and associations with sleep and bedtime.
After resolving the underlying issues affecting your sleep, this allows any other positive changes you make for improving your sleep to be much more effective and long-lasting.
There are other NLP and hypnotherapy techniques that are highly effective for helping you change any unresourceful habits and associations to more resourceful ones, including in relation to sleep.
Hypnotherapy and self-hypnosis can help you to train your mind and body to relax more easily into a regular sleep pattern once the underlying issues are out of the way, if you have effectively released them with Time Line Therapy™.
