How hypnotherapy can support recovery from abuse
This article will explore how psychological abuse leads to burnout, anxiety and emotional shutdown, and what healing can look like with the help of hypnotherapy.
Content note: This article discusses emotional and psychological abuse, which some readers may find distressing.
The hidden roots of burnout and anxiety
I often work with clients who are navigating overwhelming levels of stress, anxiety and emotional exhaustion. Sometimes the root is clearly connected to work – a high-pressure role, unrealistic expectations or a lack of boundaries that slowly erode a person’s resilience. At other times, the origin lies in relationships, often those that started off looking promising but turned toxic over time. And increasingly, both issues may be tangled together, creating a situation where someone feels completely trapped, unsafe and unable to see a way forward.
A story that’s sadly too common...
A client once came to see me after what they described as the most destabilising year of their life. They had tried to carry on as usual, pretending everything was fine on the outside. But inside, their nervous system was in freefall. They couldn’t concentrate. They couldn’t sleep. Their self-worth was in pieces. And they had been told, repeatedly, that they were the problem.
What they had actually been living through was a deliberate, strategic campaign of emotional abuse, financial control and psychological manipulation at the hands of someone they had once loved.
Charming in public, cruel in private.
Their former partner had appeared, at first, to be everything they thought they needed. Confident. Charming. Ambitious. On the surface, they were well-liked, charismatic and smooth. They knew how to win people over. They knew how to play the victim when challenged and how to spin a narrative to always land on top. But what they showed the world was not who they really were.
Behind closed doors, they were violent. They were explosive, controlling and intimidating. They lied about everything – finances, relationships, even small, unnecessary details that later revealed a long-term pattern of deceit. They cheated constantly, and when confronted, deflected and gaslit them into believing they were imagining things. The abuse was not just emotional, it was psychological, financial and, at times, physical.
They threatened my client's family and their children. They used fear as a weapon. They monitored my client's whereabouts, showed up unexpectedly, and harassed them through messages, phone calls and social media. When my client finally found the strength to leave, they escalated the situation. They threatened to release private, intimate images of them. They created fake online accounts to leave false reviews and tarnish their business reputation. They attempted to isolate them professionally and personally, trying to destroy the foundation of their life and work.
As my client began rebuilding, they uncovered even more disturbing truths.
They had opened fraudulent bank accounts in their name. They had attempted to commit tax fraud, including fabricating financial information and attempting to bypass legal processes. My client later discovered evidence of embezzlement and other dishonest financial dealings; signs that they were not the first person who had been targeted, nor the first life they had tried to ruin.
This was more than burnout
By the time they came to therapy, they were struggling with complex trauma. Their symptoms mirrored burnout, but the source wasn’t just overwork or overwhelm. It was long-term emotional survival. Their body had been on high alert for months. Their mind had been conditioned to anticipate a threat. They had lost touch with their instincts, constantly second-guessing their decisions, memories, and even emotions.
This kind of trauma is devastating, not just because of what was done, but because of how isolated the victim becomes in the process.
The mask abusers wear
People often assume abuse must look loud or obvious, but in cases like this, it’s calculated and covert. Abusers know how to maintain a polished public image while creating chaos behind the scenes. They tend to rely on the silence of their victims, and they know how to make others doubt what’s really going on. The result is a kind of psychological exhaustion that seeps into every area of a person’s life, work, friendships, health and even parenting.
Reclaiming safety through therapy
When your life has been shaped by control, threats and fear, healing takes more than just time. It takes space. It takes safety. And it takes the right kind of support.
This is where hypnotherapy can play a vital role. While traditional talking therapies can be helpful, many clients in these situations are so overwhelmed by overthinking, fear and exhaustion that they struggle to access clarity through conversation alone. Hypnotherapy works by calming the nervous system, reducing hypervigilance, and helping the mind and body return to a state where healing becomes possible. It can help rebuild confidence, restore trust in one’s own intuition, and begin the process of recovery from long-term stress and emotional trauma.
In sessions, you'll work to gently re-centre. To feel your feet on the ground again. To separate yourself from the narrative that other people have imposed on you. Slowly, you'll begin to release the shame you carried, recognise the manipulation for what it was and stop blaming yourself.
The reckoning always comes
People like the abuser in this case often operate for years without consequence. They often target kind, empathetic, resourceful people, then chip away at their strength until they become shells of themselves. But no lie lasts forever. And no abuser, no matter how well-practised, escapes truth indefinitely.
Karma has its own timeline. But it always arrives.
