Fear of flying: How can hypnotherapy help?

Fear of flying is a very common phobia, which affects many people. In fact, It is believed that it affects one in 10 of the population or even higher. It is also known as aviophobia and aerophobia, the fear of being on an aeroplane.

People with this fear may avoid flying at all costs and will plan holidays using other means of transport, or avoid jobs that involve flying. However, this can really narrow down the places they may want to visit, having an impact on family holidays if they want to holiday abroad.

Their families may put pressure on them, or there may be a family emergency where they need to fly abroad quickly. They may miss out on a really good job opportunity by feeling unable to fly. If they are brave enough to board an aeroplane, the very thought of the flight can make their anxiety levels shoot up and fill them with dread, making them very miserable just anticipating the flight.

Once on the flight, they can experience heightened anxiety, they may have panic attacks or be physically sick. The mere thought of this loss of control can cause even more anxiety. Some people picture catastrophic scenes of the plane crashing. Experiencing turbulence on the plane can also lead to fears of flying, as can flying with someone who also has a fear of flying.

Whilst on the holiday, they cannot relax as much as they would like due to the anticipation and dread of the return flight home. Many people with this fear do fly regularly, even though they hate every journey and are filled with anxiety each time they fly. They would be much happier feeling in control and calm during the flight.

Even though flying is statistically one of the safest forms of travel, it’s still the most feared form of travel. This may be because if a plane does crash, it can kill many people in one go and make headline news. Being in an enclosed space with no means to escape can be quite frightening to some people. People with an anxious disposition may find they suffer more.

It can be a good idea to know where these fears originate from, for example, some people have a fear of enclosed spaces, crowds, or heights or just the fear of not being in control.

Some people may feel more comfortable with an aisle seat and avoid looking out of the window if they’re uncomfortable with heights. Wearing suitable clothing to avoid any physical discomfort and making sure you stay hydrated can also help. Practising some deep breathing exercises can be beneficial as can remembering why you’re on the flight in the first place and allowing the excitement and joy that arriving at your destination will bring.

How can hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy is a very popular method of treating this fear and has helped many people eliminate their anxiety when flying. Hypnotherapy aims to change our thoughts and behaviours on a subconscious level, taking away any fears associated with flying and making it a much more relaxed, enjoyable experience.

Hypnotherapy works by connecting with the subconscious mind using relaxation techniques and then putting powerful positive suggestions to the subconscious mind helping you to feel safe and in control. It can be extremely empowering to regain control over the fear, feeling so much calmer and relaxed.
