Does ancient wisdom hold the key to managing ADHD?
What does an orchestra and an ADHD brain have in common?
Think of your brain as a finely tuned orchestra, each part playing a role in keeping your body and mind in harmony. Now, think of an orchestra without its main component, the conductor.
Without the conductor, there’s no one to instruct the different sections, leading to a void of nothing but discordant noise. Imagine the chaos if the trumpets, the flutes, the drums, and the violins all started playing together. This is similar to what is happening within the ADHD brain, without the conductor, thoughts race, attention wavers and tasks become difficult to complete.
The ADHD brain: A closer look
When a person has ADHD, the prefrontal cortex, responsible for regulating executive functions such as attention, focus, decision-making, planning, and impulse control, is impaired. This disruption creates a lack of harmony within the mind-body connection.
As a result, some of the effects people with ADHD experience are lack of focus, hyperactivity, lack of impulse control, and anxiety. Going back to the orchestra analogy, the conductor of the executive functions is malfunctioning.
Why ancient wisdom holds the key to ADHD management
Research shows a worrying decline in our attention span in our increasingly digital world. The constant stream of information bombarding our brains has contributed to this decline along with a growing sense of isolation. As people spend more time scrolling than engaging in meaningful conversations, feelings of isolation and anxiety are magnified.
This challenging environment is particularly difficult to navigate for individuals with ADHD. How can we successfully navigate this world filled with distractions while maintaining our sanity and our sense of connection with each other? Ancient wisdom holds the key.
Harness your inner conductor - a holistic approach to ADHD
I’ve helped clients with diagnosed ADHD, looking for an alternative route to medication, reduce high levels of anxiety and stress, often within the first 10 minutes of a session, by introducing them to their “inner conductor”.
The ancient yogis knew the transformative power of breathwork, measuring their lives not in years but in the number of breaths they took. They knew the transformative and healing benefits of meditation and using mindfulness practices to induce deep states of inner calm and crystal-clear clarity. One of the most effective techniques I use is the “pigeon breath” This technique synchronises body movement with the breath, giving the busy mind something to focus on while we slow down the breath, slowing down the breath slows down your thoughts.
With the right somatic breathing techniques, you can learn to use your breath as your inner conductor. Induce a natural state of inner harmony and rapidly shift your brain from the fight or flight response to the rest and digest system, allowing you to feel calmer, make clear decisions and feel in control of your life.
Supercharge your inner conductor for enhanced results
“It is futile to solve the problem, from the level it was created” is a quote attributed to Einstein. How can we apply this to our well-being and navigate the ADHD mind? By returning to the ancient yogis who knew we are more than our mind and our body, we are triad beings. We are mind, body, and soul. Learning powerful breathing techniques will undoubtedly improve your mental health by helping you reach a calmer, clearer mental state.
You can supercharge your inner conductor by working with your energy body. Think of your energetic body as the music of the orchestra, the unseen yet palpable force flowing from the physical instruments of the orchestra. Your body is the instrument; the music that flows through this vessel is your energy. When we tune into that non-physical part of ourselves, using the breath as a vehicle, we achieve a natural state of balance within.
Think you don’t know how to access your energy? Have you ever walked into a room and instantly sensed a certain energy, a palpable atmosphere? That’s you experiencing your energy body. By understanding and working with this energy, you can elevate your life and overcome the challenges attributed to ADHD.
Hypnotherapy and the inner conductor: A match made in heaven
Now that you know, you’re not at the mercy of ADHD, you have empowering options to take control of your mental and emotional well-being. Another powerful ally you have is your subconscious mind.
The subconscious mind is like a computer, it stores vast amounts of data, including our core beliefs, formed in early childhood. In most cases, the data we use to make decisions and form perspectives of our world is vastly outdated, making it as helpful as using a vintage car manual to fix a Tesla - wholly ineffective!
The good news is that it’s easy to update the data (mental programming) with hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy allows access to the subconscious mind by effectively turning down the volume of the critical, distracting thoughts in the conscious mind.
In a deep state of relaxation, achieved by tuning into your inner conductor, you can download and accept new, empowering thoughts and beliefs. This is where deep transformation occurs, as your default way of thinking forms neuron pathways inside your brain. When you interrupt those pathways and download updated programming into your powerful subconscious, you are accepting new, empowered ways of thinking. This allows for new patterns of thought to form, creating a powerful ripple effect in your behaviours and, thus, your outcomes.
Imagine what it would feel like to move through your day feeling calmer, with a clear mind, plan, and make decisions to enhance your life. This is all possible when you open the door to this ancient wisdom.
