Breaking free from the superglue of self-doubt

Imagine living your life as though every step you take is weighed down, your arms, legs, and heart bound tight in invisible chains. For one client, this was her daily reality. She described it perfectly in our first meeting: “I feel as though I’ve been bathed in superglue as a child, locked tight, unable to move forward.”

This feeling of being stuck had followed her for decades. Despite being over forty, she still carried the painful words of a teacher who once told her she was a “waste of space.” These words had carved themselves so deeply into her mind that they became the background music to her life, unwanted, haunting, and difficult to silence.

How hypnotherapy helped one woman reclaim her confidence

Her story is also one of transformation. After years of self-doubt, she stumbled upon an article in a women’s magazine about another woman who sounded just like her. This woman had found her freedom through hypnotherapy, and that spark of hope ignited something within my client. She realised it wasn’t too late. She didn’t have to remain trapped. And that’s when she reached out for help.

What happened next was the beginning of her breaking free from the metaphorical superglue and reclaiming her sense of worth, self-esteem, and confidence.

The invisible weight of childhood words

Words can wound, especially when spoken by authority figures we look up to as children. A careless comment from a teacher, such as, “You’re a waste of space,” (especially between the ages of 0-7, the foundation age of life). It can stick like a label we carry for decades.

My client was bright, creative, and kind, yet those cruel words echoed louder than any of her successes. The human mind is powerful; it records experiences and replays them like a loop, especially when tied to strong emotions. For her, those school days were the moment the superglue began to harden.

Over time, she came to believe she was unworthy. She carried those beliefs into her relationships, her work, and her daily life. Each time she considered doing something for herself, the old voice would creep in: “Why bother? You’ll never succeed.”

She had built a prison out of someone else’s opinion, and she didn’t know how to escape.

The turning point

One ordinary afternoon, while flicking through her favourite women’s magazine, she read an article that made her stop in her tracks. It was about another woman, different in many ways, yet eerily similar in her struggles. This woman had also lived with years of negative self-talk and self-doubt. She, too, had been held hostage by childhood experiences. But through hypnotherapy, she had broken free.

The first crack: From “I don’t want” to “I want”

When she arrived, she carried with her a shopping list. But it wasn’t the kind of list you’d take to the supermarket; it was a list of everything she didn’t want in her life anymore.

I don’t want to feel stuck.
I don’t want to be afraid of what people think of me.
I don’t want to believe I’m worthless.
I don’t want to hide away from opportunities.

It was powerful, but it was also telling. She was still framing her life in negatives. Together, we began to reshape that list into something new:

I want to feel free.
I want to believe in myself.
I want to know my worth.
I want to step into my confidence.
I want to live without being put down, especially by myself.

This was the first crack in the hardened shell of superglue. She was finally beginning to imagine life beyond the weight of her past. The article spoke of transformation, freedom, and finally living life on her own terms. It was the hope my client didn’t even realise she was searching for. She told me, “It was like someone had held up a mirror and shown me that my story could change too.”

That’s when she decided to take a leap of faith and book her first session.

The metaphor of the butterfly in the jar

To help her understand what was happening within her, I shared a metaphor.

I asked her to imagine a butterfly placed inside a jar when it was young. Every time the butterfly tried to spread its wings, the glass stopped it. Eventually, the butterfly stopped trying, believing it could never fly. But here’s the truth: the butterfly was never broken, never worthless. It always had the wings. The only problem was the jar.

The jar, in her life, was the words of her teacher, the negative self-talk, and the layers of self-doubt that built up over time. Hypnotherapy, I explained, was like gently removing the lid from the jar. The butterfly doesn’t need to learn how to fly; it already knows. It simply needs to be free to try.

That resonated deeply. She realised that confidence, self-worth, and esteem were not things she needed to borrow or build from scratch. They had always been within her, waiting for the chance to emerge.

Hypnotherapy: Unlocking the subconscious

Unlike traditional talk therapy, hypnotherapy allows us to work directly with the subconscious mind, the part that stores our beliefs, habits, and memories. It’s where those old labels like “waste of space” had been stuck for decades.

In a calm, safe, and relaxed state, my client was able to revisit those moments and reframe them. She saw that a careless teacher’s words did not define her worth. She could separate herself from the negativity that wasn’t hers to carry.

It was as though the superglue began to soften. Piece by piece, she let go of what had been binding her for so long.

The transformation

After our session, she returned with a new light in her eyes. She spoke not of what she didn’t want, but of what she was going to create. She said:

I want to be confident.
I want to live with self-worth.
I want to believe in myself, no matter what others say.
I want to do what I want, without being put down.

It was as though the butterfly had finally spread its wings.

The shift wasn’t just in her words but in her energy. For the first time in decades, she believed that change was possible. She realised she was not broken, not stuck forever, she was powerful, worthy, and free to create her own story.

Beyond the session: Building a new life

Hypnotherapy was the spark, but what followed was equally important. She began practising daily affirmations, reframing negative thoughts, and treating herself with kindness. Instead of punishing herself for not being perfect, she started celebrating her progress.

Confidence is not built overnight, but with each step, she grew stronger. She noticed she spoke up more at work, tried new hobbies, and allowed herself to dream. Most importantly, she stopped carrying the cruel words of her past. They no longer had power over her. She was free.

Conclusion: Breaking free is possible

This client’s journey is a reminder of how deeply childhood experiences can shape us, but also how powerfully we can rewrite our stories. The metaphor of the butterfly in the jar captures it best. Many of us live believing we cannot fly because of the jars of our past old labels, cruel words, or negative beliefs. But the truth is, the wings are already there. We just need to remove the lid.

Hypnotherapy provided the client with the key to unlock her potential, to melt the superglue, and to step into the confident, worthy, and empowered woman she was always meant to be. This story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of believing in yourself.

So if you, too, feel stuck, weighed down, or trapped by old words and old wounds, know this: the lid can be lifted. You are not broken. You are not worthless. You already have the wings; you only need to give yourself permission to fly.
