Keep calm and embrace change - how hypnotherapy can help

When I suffered with extreme anxiety, everything seemed to come at once. I was piling stress on top of stress as I struggled to keep a clear head. It was the end of the world as I knew it. I was dealing with moving house, going through a divorce and looking for a job. My plate was full and, at times, I felt overwhelmed and panicky.

I wish I knew then what I know now. I would have saved myself many sleepless nights and worry. After having hypnotherapy, I now have the skills and confidence to manage stress far more effectively. I no longer let my thoughts jump to the worst case scenarios, ruminate over past events or waste time worrying about things I can’t change. Anxiety is still there at times, but these days I have the tools to not let it get out of hand and take over. My confidence and happiness levels are at a new high.

Hypnotherapy can help

As a clinical hypnotherapist, I consider myself very fortunate to be able to help others overcome anxiety, addictions, panic attacks, insomnia and other stress related issues. Solution focused hypnotherapy can help you feel calmer and encourages you to focus more on the positives. When you engage with the process and really want to change the way you think, hypnotherapy can transform your life.

How we think affects the way we feel and the way we respond to situations.  Amazingly, our brains have plasticity. Science shows we really can rewire our brains! Hypnotherapy can help you light up the neural circuits that engage with problem solving, creativity and flexibility. If I compare my brain to a computer, hypnotherapy helped me to delete old files, defrag existing files and reboot to improve function and efficiency.

When we incorporate relaxation and hypnosis as well, we can be very well equipped to deal with change and whatever life throws at us. By feeling calmer, I went from responding like a bull to a red rag to slowing down and carefully considering my options.

Coming out of lockdown

As restrictions around the pandemic lift, our lives will be changing again. For some, this will be a positive and exciting experience. However, for others these changes could be anxiety inducing. Maybe you know someone who has expressed concern at dealing with being out in the world more. Perhaps they have a fear of being in crowds or broadening out into larger social situations.

The anticipation around upcoming change, if we are not comfortable with it, can put us in a vicious circle. The more anxious and fearful we feel, the more we are encouraged to think negatively which then produces yet more anxiety!

Change is of course an inevitable part of life:

Become a student of change. It is the only thing that will remain constant.

-Anthony D’Angelo.

As I worked on my own confidence and was able to respond well to challenging circumstances, I built up resilience. By tanking up on this resilience, I can rest assured that I will be able to navigate through change and come out the other side. Solution focused hypnotherapy can help you do just that and find ‘solutions’.

When change is unexpected, ideally, we will be able to think on our feet and respond in a calm and measured manner. We are then in a stronger position to deal with change, whether it is expected or not. We know our lives are likely to change in the months ahead, hypnotherapy can help you to feel confident in your ability to cope and move forward with confidence.

Embracing change

One of the many perks of working as a hypnotherapist is supporting people as they not only deal with changing circumstances, but also embrace change in relation to their own personal development. Change, whether initiated or not, can be seen as a catalyst for positive transformation as Jim Rohn cited:

‘Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.’

I have seen angry people transform to being calmer, fearful people to being braver. All of these people were highly motivated to change and move out of familiar, but often unhelpful, patterns of thinking and behaviours. Their lives consequently changed for the better, summed up beautifully in this quote:

‘When patterns are broken, new worlds emerge’ - Tuli Kupferberg.

Stepping outside of your comfort zone takes courage and sticking to doing things differently, application and commitment. The emphasis in solution focused hypnotherapy is getting on and doing. This helps embed new patterns of behaviour so that the tendency to revert back to old, unhelpful ways is reduced and often erased. As we appreciate and get used to the rewards of living a life based more on positive thinking, actions and interactions, we often strive for more of this. When we are producing more of the feel good hormones serotonin and dopamine, research shows this can help to motivate us.

Scientific evidence also shows how these neurotransmitters help us to regulate our emotions, so we can feel more in control.
