My background is in Psychology. I have a BA (Hons) in Psychology as well as a Masters Degree in this subject. I am passionate about helping people to make positive changes to their lives. I worked for a long time for a Bereavement service in Essex, counselling bereaved people on a one to one basis. My counselling training includes in-house training from Farleigh Hospice, and I hold diplomas in Cognitive Based Therapies as well as Person-Centred Psychotherapeutic Counselling. In addition to being an experienced psychotherapist, I am also a fully trained hypnotherapist and I can provide this service to help with a wide variety of issues. I am fully insured and I am a member of the National Counselling Society as well as the National Hypnotherapy Society, both of which are on the accredited register of the Professional Standards Authority. As a member of these bodies I am bound by their strict codes of conduct and their ethical guidelines. I take pride in my work and I care about the well-being of my clients. Sessions are between 50 minutes to an hour long, price on application. Most people require around 4 to 5 sessions of hypnotherapy, but I can offer more if required. Quitting smoking is the only exception to this as can be done in one session which is 2 hours long.
If you opt solely for psychotherapy then the number of sessions will vary as the focus will be on a broader range of issues. We will work together to decide on the initial number of sessions to book, then review and adapt this as we move forward with the therapy. It is all very dependent on your own particular needs.
Sessions take place in Harley Street on Saturdays, or weekdays on request, and are also available in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire Monday to Fridays. Please contact me to see how I can help you. All bookings are taken via my website at milestonetherapies.co.uk, with payments taken at the time of booking. In the event of a 'no show' payments will not be returned, but if you need to re-arrange your appointment and provide at least 24 hours notice then I will happily do this for you. What to Expect During Psychotherapy Sessions
During psychotherapy sessions I will listen to you in a safe and confidential environment. This will be your time to talk about whatever is bothering or concerning you. I will not judge you and I will not interrupt you or force my opinion onto you. If you keep repeating yourself I will still listen to you, as sometimes this is necessary in order for your mind to accept and process information, particularly regarding traumatic incidents. I will work with you to come to decisions about the best way forward for you, as an individual. Together we will come up with strategies to make your life better and ways to deal with whatever is bothering you. At all times you will have my undivided attention and support. In terms of practicalities, you will be sitting in a comfortable chair that you can recline as much or as little as you feel comfortable with during the sessions.
What to Expect During Hypnotherapy Sessions
The first half of each hypnotherapy session is a counselling session where we will work together to clarify what you want to achieve and explore any obstacles (real or imagined) that may hinder your progress. The information that I gather from this first half of each session is critical as it directly informs the suggestions that I will put into your subconscious. After the counselling, I will ask you to recline your chair as much as you feel comfortable with and to start to relax. I will then guide you through some deep breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation so that you are ready to be taken into a light hypnosis. In this state your subconscious will be able to accept the suggestions that I will give it. You will be in full control at all times. This is not the same as stage hypnotism! You will be extremely relaxed but at all times you will be aware of what is happening and you certainly wont do or say anything that you don't want to do or say. If you happen to be so relaxed that you drift off to sleep then you don't need to worry as your subconscious will still receive the suggestions and the therapy will still work.
What is Psychotherapy?
Whilst the terms 'counselling' and 'psychotherapy' are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between the two. Counselling focuses on specific issues in order to help a person address a particular problem, for example stress management, or a particular phobia. The focus may be on problem solving or on learning specific techniques for coping with or avoiding problem areas. Counselling is usually short-term.
In contrast, psychotherapy is more long term than counselling and tends to focus on a broader range of issues. The main principle of psychotherapy is that the way a person thinks and behaves affects how they interact with the world. The goal of psychotherapists is to enable people to be better equipped to manage stresses and to understand patterns in their behaviour that may interfere with them reaching personal goals.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Put simply, hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis in therapy. Hypnosis is a special focussing of the consciousness which can be brought about through relaxation. The experience of hypnosis is more commonplace than we might think – it is indistinguishable from a day dream, of being in 'auto-pilot' when driving down a familiar road, or being so absorbed in a book or a film that you are temporarily unaware of your environment. It is a perfectly natural state in which you have full control at all times. The level of depth of hypnotic state required for hypnotherapy is very light and is achievable of everyone, as long as they are able to relax. This is nothing like the deep trance one might see during hypnosis shows for entertainment. In hypnotherapy you can stop at any time and you will never do or say anything that you don't want to do or say. It is an excellent tool to use if you want to make positive changes in your life, and you want to do so in as little as one session (e.g. smoking cessation).
