Clinical hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist (solution focus)

About me

I'm an experienced Clinical Hypnotherapist, passionate about hypnotherapy because every day I see how effective it is.  Clients are always surprised at how easily they make big changes, in such relaxing sessions!  People generally feel calmer, more relaxed and focused which lasts up to a week after each session, as well as making progress on their specific issue.

I understand your issues are highly personal to you and how important it is to find a reliable, safe and effective professional to support you to change.  Warm, open and caring, I treat you as a unique individual and tailor your treatment to your needs.  I am DBS checked and work with children from the age of 5yrs through to adults and older people.  I have a lot of experience of helping children and adults with emetopbobia and health anxiety, and love seeing the positive impact it has on their whole life.  It's great to see people becoming confident and assertive for the first time, and whose only regret is not coming sooner!  Similarly, it's wonderful to see children leave without their anxiety and phobia's, able to stand up for themselves and face challenges.

I worked as a social worker for over 25 years and have a wide experience of supporting people in all types of situations through change.  In the past I have been through some major life challenges myself - divorce, bereavements etc and tried counselling and psychotherapy to help.  But I found them to be very slow with only limited success.  Whereas solution focused hypnotherapy is a powerful, quicker way of bringing about the positive changes needed to enable us to cope better and be happier. I use my wide range of professional experience to ensure each client gets the best therapeutic plan for them.

Hypnotherapy is based on the latest neuroscience and tried and tested techniques for enabling people to use their minds more effectively.  Without hypnotherapy we can be victims of our own minds!  We may know we want to be happier, more confident, or less self critical/anxious/fearful but just don't know how to achieve it.  Hypnotherapy involves deep relaxation (or light trance), which is enjoyable, and enables me to make the positive suggestions you need to enable you to progress positively.  Hypnotherapy also gives you tools to use to keep you in a strong positive place in the future, long after therapy has finished.

What's Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?  Solution focused hypnotherapy is a comfortable and positive form of therapy because it does not dwell on the problem.  If that sounds like jargon, what it means is the solution is different to the problem.  So if the problem is being too cold, not matter how much you talk about it, the problem remains.  Whereas the solution is to put on a jumper, turn the heating on etc - which is something completely different.  Psychotherapy and counselling usually involve repeatedly talking about the problem, which is likely to be upsetting and doesn't usually move you closer to a solution.

Where do I practice?  I have an office in St Austell, which is on the ground floor, with level access, with free parking outside.  I also work face to face, videocall via WhatsApp/Skype and telephone.

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified as a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist with the prestigious Clifton Practice in Plymouth and am continually updating my knowledge base.

I am also a Registered practitioner of BWRT (Brain Working Recursive Therapy) for which I am also supervised and having ongoing further training.

I previously worked as a social worker for over 25 years so have a wide range of professional experience with children and adults with autism, dementia and their carers.  I've also worked professionally with foster carers as well as having been a foster carer myself.  I also have a long history of working with people experiencing domestic abuse and specialize in supporting them to recover fully.

I am also qualified as a life coach but find hypnotherapy a more effective way of supporting people to achieve their goals.

Areas of hypnotherapy I deal with

info Information about health conditions (*)

Hypnotherapy can enhance the well-being of individuals diagnosed with serious medical conditions, but should not take the place of medical treatment and advice. If you have been diagnosed with - or suspect you may have - any of these conditions, please speak to your doctor before starting hypnotherapy.

Other areas of hypnotherapy I deal with

I work with people with dementia, which helps to lift their mood and suggests to the brain the need to re-route to cope better with any damage.  Evidenced by university research over a 9 month period of weekly sessions, and another assessment a year later to improve mental functioning, including short term and long term memory, daily living skills social skills etc.  See the Dementia page of my website for the research link and more information on how hypnotherapy with me can help.  I also work with carers to help them cope better with the stress of caring.

I specialise in adopters and foster carers by supporting them to cope with the stress of their role and improve their understanding of the value of self care for their long term mental health.

I work with people with Autism, often to support them with anxiety and improve their coping skills.
