How regression therapy can help anxiety

In my work, one of my passions is helping people overcome anxiety and regain a sense of calm, confidence and control in their lives.

Anxiety is a state of mind which is characterised by perceived fears relating to the future and often causes a flight, fight or fear response. It can be a combination of past experiences, current life stress, and the way you might be perceiving a situation.

If you are experiencing anxiety, it could be that you worry about socialising, your relationships, your work, friendships, how you look or what other people are thinking. Anxiety can also influence your behaviour. For some people, anxiety can show up in behaviours like overindulging on a night out, eating more, avoiding social situations, feeling unsure about career progression, or reacting in ways that may affect relationships.

It may feel confusing when other people don't experience the same level of anxiety in the same situation.

So, how can regression therapy help?

What is regression therapy?

Regression therapy is a guided hypnotic technique applied by advanced clinical hypnotherapists who recognise that anxiety can be the result of past trauma. By safely exploring these experiences, you can help yourself to process specific memories that may be the underlying cause of persistent anxious thoughts.

This process is known as regression, and many clients are surprised when they regress to a memory that they haven’t thought about in a long time. Most people go back to their early years of childhood and find it very powerful to address how they are feeling, gain insight into their issue and release emotional patterns.

A real-life example

Anxiety can stem from past trauma, and the underlying emotion is often fear-based: fear of embarrassment, fear of being judged, fear of failure. If you are experiencing anxiety, it can feel debilitating in the sense that it can knock your confidence and limit your potential. It can feel confusing when you notice how other people are able to react more positively to the same situation that you are facing.

On several occasions, I have found that someone who has a fear of public speaking may have had an emotionally challenging experience when they were at school. It could have been that they felt humiliated in the playground, or they had given the wrong answer in the classroom. This may not sound so serious, but remember that your adult perspective is different from how you would have perceived it as a child.

Regression allows you to offer your younger self the safety and kind words they needed at the time to move on.

A step into spirituality

If you would like to explore your anxiety on a deeper, spiritual level, past life regression can also bring about a true sense of peace and restoration. Whether you believe in past lives or understand the memory to be a metaphorical communication from your subconscious mind, it can bring about deep healing. It may be that you have experienced a loss in your past life that is still affecting you now, or it may be that you are not nurturing your passions; anxiety can also be a state of boredom.

For instance, a client who was suffering from anxiety regressed back to the Shakespearean period, where he was directing a play. He felt inspired and happy. When he awakened from the hypnotic trance, he understood that since starting work, he had left his enjoyment of acting classes behind. This insight helped him to feel so much more at ease and confident within himself.

Is regression right for you?

Regression might be right for you if you feel that your anxiety and behaviour are rooted in past experiences rather than present-day stress. It may be particularly helpful if you find that conscious effort isn’t enough to improve low confidence, fears or emotional triggers.

However, regression is not necessarily the solution for everyone. If you are currently experiencing severe mental health difficulties, such as acute trauma, dissociation, or complex psychiatric conditions, a more structured or medically supervised approach may be more suitable.

If you’re struggling with anxiety and feel stuck in recurring patterns, regression therapy may help you uncover and release the root cause. Get in touch to book a consultation with a hypnotherapist specialising in regression.
