Hypnotherapy leads the way with weight loss
Many people struggle to lose weight and feeling unhappy about how they look they are drawn to endless diets and exercise regimes. These are invariably abandoned and any weight lost eventually comes back on as they return to non-diet eating and abandon the exercise programs they started.
It is a fact that whilst diets can help people to lose weight, they fail on two major counts. The first is maintaining the weight loss and the second and perhaps more important is that they do not address the underlying cause of the weight problem. The feminist psychoanalyst, Susie Orbach reveals that the billion dollar diet industry actually needs dieters to put back all the weight they have lost so that they can come back as return customers and that this is the main way the industry sustains itself and thrives.
The huge advantage hypnotherapy and psychotherapy have over other weight loss interventions is that a hypnotherapist will investigate the causes of the weight gain and then set about addressing these underlying causes.
An essential part of the work will involve teaching the client to develop a much greater sensitivity to the body and what it actually needs. Often people who are overweight they no longer recognise when they are actually hungry and when they are full, and will as a result eat even when they are not hungry and continue to eat long after they are full. Surprisingly they may not even be aware of the pleasure of eating because they eat so fast, not taking time to savour the experience of food. This has far reaching effects on the individuals metabolism, which can start over time to become overloaded and slow down.
Furthermore, it is vitally important to determine whether the client needs to overeat or whether the client needs to be 'fat'. The two situations are very different, the latter reflecting a more deepseated problem, and both requiring different interventions. A huge advantage of hypnotherapy is that it is not a 'one size fits all' approach, everyone is different and this is reflected in the fact that clients who lose weight in this way have been shown to be virtually free of rebound weight gain after loss. This is because the weight loss has been borne out of greater and deeper understanding of the factors influencing their weight issues and a greater sensitivity to what their body really needs. Once these things have been learnt, they cannot be unlearnt again.
Amidst the all the insight work, the process is made more powerful with hypnotic interventions that literally tell the body to drop all the excess it no longer needs, and all the visualisation work that creates beautiful new images of how the client would like to be.
Clients also are able to derive a wider range of benefits through a hypnotherapy weight loss program, and will feel more fulfilled in their lives in general. The whole process is an empowering and enlightening one.
