Areas of hypnotherapy I deal with

Information about health conditions (*)

Hypnotherapy can enhance the well-being of individuals diagnosed with serious medical conditions, but should not take the place of medical treatment and advice. If you have been diagnosed with - or suspect you may have - any of these conditions, please speak to your doctor before starting hypnotherapy.

Other areas of hypnotherapy I deal with

I also work with people seeking growth-directed coaching, supporting both personal and, if appropriate, transpersonal development.

I'm an experienced hypnotherapy supervisor, and have worked with many varied therapists and counsellors experiencing issues in their practise.

If you can't see what you need help with listed above, please check my site (link below), or contact me. Thank you.

Hypnotherapy with Paul Thomas

I like to remind people that there's a lot more to hypno-therapy than mere conventional hypnosis. To the experienced therapist, all language is potentially 'hypnotic', and can quickly inspire or limit us; and some of the deepest trances are the stories we tell ourselves and the beliefs we allow ourselves to be guided by.

I work with presenting symptoms and issues wherever possible, but my overall approach is holistic and integrative, and may encompass:

  • suggestion hypnotherapy
  • person-centred free-association
  • hypnoanalysis
  • conversational hypnosis
  • humanistic and transpersonal coaching
  • psychotherapy and NLP techniques
  • affirmations and self-hypnosis
  • mindfulness and breathing exercises
  • creative visualisation

I usually begin therapy during the initial consultation...

What to expect of the initial consultation

I will usually have asked you a few questions about what it is that you want to work with, and what you want to achieve, via phone or email, upon your booking the first session. But I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear that, during the 90 minute initial consultation, I'll ask a few more questions.
Some will be purely for insurance purposes. For instance, as well as your own contact details, I'll need the name of your GP, and details of any medication you may have been prescribed. I'll also need to know about any psychiatric treatment or counselling you may have had in the past.
I'll ask you for a few details about your family and significant others, and I get everyone to give me some information about their childhood and their teen years, although there's often no need to explore any further than a basic outline.
Obviously, the main bulk of questions will concern the issue (or issues) for which you have come to see me; how long it's been a problem and what you would like to have happen. I'll also ask a few questions that are specially designed to give me an insight into what is likely to be the most appropriate therapeutic approach at this stage. I'll work with presenting symptoms where possible, and respect your personal goals.
Some clients need to talk more than others, and, as well as being useful in terms of information gathering, this can also be very therapeutic, when guided appropriately. I like to establish a warm, non-authoritarian and non-judgmental environment. Although I won't allow talking to take up session-time unnecessarily, there's usually an element of counselling during the first half of every session. Broadly 'humanistic' in my approach, I aim to provide the opportunity for self-awareness, self-realisation and personal growth.
Before I take you into hypnosis, I'll make sure you're comfortable and give you a chance to ask any questions you might have. By this time, I'll have an idea of the best way to proceed and how much we can expect to achieve straightaway. I'll teach you a simple self-hypnosis technique which you can use between sessions. We'll arrange a second session to suit you; usually sometime over the following fortnight.

Subsequent sessions

I tailor the subsequent sessions to individual needs. We'll start with a discussion about what has happened for you since the previous session. The way I work will vary greatly, depending on the presenting symptom, the apparent underlying causes, the personality-type of the client and what changes there have been since the previous session.
My approach can encompass person-centred, free-association; suggestion hypnotherapy; NLP techniques; or a more psychodynamic style, which may include hypnoanalysis.
By the third session, most people will have noticed some improvement, and in many cases things will already be a lot better, and we can usually assess, by this stage, how many further sessions, if any, you might expect to need.
