About me

A Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist with a private practice in Glastonbury, I have an Enhanced DBS certificate for working with vulnerable adults and children. With over thirty years experience in various forms of therapy, I combine Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, NLP, TNI and Mindfulness techniques as best suits each of my clients and their needs.

I specialise in helping people with issues around anxiety, depression, confidence, pain, phobias (such as fear of flying or dentists), addiction (including alcohol or smoking), weight loss, insomnia and panic attacks. I also run specialised Teen Issues course (see below) for teens and or their parents as well as a special Fast to Sleep course for people with chronic sleep issues. (see below). Visit my website to view the full range of therapies I offer.

My initial consultation is given free of charge. During this consultation, you will have the opportunity to express what you hope to achieve from therapy and I will explain the mechanisms behind your negative experiences and the way we are going to help you successfully overcome these and achieve your chosen goals. At the end of this session, you will take away a free stress reducing 50-minute hypnotherapy CD and a clear understanding of how this therapy is going to work for you so you can book your next appointment with confidence.
My initial consultation is thorough and involves
1. Finding out precisely what you want to achieve from therapy
2. In the case of specific phobias checking for possible trauma related to your symptoms.
3. Assessing your general underlying levels of anxiety and stress through direct measurement and the assessment of common behavioural and physiological symptoms.
4. Explaining the brain functions relating to your experiences and the means of altering these and maintaining lower levels of anxiety and reducing your stress related symptoms.
5. An explanation of the therapy methods we will be using to deal directly with your symptoms.
6. Instructions for activities for you to practice and other preparations for the therapy sessions.
7. Giving you a Hypnotherapy audio CD with instructions on how to use this.
8. Booking the next consultations.

Typically a phobia treatment requires three sessions in addition to the initial consultation. Depending on your levels of general anxiety a further session might be required. Generalised anxiety conditions, depression, IBS and addictions can require anything between 6 and 12 sessions depending on the individual and their circumstances.

My private practice is situated in the centre of Glastonbury, Somerset.
If travelling is a problem for you I am also happy to conduct further consultations via Skype.

I do offer discounts to students, pensioners and those in receipt of state benefits.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a powerful and well-proven form of therapy that encourages people to work towards their preferred future, focusing on how you want things to be. It does not require you to revisit painful experiences; instead, it can be effective in helping you reduce your experiences of stress, anxiety, depression and pain and support you in gaining clarity and direction and moving towards the future you desire for yourself. It is fast and effective therapy and can be used to good effect for all the areas listed below. You can find out more about the way I work on my website thenewmanpractice.co.uk.

Special short courses for teenagers and their parents.
Aristotle concluded more than 2,300 years ago that "the young are heated by Nature as drunken men by wine."
In a short 2 session course, designed to engage teenager and parent alike, I Explain the latest neuro-scientific understanding of teenagers’ developing brains and how natural evolutionary developments lie behind the difficulties and challenges of being a teenager (and living with one). Methods and techniques for reducing stress and anxiety appropriate for teenagers are also explained. The information in this course can be quite a revelation and opens up new understandings and opportunities for resolving conflicts and moving forward creatively. A Hypnotherapy CD is also included.

As we and they come to understand their "teenager" brains we can help teens to feel at ease with themselves and their experiences and to direct their energies in creative and rewarding ways.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a member of the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and registered with the National Council of Hypnotherapy, I follow their strict code of ethics and have full professional liability insurance.
I also have Enhanced DBS Certification to work with vulnerable children and adults.

I graduated as a qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist from The Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy Training school (CPHT) in Bristol, an accredited centre of excellence in hypnotherapy and psychotherapy in 2013. I have lately completed courses in Neuroscience with Dr Naeem Iqbal to compliment my own research into teenage brain development as well as Mindfulness training with Matthew Dyson.

Since studying Psychology at the University of Edinburgh in the 1980’s I spent a number of years working and training with the American psychologist Frank Natale, the founder of the Phoenix Center in New York and the originator of the popular TNI Relationships, Self Esteem, and Results courses.

Apart from regular hypnotherapy sessions I also offer special short courses designed for teenagers and or their parents - see at the bottom of this page: HELPING PARENTS AND TEENAGERS.

Further information

HELPING PARENTS AND TEENAGERS.
Over the last three years, I have researched and have a special interest in teenage mental health. This is an area where much important neurological and psychological research is being done at this time.

Reducing stress in the teenage years can have life changing, long term benefits (for the teenager and their family).

I offer a special 2 session course for parents of teenagers (12 - 24) which explains the associated behavioural changes and challenges and the brain science behind them in a positive way. It is an enlightening course designed to help parents understand what their teenagers are experiencing, how to help them and also feel less stressed themselves! When parents understand what is going on in their teenager's brain they can more confidently handle the inevitable teen crisis which previously caused them stress and grief. In addition, the hypnotherapy and relaxation tips help make this a really empowering opportunity to turn things around.

It is not unusual for teenagers to suffer from sleep problems, self-esteem and confidence issues, anxiety and depression at some time. These symptoms can seriously affect their education and while they may be temporary they can go on to form the foundation for long-term difficulties. Addressing them with the right therapy intervention can enhance their happiness and academic achievements as well as their productivity throughout their adult lives.

Fast to Sleep program
A special 2 consultation course focused on helping you personally towards good quality sleep.
It includes a thorough review of your sleeping problem and associated symptoms, a presentation about sleep, stress and the brain, a personalised sleep support program, a support guide and workbook as well as a Hypnotherapy CD / Download. There will also be a Hypnotherapy session as part of the second consultation. An optional follow-up sessions after 6 weeks is available for £30.
