Trim up for summer!
Although, as I write this, it is raining outside and has been now for many days, it is actually that time of year again, that's right, it's slim down for summer time. The rush to fill the empty spaces at your local weight watchers, slimming world and other similar clubs is well and truly on. Biscuit barrels are emptied and the fruit bowls dusted down, it's time to shed that winter coat. So why do we put ourselves through these gruelling eating and exercise rituals on a yearly basis? I hope to give you a brief overview of the reasons below.
Diets don't work! Well they do actually, to a degree, but only for a short term solution (or these habits would not need to be repeated). Diets get you there fast but not permanently, and surely, once you have managed the weight, it should stay off shouldn't it? How many people do you know, or perhaps you are one of them, that attends aforementioned slimming clubs on what seems an annual basis? Successfully meeting their target weight only to put it all back on once back from holiday (and in most cases while there). To me the word diet suggests only a temporary change in itself, a diet is a temporary change of eating habits and generally goes hand in hand with a few jogs when you feel guilty for eating that pudding with your Sunday lunch, I mean come on, who should feel guilty for having a treat? I actually really don't like the idea of a diet at all. The problem is when dieting the weight is reduced far too quickly meaning you are losing muscle rather than fat! When coming off your diet your fat cells are already there and off you go and give them an unintentional top up! Ideally you need to lose around 2Ibs per week to lose weight correctly. This will also give you a much higher chance of keeping the weight off forever.
Managing weight shouldn't be about calorie counting, special milkshakes and guilt trips when you have ate something not made of cardboard! Managing weight is about a whole lifestyle change, smaller portions, exercise (regular) and healthier food in general. If the new lifestyle is adhered to then there is no reason why you can't indulge from time to time (within reason of course) whilst maybe watching your favourite film, it's part of life, enjoy it! This is the reason why my weight clients remain happy, I don't believe in diets or self punishment, I don't ban any foods either. I help them make life changes!
Will power is fantastic and will be needed as even while seeing a hypnotherapist you will need to have your own will power, unfortunately though this is simply not enough, if it was enough then we would all be skinny, I wouldn't need to write this article and you wouldn't need to read it. The fact is we can change our conscious thinking all we like (this is done on diets) but if our subconscious doesn't agree then we are on a hiding to nothing. Our subconscious mind is responsible for 90% of our actions during the day, yes really, 90%, that's a staggering amount and brings to light just how much goes on in our brains all day without us even knowing. Have you ever had that car journey where you forgot to remember the route? Well how do you think you got there and how do you think you remembered to change gears? That was your subconscious, so imagine poor you trying to fight against preprogrammed actions towards food if you can't even pay attention in a car? What also doesn't help is that we are programmed to pick out high fat and high calorie food as back when we were cavemen we needed the highest calorie and highest fat food to make sure that we survived until our next meal as we didn't know when it was coming. Although we now have McDonald's and various takeaways in what seems like every other building, our brains still hold this prehistoric program.
This is where hypnotherapy comes into its own and the reason it is so effective when working with weight issues. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind and changes beliefs, perceptions and emotions to do with food and exercise and if needed can reduce cravings or banish them altogether! With your subconscious mind on board and driving your conscious decisions too you will be well on your way to successfully losing weight.
Just an end note, you may have noticed through this article I have not referred to dieting as weight loss but weight management, this is another trick to do with your subconscious. Throughout your life your subconscious has been programmed to find everyone you lose, your favourite toys, the tv remote, your homework as a youngster, even that item of clothing that your grandparents brought you that you purposely lost you had to go and find! Well guess what our subconscious is thinking when you lose your weight ? You guessed it, it's thinking hey, I have lost some weight, I better go and find it again, and to be safe this time I think I'm going to find a little bit more just incase I lose it again. So, when anybody asks you if you are losing weight, no you are not, you are managing it, reducing it or just plain getting rid.
