About me

I'm Karen, a UKCP Registered Trauma Therapist offering online therapy, having in private practice for over 24 years with those who have been struggling to value themselves, or who feel lonely or isolated in their life or struggle to develop intimate relationships; or who people please or have difficulties prioritising their needs; who have experienced infidelity or other kinds of losses of trust and betrayals, who experience difficulties with communication; who struggle to set boundaries and find balancing individual and couple relationships difficult; who are struggling with grief & loss, or anger, or anxiety or depression; who present with complex trauma or attachment issues rooted in childhood trauma.

I consider myself to be a trauma and relationship therapist and my main therapeutic approach is implementing EMDR treatment with other forms of Psychotherapy, including Hypnosis. I am trained to use hypnosis as an adjunct to an integrative approach to psychotherapy treatment.

If you find yourself stuck and at a standstill and want to explore the root of your issues through a combination of integrative approaches to help you gain more insight into patterns of unhealthy behaviours, addiction, unhealthy relationships, trauma/adverse life experiences, self sabotage, angry outburst, procrastination, imposter syndrome, self loathing and harshness to self, my job is to work alongside you to help you to work through maladaptive behaviours and discover who you can become.

In 1999 I qualified as a Rogerian Person Centred Therapist before training in Hypno/Psychotherapy in 2002.  I work with a variety of presenting issues and specialise in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,  Complex Trauma, Attachment Focused EMDR & healing Relational Trauma, as well as working with Relationship & Couples Therapy in a trauma informed way.

What online platforms do I use?

I mainly use Zoom and EMDR specific virtual platforms

Is Online therapy effective?

If you have not experienced online therapy before and wonder about its effectiveness, over the past few years I have discovered just how effective online therapy can be for many people presenting with a variety of issues. It is very focused work, working close up face to face on screen and can feel just as present as working face to face in person.

There may be occasions where I consider that online therapy is not suitable for your presenting issues and I would suggest a more appropriate onward referral.

Working online can have advantages over in person therapy face to face therapy. It can reduce inhibition as you work from the comfort and safety of your own home. It can allow you the flexibility to get on with your day without having to travel. You do however need to have a safe, private and confidential space to work from with good internet connection.

What kinds of issues do I deal with?

Whether you are attending for a single session, short term therapy to work through 'here and now’ issues, or whether your issue is deeply rooted and long-standing requiring longer term therapy, my aim is to facilitate you to make necessary changes to your life which relieve distress and help you live a better life.

It may be that you are wanting help to discover whether or not your relationship can be salvaged after an affair/betrayal of trust, or explore how you can recover from the grief and sadness of a relationship break up. You may be disturbed by childhood trauma or neglect, or suffer with panic attacks, stress or generalised anxiety. It may that you are suffering from a particular phobia or addictions and need help with this.

Whether you are reassessing your life right now and want to make some positive changes. Or whether you are feeling the stress of navigating yourself through unchartered waters and need help to gain more clarity.
Or you might be experiencing more longstanding or reoccurring concerns or negative behaviours and belief or ruminations. Together we can work towards exploring the things you want to change in your life and address any potential underlying blockages that are getting in the way.

Therapy provides an opportunity for you to reflect and explore your inner self and to work on accepting who you are and how to be your more authentic self. It can help to empower yourself to make better choices. Maybe you want to change repetitive patterns of behaviour or improve your mental state? Maybe you want to develop more confidence? Maybe you want to improve your relationship with others or to work on being more comfortable within your own skin?

How do I book online?

All booking are made in advance.

It would be helpful if you could send me a brief email outlining your main presenting issue(s) and I will respond as soon as I possibly can.

After I have received your email and your presenting issues appear to be suitable for working online, the next step would be to agree a date and time that works for both of us to meet for an initial consultation.  All you will need to is a laptop/PC or an iPhone with a camera and microphone and internet connection/WIFI and a safe and confidential place to work from.

My training?

I first trained to work online in 2006. I have been working exclusively online since March 2020. I have 20 years experience working with a diverse range of issues in person face to face.

I work with both individuals and couples offering individually tailored techniques that best promote growth, healing and understanding.

I am easy to talk with and will work at your pace in a calm and emphatic way.

As your therapist I aim to incorporate cultural sensitivity into the therapeutic work. My clients are diverse in race, culture and sexual orientation.

I am registered as a Hypno Psychotherapist with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

I am a fellow of the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy/The National Society of Talking Therapies.

I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, (BACP).

I am accredited with the EMDR UK as an Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing therapist. I am also an EMDR Europe Supervisor/Consultant which means that I am able to supervisee EMDR practitioners.

I am also trained in Brainspotting, a trauma psycho-therapeutic technique that helps you access unprocessed trauma in the subcoritcal brain.

I am a Relate Certified Relationship and Couples Therapist.

My aim when working with you?

I endeavour to offer a warm, relaxed, welcoming confidential space to help you explore and work through your main presenting issues.

I apply an integrative approach in terms of techniques depending upon your presenting issues, this can include using hypnosis as an adjunct.

Whilst adopting an integrative approach to my work, hypnosis can be applied as a distinct therapy for certain presenting issues such as smoking cessation, IBS, irritable bladder.

For more complex issues, such as an unhealthy relationship with food, addictions and other deeply rooted trauma related issues, I use Hypnosis informed techniques as an adjunct with other psycho-therapeutic modalities to best meet your treatment needs.

What happens in a first session?

The first session is important as it lays the groundwork for what we may be able to accomplish together. I identify whether you are on medication and other practical information. I explore your goals for therapy and identify what it might feel like if you could resolve your presenting issues and any blocking beliefs that could be holding you back, your fears, thoughts, beliefs, attitudes towards your dreams and goals, as well as other aspects of your life that may contribute to you being stuck or frustrated. I also engage in history taking to better understand what has happened to you that has led you into therapy.

We may discuss some internal obstacles that could undermine your progress such as low self confidence, poor body image, or low self esteem. We will identity how ysues affect your everyday life, your general happiness, whether you avoid taking on new challenges for fear of failure, whether you socially withdraw or procrastinate.

Q. How long have I been in private practice?

I have been working in private practice since 2000.

What is Hypno/Psychotherapy?

There is a difference between a Hypnotherapist and a Hypno-Psychotherapist. A Hypno-Psychotherapist, (as recognised by UKCP), is a therapist who has undertaken a minimum of 4 years training reaching Masters Degree level, which includes up to a minimum of 1800 hours training over four years.

Hypno-Psychotherapy in its purist terms, could still be brief therapy, yet tends to cut deeper, employing both hypnotic and psycho-therapeutic interventions in accordance to realistic treatment goals. This can mean that a brief therapy model may not always appropriate in helping you to fully resolve your issues. This can be especially relevant w relating to weight loss and addictions. The brief model can be more appropriate with issues such as smoking cessation or nail biting.

As such, Hypno-Psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy which uses hypnosis as an aid. It can be used to help psychological problems and conditions where bodily responses are closely linked to emotional states and to modifying behaviour, attitudes or emotions, These conditions may include eating disorders, sex addiction, stress, anxiety or irritable bowel pain among others.

Q. How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a psychological altered mental state resembling sleep. A person under hypnosis is considered to have heightened focus and concentration with the ability to concentrate intensely on a specific thought or memory whilst blocking of sources of distraction. During this state, positive suggestions for change can given to the subconscious mind to calm the mind, modify habits, to lessen anxiety, stress, physical pain or reduce high blood pressure. This is known as hypnotic induction. The use of hypnosis for therapeutic intervention is known as Hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy can be used to help a variety of issues and conditions for example, reduce stress, performance anxiety, to overcome exam fears, help pass your driving test and manage pain..
It can help you to overcome other dysfunctional habits, such as nail-biting, or distorted thought processes, including angry outbursts, road rage, or anger that is out of control and may be causing you to experience problems in your relationships with other people.

Q. Does Hypno/Psychotherapy work?

Although no therapist can ethically guarantee the successful outcome of any therapeutic approach, (as it is the client who processes and makes the changes), Hypno/psychotherapy can work for many people and so with your determination, motivation and capacity to change, there is no reason why your therapy would not for you too. Please feel free to check the NHS website to view their comments regarding the success of Hypnotherapy. http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/hypnotherapy/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Q. Why use an Hypno/Psychotherapist rather than a Hypnotherapist?

The advantage of working with a qualified Hypno/Psychotherapist is that it combines the skills and training of a Psychotherapist who also has additional training in hypnosis.

A Psychotherapist facilitates the focus and engagement of your conscious mind on the problem to help bring greater self awareness and understanding of your condition.

A Psychotherapist is trained in helping you explore more deeply your presenting issue to deal with troublesome habits along with a wide range of mental health disorders.

Hypnosis helps to engage the subconscious mind that harbour information. Psycho therapeutic intervention facilitates not only the development of your inner resources to help you become more self aware and to alter unwanted habits, or unbalanced attitudes and beliefs about yourself and the world we live in, it also helps you to explore your thoughts, feelings, mood and behaviours.

With this understanding in place, hypnosis is a psycho-therapeutic tool which allows you to to bypass your conscious defence system, by making suggestions to help you overcome unwanted habits or attitudes have usually become deeply embedded in your mind at an subconscious level. Everything that has ever happened to you that you remember using your five senses has been recorded and stored in your subconscious. Making appropriate suggestions to the sub-conscious mind is seen as helping you to improve mental health and well-being through the process of hypnosis.

Q. What happens in hypnosis?

Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a state of deep sleep. Instead, it induces an altered or natural state of relaxation through focused attention, reducing peripheral awareness yet still feeling in control at all times.

It is considered that hypnosis works by switching off the analytical left hand side of the brain, so that the non-analytical right hand side of the brain can become more alert. Whilst your mind is in an enhanced state of awareness, you will be concentrating entirely on the therapist's voice. In this state, the conscious mind is suppressed and the subconscious mind in revealed. When the mind is relaxed, this allows ideas, concepts, lifestyle adaptions and active thoughts or post hypnotic suggestions to be placed in your mind, i.e. the seeds towards positive change. These suggestions are specific to your needs and serve to help you to achieve the unique goals you formulated during the early stages of the therapy, and therefore create your desired change.

To summarise:-

Hypnosis:

This treatment used in hypnotherapy for a range of emotional and nervous disorders. Hypnosis creates a deeply relaxed state in which mental stress and bodily tensions are reduced. In this relaxed state, the mind is usually more open to the process of change. The client and therapist can work safely together, using an agreed approach, to enhance mental, physical and emotional well being.

Psychotherapy:

This is the application of psychological knowledge to treat individuals who are suffering from disorders of a psychological origin.

What else I am trained to offer you?

I offer a range of psycho-therapeutic interventions besides hypnosis and have a very well established background in psycho-therapeutic counselling, including Couple & Relationship and Psycho-Sexual Counselling.

I am also a trained EMDR Accredited Therapist/Europe Consultant, (UK & Ireland, 2012/2016) I am fully trained in Brainspotting, a trauma psycho-therapeutic treatment intervention.

I deal with a range of issues including:- trauma; stress; anxiety; anger management; pain management & preparation for labour; low mood & depression; low self-esteem/confidence; loss of direction, including career direction/life transitions; bereavement

My work around trauma includes many issues such as:- rape, road traffic accidents & accidents in the workplace; victims of crime and child sexual abuse, harassment, bullying, death of a child or other loved one, phobias, social anxiety, addictions/compulsions, pornography mis-use, nail-biting, weight loss, fear of wasps/spiders, snakes and others phobias, smoking cessation and IBS.

Q. What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing. It is a psycho/therapeutic procedure that originated during the '80's in the United States. It was originally designed to treat traumatic or dysfunctional memories and experiences, and their psychological consequences, but now is also used for a variety of symptoms including bullying, harassment, accidents, grief, anxiety, panic disorders, pain management and psycho sexual issues.

EMDR may be used as a stand alone treatment by itself, and/or or as an adjunct alongside "talking therapy" and/or hypnosis.

One unusual element in EMDR is bilateral stimulation, usually in the form of eye movements, or bilateral auditory or tactile stimulation. There is a great deal of evidence that bilateral stimulation speeds up the reprocessing of disturbing emotional or traumatic material, and at the same time helps you to feel safer in making contact with traumatic material.  A number of replicated research trials have demonstrated that eye movements reduce the vividness of emotional and traumatic imagery. It is believed that the eye movements induced in EMDR, mirror the natural eye movement process that occurs in the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phase of sleep, during which information is processed naturally.

An EMDR therapist will firstly carry out a careful psychological assessment of whether EMDR would be suitable for your presenting problem(s), and will elicit a memory representing the problem. You will be asked for a picture that represents the memory, a negative belief that you have about yourself in relation to the memory, and to notice associated physical sensations. Thereafter, a number of sets of eye movements or other bilateral stimulation are commenced, and after each set of eye movements the therapist will ask you what you have noticed. Typically, the images, emotions, and sensations experienced change through this process. At some point these changes become more positive and adaptive as you reprocess old dysfunctional information and connect with presently held adaptive and functional information. The aim is always to enable you to recollect the original traumatic material without disturbance, and to have new and more adaptive beliefs about themselves in relation to the experience.

With "simple" or "one off" traumas or experiences in adult life, EMDR can be remarkably rapid in its effects, and average treatment times for these kinds of problems are from 3 to 5 sessions. With more "complex" or multiple traumas, treatment can take much longer.

Many insurance providers that cover standard counselling & psychotherapy, also cover EMDR services. Please contact your insurance carrier for further information.

Q. What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a brain based psychotherapy that uses our field of vision to locate where in the brain trauma is stored. When we look to the left, centre, or to the right, the brain automatically locates where trauma is stored. It seems to access a part of the brain that is hidden from our conscious awareness. By holding attention on a brainspot, processing of that traumatic event is thought to flow through the nervous system naturally, locating what is unhealed and resolving it internally.

Q. How do I book an initial consultation?

When you attend the very first time, this is known as the “Initial Consultation”.

The best way to book an initial consultation is to send me an email via the Hypnotherapy Directory detailing some dates and times when you are available to attend. I will try to accommodate once if those best I can.

The cost of cost initial consultation and all subsequent sessions is £90 for a one hour session.

During the session we will explore your SMART goals and then history behind your presenting issues. This serves to formulate a unique approach to my work with you.

A formal contract will be discussed with you during the initial consultation, including information around confidentiality and cancellation policy.

How long will the sessions last?

The initial consultation and any subsequent sessions therapy lasts for 60 minutes. The exception to this is smoking cessation, which is one off session lasting 75 minute I total.

What happens in therapy?

Therapy sessions provide you with an opportunity to talk about your issues and what is concerning you most right now. It aims you to help you gain greater clarity and understanding of your issues and reprocess maladaptive thinking.

A range of modalities can be used dependant upon your unique needs. When integrating Hypnosis, usually this involves guided meditation, inductions/progressive relaxations, deepeners, visualisations, metaphors, powerful suggestions and other creative techniques to help bypass conscious awareness and speak directly with your unconscious mind.

Progress reviews take place at regular intervals. The aim is to provide you with a comfortable, safe, contained and confidential environment where you feel relaxed and able to discuss any issues that concern you.

I deal with a range of issues including weight management, anxiety, exam fears, nail-biting, career confidence building, raising low self esteem, stress reduction, overcoming depression, managing pain, relationship and sexual issues, fears/ phobias, panic attacks, abuse: physical, emotional and mental and smoking cessation.

Q Do you want to give up smoking?

Most most people prefer to attend a one hour initial consultation before we engage in the quit smoking hypnosis session(s).

Q. What are my code of Ethics

Hypno/Psychotherapists must adhere to a strict Code of Ethics and Practice.

I am a member of the:-

  • National Register of Hypnotherapists & Psychotherapists (NRHP)
  • Fellow of the National Council for Hypno/Psychotherapists, (NCHP, 2004); (FNCHP, 2011)
  • National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy (NCHP)
  • MBACP member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
  • Registered member of the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy (UKCP) (Hyp)

Q. How is my work supervised?

As part of working ethically within the Code of Ethics I have three separate supervisors.

Q. What led in to train as a Hypno/Psychotherapist?

During the late 1980's to mid 1990's I was employed as a p/t Lecturer in several Further & Higher Education teaching establishments where I taught Business & Management Studies, Leisure & Tourism & Sports Management. From this I developed an interest in working with some of the emotional needs of students. I think this is where the seed for entering into the psychotherapy and counselling arena first originated. I also believe that therapeutic counselling can be a psycho-educative process.

After qualifying as a person-centred counsellor I developed further interest in how client's presenting issue(s) can cause ripple effects within the family system and how this affects couples when their family systems merge. This created a further interest in my desire to train as a couple's therapist with Relate.

My background in psycho-dynamic theory has informed me of the importance of the subconscious and its interplay with our behaviours and habits. This interest has also encouraged me to train in hypno/Psychotherapy.

Q. What is my personal philosophy?

Warmth, respect, compassion, patience, empathy and appropriate challenge to aid personal awareness are running themes throughout my work. I encourage you to determine the direction of therapy, putting you at the centre of therapeutic encounter.

People generally seek out hypnosis and psychotherapy with a need to alleviate some current, on-going stressors, change behaviour and/or to address the root of a problem. The therapy will essentially assess where you are now in relation to what you want to achieve, formulate specific and realistic goals, and facilitate the process of you achieving these goals, finding a more satisfying pathway. The aim is to to put you (the client) in touch with yourself so that you can make the necessary changes towards realising your own power and potential. Therefore the therapist is responsible to and not for you.

Information about health conditions (*)

Hypnotherapy can enhance the well-being of individuals diagnosed with serious medical conditions, but should not take the place of medical treatment and advice. If you have been diagnosed with - or suspect you may have - any of these conditions, please speak to your doctor before starting hypnotherapy.

  • Dental Anxiety
  • Fear of driving
  • Fear of driving on motorways

  • Eating disorders
  • Addictions and co-dependency
  • Trauma/PTSD

Additional information

  • All sessions start with an Initial Consultation.
  • The cost of all initial consultations for individuals is £90 for up to 1 hour session. This is a history taking session which provides an opportunity to generate some understanding and explore further your presenting issue(s).
  • The working contract for single issues e.g. Nail-biting, IBS etc. is likely to be up to six sessions, with regular progress reviews in-between. More longer complex issues are likely to incur longer term therapy
  • After the initial consultation, all subsequent sessions cost £90 00 for up to 1 hour
  • Usually Smoking Cessation starts involve an initial consultation costing £90 for up to one hour, followed by an additional hypnosis session with a one off fee of £180.

Confidentiality and Cancellation POLICY

Confidentiality:-

I comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, 2018) relating to my clients notes and personal information.

The GDPR require that any data held electronically or handwritten are stored and transmitted safely and securely. These records are usually stored for three years after your final session.

I adhere to a strict code of ethics. The information you provide during the course of your therapy will remain in the strictest of confidence, unless in rare situations where there is concern for your safety or that of others, I may need to disclose certain confidential information in your best interest and/or that of others. I will however, endeavour to discuss any concerns I have with you directly and encourage you to seek appropriate assistance.

Further information around confidentiality and exemptions to confidentiality are discussed in the initial consultation

Cancellations:-

Cancellation policy is a model of working that sets clear boundaries and creates safety within the therapeutic relationship.

Implementing a late cancellation and no show fee is an important point in the broader scope of the work we do together.

Therapy, irrespective of modality, appears to be most helpful to those who see their therapy as a valuable and important component of their lives, recognising that cancelling, not attending or extending long intervals inbetween sessions without prior discussion, can negatively impact the therapeutic process.

Other than in an absolute emergency situation, I kindly ask that you provide up to 48 hours notice between Mon-Fri, 9 am to 5 pm, to cancel a session, even if you reschedule your session.

In circumstances where the notice is less than 48 hours during these stipulated times, you will be asked to pay in full for the missed session.

I will normally forward a paypal request for you to pay for the missed session prior to you attending next appointment.
