The aim of this CPD is to give a greater understanding of ADHD, the symptoms, the impact on neurotransmitters such as dopamine and how this can impact a client's ability to see or feel their three Ps.

There is a growing number of diagnoses for adult ADHD in this country. In addition to this, there are a number of people who suspect they have ADHD and are awaiting diagnosis. All are trying to understand and manage their symptoms, behaviours and adapt all of this into their daily lives. Most have spent a lifetime masking who they are due to stigma and not understanding their brains are different, they are neurodivergent.

This CPD will enable you to understand the guilt or shame a client can experience from reactions they may have received from family, friends, colleagues and employers for symptoms they never truly understood.

As therapists, we will be seeing more clients with ADHD, many of whom will have comorbidity of mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, addiction, PTSD and so on. Some may also present with physical conditions such as fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue.

Understanding this neurodivergent condition, how it impacts those with it, how it can make them behave and also the amazing skills and abilities that are also present in those with ADHD, will give you the knowledge and skills to help your clients find solutions to their needs, and manage their lives.

This CPD will cover:

  • The impact of a late diagnosis of ADHD and why diagnoses have been missed.
  • The three types of ADHD.
  • A brief explanation of the diagnosis process.
  • The lack of dopamine and epinephrine in those with ADHD and how this impacts the three Ps.
  • Emotional dysregulation and ADHD.
  • Comorbidity with illness and the impact of the late diagnosis.
  • The grief that can come with a late ADHD diagnosis.
  • How SFH can help those with ADHD, manage their three Ps, dis-regulated emotions and their comorbid conditions and illness.
  • Dealing with telling family, friends and managing stigma.
  • Understanding ADHD is a disability covered under the Disability Discrimination Act and Equalities Act.

About the presenter

Emma Jones qualified in July 2021 with CPHT gaining her HPD and DFSH. She works full-time as a hypnotherapist in her own practice in Essex, along with running anxiety workshops. She continues to work with police officers and groups that support them, which has included speaking at police exhibitions and delivering training to the Metropolitan and Wiltshire Police.

Prior to this, Emma spent over 10 years in the police as a detective working on domestic abuse, homicide and eventually specialising in sexual offences. These roles also involved being a family liaison officer to victims or their families in the cases of murder. As an officer, she also received training on the impact of trauma on officers and victims.

A note from Emma:

"I was diagnosed with ADHD myself in 2022 at the age of 44. I have since learned a great deal about ADHD, how to manage the symptoms and make them work for me. The diagnosis along with one of ASD which came at the same time, has actually led to me being able to truly understand who I am for the first time in my life.

"I want to help others with ADHD, I have a number of clients with ADHD some of whom have only been diagnosed because I recognised the symptoms within them, they have changed their lives as a result of this. Educating my colleagues and other therapists about ADHD will spread support for those living with it, some of whom may in later life only just be learning they have it and this is who they are."
