A therapist's guide to pain management
In this course, we will explore the neuroscience of pain and what tools we can use to support pain management.
We live in a chronic pain epidemic. Studies indicate that between 35% and 51% of the UK population experiences chronic pain.
In this course, we will explore how pain is generated in the brain, and how that gives us a unique opportunity to use our minds to modify the pain experience.
We will look at how mind-body tools can be used to support people living with pain, and what we know about the science of why they work.
On the workshop, you will learn:
- What is pain?
- How is the brain involved in generating pain signals?
- What does research tell us about how we can modify pain signals
- Hypnotherapy and pain – how can hypnotherapy help us with pain?
- Mindfulness and pain - how does mindfulness help with pain?
- What tools can we teach our clients that will help them manage their pain levels effectively?
- Pain and sleep
- Red flags and contraindications for working with pain - how and when to refer
- Understanding pain and trauma, and the emotional toll of chronic pain
- How to work with pain with empathy, compassion and understanding
About your Tutor: Deborah Bircham
Deborah Bircham DipCNM, UKIHCA-RHC, Dip.Hyp, mNCIP, mANP.
Deborah is the founder of Live Well with Chronic Illness, and specialises in holistic support for people living with long-term illness. She is a hypnotherapist, mindfulness teacher, naturopathic wellness coach, and integral eye movement therapy (IEMT) practitioner, and she combines health coaching with mindfulness and psychotherapy to support her clients to be as well as they can in mind and body. She works in ways that are neurodiversity and trauma-informed and has a particular interest in environmentally-acquired illness, and also in how we can support our physical well-being through self-care practices. She lives with chronic pain, MCAS, Dysautonomia and Lyme Disease, and uses her own lived experience of long-term illness to inform her work.
She is living proof that chronic illness needn’t prevent you from being able to lead a happy and meaningful life, and she supports people to connect with their inner wisdom to explore what that looks like for them.
