Stop smoking in 60 minutes with hypnosis

Kicking a smoking habit could in many ways prove a rather tough nut to crack. And that smoking is bad news for your health and your finances too makes it all the more baffling why a good number of individuals have clung to the nicotine stick for many years like some lifebuoy, puffing on a daily basis like some chimney. Smoking has been found to be culpable in a number of cancers. It also increases your susceptibility to heart attacks, strokes, lung disease and other health problems such as bone fractures and cataracts. Add all these to the staggering £60 a week that an average 20-sticks-a-day smoking habit costs, it becomes confounding how one can go out of their own way to subscribe to something that is obviously a non-starter, as is evident in the traction the habit has gained amongst a significant demographic.

Now, if nicotine lozenges, patches, chewing gum, counselling and other ‘stop-smoking’ therapies have seen you try and fail to kick the habit, don’t just dig in, shrug and subscribe to the ‘been-there-done-that’ resignation. Now may be good time to explore the benefits that lay in wait with hypnotherapy. And here’s how hypnosis works its magic.

Is smoking a physical addiction or a psychological habit?

Most smoking is done purely through habit or a conditioned response of some sort to certain stimuli. It is a psychological habit triggered by certain stimuli, not a physical addiction to nicotine. You kind of just go into auto-pilot and light up without really thinking because the habit has become an automatic response to certain triggers, most of which are psychological. Something happens, you feel a certain way and your next impulse is to grab a smoke. This chink in its armoury is actually why the condition can be helped.

Why hypnosis is effective

Hypnotherapy is known to be very effective in helping people stop smoking. And it also comes as a plus that while other methods will require you to put in some good time, a single hypnotherapy session lasting for just an hour can help you kick the habit. Hypnosis works so well at this for reasons that are not far-fetched. Smoking, like most other habits, is a function of the unconscious part of the mind. Hypnosis seeks to put you into the rapid eye movement (REM) state, which is nature’s optimal learning state. In the REM state, your deeper, unconscious mind is worked into a condition in which it is more open to new ideas and suggestions. This ‘reconfiguration’ of your unconscious mind simply takes away the urge to smoke and you find yourself no longer wanting to light a stick. Your unconscious mind that has hitherto been programmed (through years of repetition), with the wrong notion that smoking has positively filled an important void in one’s life, is brought into the realisation that there are better and healthier ways to achieve whatever it is that smoking may have been thought to offer.

Hypnosis helps your unconscious mind develop alternative behaviours which you will carry out automatically. In essence, your ‘quit-smoking-hypnosis-session’ serves to help you get to grips with reprogramming your unconscious mind to exude the same positive intentions that you believe smoking has bequeathed to you, but in far healthier and normal ways. Our bodies were never designed to be chimneys, so there is nothing normal about smoking.
