Do we always need to find the root cause of a problem?
One of the questions I’m often asked as a clinical hypnotherapist is, “Do I have to go back into my past to get better?” The answer is no, not always.
Many people make remarkable progress without ever needing to revisit old memories. Modern hypnotherapy offers many effective ways to reduce anxiety, build confidence and change unwanted behaviours while remaining firmly focused on the present and the future.
However, every now and then, a client’s journey reminds me just how extraordinary the human mind really is.
A case that challenged expectations
My client is a 63-year-old female. She has brought up three children who are happy and settled. She works in a very responsible role for the NHS. She is bright, funny, and extremely caring.
This lady had spent the last 38 years believing she couldn’t drive anywhere where she thought nobody would be around to help if something went wrong. Her anxiety became overwhelming, and she was experiencing frequent panic attacks.
Over nearly four decades, she had carefully planned routes, avoided certain roads and limited where she felt able to travel. Like so many people living with driving anxiety, she had gradually adapted her life around the problem.
Her family could not understand why she was unable to just hop in the car whenever she needed to. After all, before she got married she had ridden a motorbike all over Europe and flown to many places across the world!
She came to me because she was at her wits' end and wanted to make sure the remaining years of her life were free of this restricting belief.
Using journalling to uncover hidden patterns
Interestingly, we didn’t begin by using hypnosis at all. Instead, I asked her to complete some carefully guided journaling exercises between sessions. These exercises encouraged her unconscious mind to make connections that her conscious mind had never recognised before.
Eventually, something remarkable happened. She identified what I call the seeding incident – an early experience that had quietly shaped the way her mind viewed safety, danger and being alone.
The incident involved driving the car with her newborn baby in the back seat. She was tired and still recovering from a difficult birth. At one point during the journey, she couldn't remember where she was going or why she might be going there. She was in an area where she knew no one, and this caused an extreme panic attack.
Once that memory had been recognised, understood and processed, everything changed.
The outcome
Today she can drive wherever she wants, whenever she wants. Roads that had once filled her with dread have become just another part of everyday life. But that wasn’t the biggest surprise for her
For years she had also bitten her nails and picked at the skin around her fingers until it bled. These habits had resisted every attempt to stop them. Without directly treating either behaviour, both disappeared. It was as though her mind no longer needed them.
This is one of the reasons the human mind is endlessly fascinating. Sometimes what looks like several separate problems is actually one protective strategy created many years earlier. When the original reason for that strategy is resolved, other behaviours can naturally fall away because they are no longer serving a purpose.
Does finding the root cause always help?
No. Many issues can be resolved without ever searching for a root cause, and not every difficulty has a single identifiable starting point. Every client is unique, which is why therapy should always be tailored to the individual sitting in front of you. But occasionally, finding that missing piece of the puzzle creates changes that are far wider than anyone expected.
If you’ve been living with anxiety, a phobia, or habits that seem impossible to change, don’t assume you’ll always have to live that way. Sometimes the solution is very different from what you imagine, and sometimes your mind already knows exactly where the answer lies.
Clinical hypnotherapy can help people overcome anxiety, fears, phobias, unwanted habits and many other emotional challenges in a safe, supportive and professional environment.
