About me
Hi I'm Ian Murton and I specialise in helping people overcome driving anxiety using a structured, neuroscience-informed approach.
Driving anxiety is a learned, automatic response. It is not a reflection of your driving ability, but a subconscious pattern that can be changed.
Most people I work with are capable, confident individuals in other areas of life, but experience driving anxiety in specific situations such as motorways, roundabouts, junctions, or when they feel there is no easy way to stop. This can lead to panic, avoidance, and a loss of confidence behind the wheel.
Driving anxiety follows predictable patterns. Once those patterns are understood and addressed properly, the response can begin to change.
Because driving anxiety is driven by subconscious processes, surface-level techniques often provide only temporary relief. The focus of my work is to resolve the underlying cause rather than manage the symptoms.
I use the C.A.L.M.S Method, a structured hypnotherapy-based process designed specifically to resolve driving anxiety by retraining the subconscious patterns that trigger the fear response while driving. The aim is for driving to return to feeling calm, natural and unremarkable again.
My work is focused specifically on driving anxiety. Most clients come to me after trying other approaches without lasting success and are looking for a structured way to resolve the problem properly.
I am a registered hypnotherapist and a member of recognised professional bodies in the UK, including registration with the CNHC, the UK’s independent regulator for complementary healthcare practitioners.
Training, qualifications & experience
My Qualifications
- I have been awarded the Hypnotherapy in Practise Diploma (HPD).
- I am an approved therapist for Anxiety UK
Registrations with awarding bodies
- NCH - National Council for Hypnotherapy
- CNHC - Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council
What does this mean for you?
The HPD shows that I have completed a Hypnotherapy in Practise Diploma. This is considered to be the gold standard for hypnotherapists. In fact, it is estimated that less than 20% of practising hypnotherapists have this qualification. It takes roughly 120 hours of classroom learning and many hundreds of hours more studying and practising at home. I hope this gives you the confidence to know I have the knowledge to be able to help you, having received some of the very best training possible
The National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) and the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) are all professional bodies that I am a member of. Each has its own codes of conducts that I adhere to. You are only allowed to join each association if you hold a recognised qualification and are fully insured.
I hope this provides you with the confidence to move forward knowing that I am competent and knowledgeable about how to help you overcome your driving anxiety.

Member organisations
The National Council for Hypnotherapy holds one of the largest registers of independent Hypnotherapists in the United Kingdom and strives to maintain the highest standards among its members. There is an agreed Code of Conduct, an established Complaints & Disciplinary Procedure and all members are obliged to maintain comprehensive Public Liability & Professional Indemnity Insurance, maintain regular CPD (continuing professional development) hours, and attend Supervision when needed.
The CNHC encompasses many types of alternative therapy, including hypnotherapy.
In order to be admitted to the register a practitioner must have studied to the National Occupational Standards for that profession/discipline, or have reached the equivalent of the National Occupational Standards through other relevant training or at least three years of experience and been assessed by their peers.
A practitioner must also have professional insurance and agree to abide by the CNHC Code of Conduct, Performance and Ethics.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

info Information about health conditions (*)
Hypnotherapy can enhance the well-being of individuals diagnosed with serious medical conditions, but should not take the place of medical treatment and advice. If you have been diagnosed with - or suspect you may have - any of these conditions, please speak to your doctor before starting hypnotherapy.

Further information
Sessions are delivered online, allowing me to work with clients across the UK and internationally.
The work is structured but tailored to the individual. Most clients are capable, busy professionals who are used to functioning well in other areas of life, but find that driving anxiety has begun to limit their freedom, whether that is avoiding motorways, planning routes carefully, or feeling restricted in day-to-day travel.
The focus is on resolving driving anxiety at the level of the subconscious pattern, rather than relying on coping strategies. This allows for a more stable and lasting change in how driving feels.
