About me

Hello.  Is there something that you feel is holding you back in your ability to live your life as fully as possible? Do you recognise certain unhelpful patterns of behaviour in your life that have led you to feel 'stuck'? Are you fed up of the mental chatter of 'negative self-talk' and want to find a way through it?

The good news is that you are not alone.  This is all part of the experience of being a human being.  Our minds have an evolutionary bias towards the negative.  However, the even better news is that, with practice and effort, we are able to bring about positive changes, dismantle negative cycles and enable ourselves to live richer and more fulfilling lives

I'm Neil. I am a cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist with a special interest in helping people with anxiety. I have a therapy practice based in the heart of Norwich's historical centre. My approach incorporates an integration of evidence-based techniques: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and hypnotherapy. I offer confidential bespoke therapy sessions focused specifically to help you achieve the goals that we agree on together.

I strongly believe in the importance of a collaborative approach between therapist and client. I can help you using a variety of techniques to initiate behaviour change, boost confidence, increase performance, reduce anxiety and manage stress.  All of the techniques I use have a solid basis in research and have been proven in their effectiveness.  A key part of sessions is helping clients understand how and why these processes work. I always spend time ensuring that my clients are fully-informed about hypnosis and I take time to deal with the many misconceptions that are prevalent on this subject.  One of the key things I want clients to understand is how 'all hypnosis is self-hypnosis' and that they are the key component in the process.  Hypnosis is not something that is 'done' to them.

At our initial session, I would ask lots of questions to clarify the issue you want help with and explore patterns of thoughts, emotions and behaviour. I would want to find out where and when you experience these issues and explore triggers, coping behaviours and support.  During this initial session, I would want us to agree to some SMART goals.  These will then be very useful as we can measure progress towards them over time.  Between sessions I will often give you 'homework' to consolidate what we have covered in the session.  This may include recordings to practice relaxation, thought-diffusion or self-hypnosis.  This 'homework' may also include the collection of 'data' such as behavioural experiments or keeping a diary of thoughts and feelings. Subsequent sessions would then usually begin with a review of these tasks.

I also offer interactive workshops for groups and organisations that want to improve stress-management and build resilience across their workforce.

I trained with the UK College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, the only UK organisation that provides hypnotherapy training approved by the British Psychological Society because of its solid basis in research and evidence.

If you would like to discuss how I could help you, please get in touch via phone or email.  We can then arrange a mutually convenient time for a free 20 minute chat to further discuss how we could work together. This is a great opportunity to ask me any questions without any commitment.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy from the UK College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, the only UK organisation that provides hypnotherapy training that is approved by the British Psychological Society because of its solid basis in research and evidence.

Before training as a therapist, I spent two decades working in education. My personal experience of working in a highly-stressed environment led me to become more interested in my own mental health and that of my colleagues, the students and the community we served. This led to a fascination with psychology, stress, meditation, hypnosis and CBT.

GHR
The General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR)

Hypnotherapists may become members of the General Hypnotherapy Register if they satisfy certain criteria with regard to both training and ongoing requirements as determined from time to time by the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC).

Members are either registered at Practitioner status (which confirms that the GHR acknowledges their qualification to practice), or Affiliate status. Although Affiliate level registrants will have completed a sufficient number of training hours to equip them to commence seeing clients on a limited basis, the GHR does not acknowledge them to have yet been trained to full practitioner level.

All GHR Registered Practitioners are required to accept the published Code of Ethics and Complaints & Disciplinary Procedure.
