Yo-yo dieting, why does this happen?

Diets, fad diets, special diets, the latest quick fix! I am sure you have all read about them, you might have even tried some of them or at least know someone that has.

Do they work?

I’m sorry to tell you but most of them, unfortunately do not work. Or they might work for a short time but as soon as you stop or actually start eating normally again, the weight just piles back on (sometimes even more weight than you actually lost in the first place).

Well let’s face it; if they actually worked they wouldn’t make so much money out of you.

I regularly see clients who tell me they have tried every diet going or they are constantly on some kind of a diet. Some people refer to this as yo-yo dieting.

Why does this continue to happen?

Well unfortunately most diets, clubs and fads don’t address the real reasons for weight gain which can often be emotional issues or self-sabotage.

Quite often clients will tell me they have no will power, no motivation or that they are addicted to certain foods.

The real reason is usually so much simpler; it’s a little like a switch in your mind that is pressed on every time you mention the word 'diet'

Why is this?

Well it’s a little bit like word association, when you tell yourself that you are going on a diet or you will start your diet on Monday you have actually already potentially set yourself up to fail.

Why?

Because in the past every diet you have ever tried you have eventually failed at, or been bored, or hungry. You are also likely to be constantly thinking about food from the moment you wake up. (What can I have for breakfast/lunch/dinner) it’s almost like you are planting the word 'food' in your head! This would be like a smoker who wants to give up walking around with a packet of cigarettes in their pocket. Making it so much harder for you to take control and achieve success.

Hypnotherapy

When you work with a good hypnotherapist, they will be able to discover your personal reasons for your weight gain and identify any underlying limiting beliefs that might be stopping you from achieving success. This will help you to feel so much more confident, have so much more willpower and self-belief and achieve and maintain your weight loss goals.
