Weight-loss and hypnosis

Before we look at how our mind can be used to change dress size and lose weight, we will consider what happens in the brain, when we engage in a habit and then try to break it. In the 1970s and 80s, new technology totally changed our understanding of the brain, how it works and how it supports our beliefs and habits. It was discovered that the brain is not a static organ that degenerates in time. Hypnosis is a tool that can be used to affect the way the brain and the mind process information. This can lead to a change in behaviour.

How the brain helps us to learn new habits

Remember when you first learned how to drive a car. Remember how you had to concentrate so hard. Each time you used the clutch or pressed the brake you were conscious of how much pressure your foot was exerting. But by the time you had enough practice, it became second nature and you no longer needed to concentrate so much. The habit had become ingrained and automatic.

When we learn a new skill, specific parts of the brain come into play. The cells (neurons) work together to help us. Practice reinforces the circuits in our brain. That’s why it is said that practice makes perfect. By sheer repetition we create a well-trodden pathway in our brain and the more we ‘walk down this pathway’ the easier it becomes to repeat the behaviour.

The dangers of being overweight

Losing weight does not simply have cosmetic advantages, it could literally save our life. Research shows that being overweight makes us susceptible to many modern diseases:

  • Diabetes.
  • Heart disease.
  • Some types of cancer.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Arthritis.
  • Indigestion.
  • Gallstones.

It works

Several studies highlight the effectiveness of mind training to help clients lose weight. There was much research done in the 1990s to suggest that working with the mind and hypnosis can definitely aid in weight-loss. Willpower alone won’t work. When the mind is in on the act, then strict diets are not necessary. It becomes easier to choose the right foods without feeling deprived. In fact even if you have the odd ‘cheat day’ when you eat your favourite foods, you can still lose unwanted weight if your mind is in the right place. Hypnosis helps to change our mind for the better.
