What is Emotional Freedom Technique?

Emotional Freedom Technique, often referred to as EFT or tapping, is a holistic healing method that combines elements of cognitive therapy and exposure therapy with acupressure. Developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s, EFT involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on negative emotions or physical sensations.
This process helps to release emotional blockages and restore balance to the body's energy system.

How does EFT work?

EFT operates on the premise that negative emotions and physical issues are linked to disruptions in the body's energy flow. By tapping on meridian points, similar to those used in acupuncture, while acknowledging and verbalising the issue at hand, individuals can release these disruptions. The sequence typically involves:

  • Identifying the issue: Focus on a specific problem, whether it’s a traumatic memory, anxiety, or physical pain.
  • Rating the intensity: On a scale of 0 to 10, rate the intensity of the emotion or pain associated with the issue.
  • The setup statement: Create a statement that acknowledges the problem and accepts oneself despite it (e.g. "Even though I have this anxiety, I deeply and completely accept myself").
  • Tapping sequence: Tap on the meridian points while repeating a reminder phrase (e.g., "This anxiety"). Common points include the top of the head, eyebrows, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone, and under the arm.
  • Reassessment: After completing the tapping sequence, rate the intensity of the issue again to gauge progress.

The benefits of EFT

EFT offers a range of benefits for mental and emotional health, making it a valuable tool in therapy:

  • Reduces anxiety and stress: Tapping can significantly lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone, helping to alleviate anxiety and promote relaxation.
  • Alleviates pain: By addressing the emotional root of physical pain, EFT can reduce or eliminate chronic pain conditions.
  • Improves emotional regulation: EFT helps individuals process and manage their emotions more effectively, leading to greater emotional stability.
  • Enhances self-acceptance: The setup statement in EFT fosters a sense of self-acceptance and compassion, crucial for healing.
  • Quick and accessible: EFT is a simple technique that can be practised anywhere, making it a convenient tool for ongoing self-care.
