Ten tips for achieving your goals

Whatever it is you want to gain, lose, acquire or cultivate, this article is for you - it is your essential travel guide to success. Use it as a road map for your journey of change and transformation.
1) Your destination: Get clear about what you want and where you want to be
It sounds obvious, but working out where you want to be is absolutely key to a successful journey. It’s vital that you describe your destination in super-positive language, as doing this sets your brain’s satnav. The clearer, brighter, sharper and more refined your destination is, the easier you make it for your brain to support you in your journey. Most people when trying to think about what they want, routinely say what they don’t want “I don’t want to be overweight, addicted, anxious, depressed, indecisive…” and so on. The danger with this is that it wakes up your brain to unwanted destinations and causes confusion! What would happen if you treated your car’s satnav this way – typing in the destinations you didn’t want? Where would you end up?
2) Practise time travel and preview your future
Fire up your navigation system by time travelling. Imagine having already arrived at your destination. Set aside some time to close your eyes and imagine being in that place – notice the sights, the sounds, the feelings, the smells and even the taste of being there. Think you can’t do this? If you are like most people, then you’re already excellent at time travelling to a negative version of the future – it’s called worrying and being anxious!
3) Navigational equipment: Be aware of your brain’s potential
Did you know that you carry with you 24-7 the most complex and creative piece of equipment in the known universe? Your brain is highly flexible and designed to support change, growth and development – of skills, thinking, feeling and behaving – at any age. The technical term for this is neuroplasticity. It really is possible to teach the metaphorical old dog new tricks, but you need to know how to do it. Make sure your journey of change includes fun, excitement and joy so your brain is switched on for learning and change. To achieve this, recruit an experienced and effective travel guide.
4) Seek out a travel guide
Having an experienced, wise, skilled and compassionate guide (i.e. a hypnotherapist) will make all the difference to whether or not you stay on track and arrive at your destination. Choose someone you feel comfortable with and who has the necessary skills and experience to help you. 5) The first step: Decide what it is and start walking!
So you’ve identified and previewed the destination, you’ve got your travel guide and navigational equipment on board. The next part is over to you - taking that first small, but significant step on the journey. 6) The journey: Break it down into smaller parts
Does the journey seem daunting, long, arduous, even impossible? The solution is simple – remembering that each journey progresses just one step at a time. What if you were to break the journey down into smaller chunks – how would that be? Have you noticed that you’ve already achieved so much in your life using this strategy? Think of where you are in your life now – and the chances are there were many small steps that led you to this place.
7) Identify the pitfalls, blocks and barriers
Knowing yourself better than anyone else, name those areas where you know you may trip yourself up. Once you’ve revealed these, you and your guide can work on a plan to keep you on track. Sounds too simple? Take it for a test drive and see!
8) Travel fatigue: Recognise your inner battles are part history and part habit
There will be times when the journey will be tough going. This is where your therapist will be invaluable. Remember that the things you struggle with probably have their roots way back in your younger years, when you experienced something difficult, perplexing and undeserved.
