Overcoming procrastination with Rapid Transformational Therapy®

Procrastination is often misunderstood as mere laziness or a lack of willpower. We picture someone sprawled on the couch, binge-watching Netflix instead of tackling important tasks. However, procrastination can wear many masks, and one of its most deceptive forms is what psychologists call 'active procrastination'.

Active procrastination occurs when we busy ourselves with less important tasks to avoid confronting more significant, often challenging responsibilities. It's the art of feeling productive while skillfully sidestepping what truly matters. This form of procrastination can be particularly insidious because it allows us to maintain the illusion of productivity while neglecting our most important goals.

During my own journey to become a therapist, I fell into this trap. My house had never been cleaner, my drawers were meticulously organised, and I prided myself on my ability to tackle these household chores efficiently. Yet, deep down, I knew I was making excuses to avoid focusing on what I truly wanted – my therapeutic training.

It took some serious self-reflection to realise that my active procrastination stemmed from deeper issues. At its core was a gnawing sense of inadequacy and a paralysing fear of failure.

The thought of fully committing to my studies and potentially falling short was far more daunting than the certainty of a well-organised sock drawer.

This realisation was a turning point. By acknowledging these underlying fears, I could begin to address them head-on. Through self-work and, ironically, the therapeutic techniques I was learning, I started to build my self-confidence and challenge my fear of failure.

This personal experience has given me a deep understanding of and empathy for my clients who struggle with procrastination. I recognise the complex emotions and beliefs that underlie their behaviour, and I feel privileged to work alongside them in overcoming these challenges.

How can Rapid Transformational Therapy® (RTT) help?

RTT is a powerful tool that goes beyond surface-level symptoms to address the root cause of why clients procrastinate. By utilising hypnosis and other therapeutic techniques, RTT allows us to access the subconscious mind where these limiting beliefs and behaviours originate.

Overcoming active procrastination requires more than just better time management or increased willpower. It demands honest self-reflection and a willingness to confront our deepest insecurities. For many, RTT can be an invaluable tool in this process, helping to uncover and reframe the subconscious beliefs that fuel procrastination.

As we work to overcome our procrastination tendencies, it's helpful to remember the parable of the buffalo and cows in Colorado during a storm. When a storm approaches the Rocky Mountains, cows tend to run away from it, prolonging their discomfort as they eventually become exhausted and still end up caught in the storm. Buffalo, on the other hand, charge directly into the storm, passing through it quickly and minimising their exposure.

This natural phenomenon serves as a powerful metaphor for dealing with our challenges. When we actively procrastinate, we're behaving like the cows, running from the storm of our responsibilities and fears. By doing so, we prolong our anxiety and, ultimately, still have to face what we've been avoiding.

Instead, we can choose to be like the buffalo. By confronting our fears and important tasks head-on, we may experience short-term discomfort, but we'll move through our challenges more quickly and with greater success.

Overcoming procrastination, especially its active form, is not about shaming ourselves for our cleaning sprees or organisational binges. Rather, it's about recognising these behaviours for what they are – coping mechanisms that ultimately hold us back from our true potential. By acknowledging our fears, addressing our sense of self-worth, and choosing to charge headfirst into our challenges, we can break free from the cycle of procrastination and truly embrace the path to our goals.
