Depression and hypnosis

Firstly, in order for you to decide whether or not you are depressed and what you can do about it, you first have to understand what depression is. If you find that you feel overwhelmed by sadness for long periods of time, it may be time to seek appropriate medical advice before starting any course of therapy.

Types of depression and common symptoms

Depression is classified into different types. The most common type is major depression, also known as clinical depression. Other types are known as chronic depression or dysthymia, atypical depression and manic depression. Each depression type has its own identifiable symptoms, however the most common symptoms to watch out for are:

  • Low self-esteem/image
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Overwhelming sadness every day
  • Trouble getting out of bed
  • Manic/Bipolar behaviour.

Depending on the severity of depression, many options are available to help deal with the types of depression and its unique symptoms. Hypnosis is one such method, commonly used together with therapy and counselling. Hypnosis, also known as hypnotherapy, is used as a guided focus of attention that aids the person to focus on specific thoughts in a heightened state of awareness. It also helps the person to perceive situations differently, such as grief associated with the loss of a loved one.

The therapist will be able to help the person focus his or her attention on something they have chosen to ignore or not deal with. This focus is called a trance. Once a person is in this trance, their attention is guided to be aware of the memory and completely remove themselves from anything in their external surroundings.

Trained therapists may use two different methods:

Analysis

This method is used to reveal or find a significant emotional event related to the problem. The therapist will make the person relaxed and in an intense state of concentration. The goal will be to make the person pinpoint a traumatic event that they have blocked out in their unconscious memory. Once the memory has been discovered, it will be addressed during therapy.

Suggestion Therapy

This is a method that encourages the person to identify certain things in their memory they have neglected, or are in denial of, through suggestion. This method helps them overcome an addiction or habit by changing perceptions.

Hypnosis can help to improve many of the conditions associated with depression. Some of the success rates of hypnosis for the following conditions are:

  • Anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress
  • Phobias
  • Grief
  • Sleep disorders
  • Stress.

It is important to remember that hypnosis is not a mind control medium. It is less invasive than traditional and more established practices. Hypnotherapy must be performed by a licensed or certified professional, specifically trained in hypnosis.
