Help for comfort-eating and over-eating with hypnotherapy
Comfort eating is a common way to numb or manipulate our feelings. It doesn’t have to be when we are feeling down or stressed. Often people report comfort or over-eating as a response to boredom, a ‘high’ feeling, as a celebration when something good has happened or just ‘something to do’.
There’s a reason why we comfort and/or overeat and that reason can’t be put right by addressing it with food. Some people automatically think that food is the right way of addressing comfort or over-eating, it seems quite logical. They think things such as, "If only I could stop eating junk food" or "If only I had loads of willpower". Unfortunately, it isn’t about the food at all, it’s about the underlying reasons driving the compulsion to overeat.
So how do we deal with that?
Hypnotherapy is a great tool for getting to the real reasons of why we have this unwanted behaviour. In most cases, the underlying cause is a mistaken belief about ourselves (which we’ve picked up in the past). This may be things such as, "I don’t believe I can lose weight and maintain a healthy body weight", "I’m lazy", "I’m unlovable" or "I will always comfort eat". These beliefs run our behaviours in the present, causing us (through learnt behaviour and repetition) to deal with emotions in an unhealthy way; eating to distract ourselves from the problem.
It is quite common to offer a child food to cheer them up or distract them from crying over a grazed knee. It is a very socially accepted thing to do. This means that many of us grow up with the habit of using food as a bit of a ‘sticky plaster’ to make us feel better or distract us from certain things. The great thing about this is, these beliefs can be changed!
Using hypnotherapy, we can get to the underlying habit and help to re-programme the mind to adopt a new, healthy belief about how to manage emotions and not have to rely on food. If you are tired of yo-yo dieting, it may be a good time to explore hypnotherapy, learn what is actually driving the behaviour once and for all and adopt a healthier perspective on food.
