Exploding head syndrome
This condition is actually part of the "parasomnia" syndromes- meaning an abnormal event caused by the nervous system that happens just before or during sleep.
The condition causes a loud "bang/explosion" sound inside the head of the sufferer, sometimes accompanied with a physical jerk and bright light at the same time, sometimes even pain - although this is less common.
This is something that would be incredibly scary and anxiety-inducing, sometimes making the sufferer believe that they have suffered a stroke adding to the stress surrounding the occurrences. There is little known about the cause, but it has been noted that symptoms worsen when the sufferer is over-stressed or tired.
How hypnotherapy can help: Just like with pain, hypnotic suggestions can alter the perception of the event, perhaps using a "control panel" in your mind using a switch to "turn off" the occurrences. Or A dial to "turn down" the noise it makes- whichever the client is more happy with.
Because the events are linked with stress and tiredness relaxation techniques will greatly reduce the triggers leading to less and less occurrences. Calm anchors applied just before sleep will take your mind to a deeply relaxed state bypassing the "in-between state" of sleep again reducing the chance of occurrence.
If you experience these occurrences you will need to be checked by your GP and a sleep specialist. There is, however, no reason not to seek a hypnotherapist for relaxation purposes in the mean time as it will enhance your life in many ways in its own right.
