Does a forthcoming general election make you feel more anxious?
Anxiety is a state of heightened response (fight, flight or freeze) characterised by an increase in adrenaline and other stress hormones. You may already wake in a heightened state or you may respond to threats producing this fight, flight or freeze response. In this state, you are more likely to see things as a threat and produce more adrenaline and stress hormones. Whether you start in a heightened state which produces negative thoughts or think yourself into the state, the end result can be anxiety.
In this state, it is human nature to try to think your way out of the problem but you are already primed to see things negatively. Even if you try to think positively, you may not really believe yourself at a subconscious level. In this heightened state, you are much more likely to imagine catastrophe than if you are calm.
With a forthcoming general election, you may feel that things could change, that your job or financial security may be at risk. What can you do about this?
The answer is not intuitive - not to focus on the issue too much, but to focus on the things that you can change:
- Adrenaline affects you physically - exercise can help your body reduce adrenaline levels. Even a moderate walk can help greatly. Swimming is great for people with limited mobility.
- Get enough sleep - fatigue alone can cause anxiety so eliminate it as a cause. Everyone can learn to sleep well at night. Practice good sleep hygiene. Insomnia is not something you need to put up with for any length of time. Develop an attitude of gratitude. People who are grateful for their lives generally sleep better. People who pray and thank a higher authority for all that they have, are practicing gratitude. It is a useful exercise for clients to write a list of 100 things that they are grateful for. At first it is a tough exercise for most, but it is possible to feel grateful for almost everything. If you continue to have sleep issues it is worth considering intervention. Hypnotherapy can help.
- Eat healthily - avoiding sugar and surges in blood sugar levels, avoid or greatly reduce alcohol intake and get a balance of nutrients to help keep you healthy.
- Visit a hypnotherapist and or practice any of the following - mindfulness, yoga, self-hypnosis, EFT (emotional freedom technique), progressive muscle relaxation or something similar. These are all proven to manage and reduce anxiety and stress.
- Connect with nature – this can really help restore perspective and balance.
- Ensure that your life is balanced as much as possible. Many people that get anxious take things out of their lives because they are not coping or feel stressed. Activities such as socialising, making a contribution to society, spending time fostering good relationships with your family, all have a hugely positive effect on your well-being. You may look at this list in your anxious state of mind and rationalise that is just isn’t possible for you to change enough to make a big difference. That’s where hypnotherapy can be a huge help - it can help you to see things from a different perspective and give you imagery to help strip away the anxiety.
