Do you want to feel happier?
Lots of people go to a hypnotherapist and say that the thing they want most is to feel happy.
At first that might seem like a reasonable request as we all like to feel happy. However, we can’t feel happy all the time because modern life is complex and demanding. Nevertheless life does need to be in balance. It would be impossible to understand happiness of self and others if we were happy all the time.
The same applies for sadness. If you are feeling sad, have low mood or have negative thoughts then it’s time to change and get back that balance. CBT Hypnotherapy combines counselling skills with hypnotherapy to help you change those negative thoughts.
According to Carl Jung, (a Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist), ‘…the word ‘happy’ would lose its meaning if it wasn’t balanced by sadness.’
Martin Seligman, a pioneer of positive psychology believes that there are three aspects of happiness that relate to needs, strengths and fulfilment -
- The pleasant life.
- The good life.
- The meaningful life.
Improving happiness is about understanding our values, beliefs and strengths, as well as looking to the future. Ultimately, it’s about considering that balance of emotions because too much sadness can lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.
Yet this request to feel happier provides challenges to the hypnotherapist because it’s too vague. That’s because it’s difficult to measure happiness and know that the client has been successful in meeting their needs. Being more specific about what you want with your hypnotherapist will help you to get your desired outcome. For example, you might say ‘I want to feel happier at work as I want to build my confidence and feel good about giving a presentation’.
Hypnotherapy can help you to feel happier. It may involve dealing with past issues or acceptance with regression, or it may help you to acknowledge, plan and access your strengths and abilities through positive suggestion. Perhaps you need to relax, change a habit or combat a fear to feel happier. Some hypnotherapists will guide you to access your happy memories from a safe, special place that you experienced good feelings from before.
Hypnotherapy can also help you to develop hope by guiding you to change negative self-talk to positive talk, develop goals, make decisions and look optimistically to the future. Learning self-hypnosis will empower you to continue to feel better.
The subconscious mind has the answers to your sadness, as it already knows your strengths, your values and your abilities to learn and develop the life that you want. Hypnotherapy provides an opportunity for that to happen.
