Are you practising being helpless without knowing it?
Consciously or unconsciously, have you picked up patterns of behaviour called 'learned helplessness'?
'Learned helplessness' in Psychology is defined as a mental state in which an organism forced to bear aversive stimuli (i.e. stimuli that are painful or otherwise unpleasant) becomes unable or unwilling to avoid subsequent encounters with those stimuli, even if they are 'escapable.'
Learned helplessness can occur in instances where subconscious beliefs are formed at a young age, such as in the following examples:
- When you wished you could've been bigger to fight off the bully in the playground, but you couldn't because you were only a child.
- When you wished you had more money so that your mum and dad wouldn't argue so much, but you couldn't because you were too small to earn money.
If you still hold on to experiences of learned helplessness, you will unwittingly suffer and experience that in your health, wealth, happiness and success, regardless of how uncomfortable it is to experience and how much you desire to change.
The effect of this might look like:
- Weight challenges
- Feeling victimised
- Persistent money worries
- Lack of money
- Arguments in your own relationships about money.
These may all be linked to learned helplessness picked up at some point in your formative years, which then forms a subconscious belief that defines your reality today.
