What is an addiction?

An addiction is a dependency on something, which rather than being something you use or do every now and again, is something you depend on to get you through the day or the weekend. Here's the thing - you weren't born with your addiction, it's something you learnt when you were younger that helped you to feel good, and that's something we all want to do when we find ourselves in tricky times.

Addictive behaviours are very powerful tricks that the mind plays on you which can lead you to believe that you have no choice in those difficult moments but to resort to the very thing that actually is causing you more problems. That temporary relief can very quickly turn to embarrassment, guilt and shame which makes you feel even worse and make you want to do the addictive behaviour even more. It can be a vicious cycle that can seem impossible to escape; a battle between yourselves - the part that wants to stop and the part that keeps driving you to continue the habit.

It's like a part of you is stuck in the past, doing something that doesn't suit you as a mature adult and the task of hypnotherapy is to mature all parts of you at play in your addiction so you can take back control of your life as the adult you are.

You cannot change the past, but you can change how it affects you today and into the future. You may well have had a lot of therapy and know everything about your addiction, but still do it. Awareness is really useful but knowledge by itself doesn't result in change for many people. Learning how to deal with stress, anxiety, boredom as well finding pleasure and comfort in in healthier places is a very important part of overcoming addictions.

Hypnotherapy has the edge on other approaches as you are dealing with the unconscious mind which drives 95% of our behaviour. At an evolutionary level all behaviour serves a purpose - to take us towards pleasure and away from pain. These connections have been cross wired when you have an addiction and need reconfiguring which requires more than just conscious effort or willpower!
