About me

My name is Rita Lavis.  I appreciate the benefits of hypnotherapy, it helped me to stop smoking years ago.  I am excited and passionate about hypnotherapy, having seen its many benefits come to fruition.  Stress, anxiety, depression are common features in day to day lives.  Mostly we can overcome and combat these with our own strategies, however, when our coping skills and strategies have dried up it can then become overwhelming.  I work with a Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH) approach, which combines Cognitive and Behavioural Techniques with hypnosis. CBH is at the forefront of modern clinical hypnotherapy practice and uses only scientifically validated techniques. It is easy to become wrapped up in our habitual thought patterns without a full awareness of how unhelpful they are. CBH identifies these patterns and aims to restructure them. Clinical trials show that hypnotherapy is effective in reducing pain, anxiety and the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention. In this relaxed state, your mind is more responsive to suggestion. In a therapeutic setting, the suggestions are designed to help you change unhelpful thought patterns. Hypnosis is essentially a simple down to earth and common-sense therapy. For example, by relaxing, thinking positively, and picturing your goals, hypnosis can help you to progressively improve your habitual feelings and behaviour.

I am a qualified counsellor and naturally the counselling skills are integrated within my hypnotherapy practice.  I work within the professional and ethical guidelines of my registering bodies.

Hypnotherapy can help with an enormous range of different issues.

  • Anxiety/panic attacks
  • Irritable bowel syndrome and Pain Management
  • Insomnia/Overcoming sleep disorders
  • Treating certain psychosomatic or stress-related illnesses
  • Confidence building
  • Addictions/Stopping Smoking
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Phobias/fears
  • Self esteem
  • Social anxiety
  • Compulsions/obsessions/nail biting

If you don't see your issue on this brief list it is always worth asking if hypnotherapy can help.  It improves general well being and self confidence.  As you take the skills of self hypnosis away with you to use as and when you choose.

Further information

Chances are, when you think of hypnotherapy, you either imagine a swinging pocket watch or a hapless audience member being made to cluck like a chicken on stage in the name of entertainment. Neither of these preconceptions is true.

Cognitive Behavioural hypnotherapy combines cognitive behavioural therapy and hypnosis with theories based on modern neuroscience. CBH is a collaborative process, not simply ‘done to you’. The object is to enable you to essentially become your own therapist over time learning self-hypnosis and mindfulness thus leading to more helpful ways of thinking and behaving.

Over the course of the sessions, you will learn relaxation techniques which you can apply yourself and then hypnosis and self hypnosis to deepen the effects and heighten feelings of confidence. The client therapist collaboration is very important.  Goal setting is an important part of the process it is important to be specific and have a time frame to work within.  The principle of CBH is when you are fully relaxed and in a hypnotic state this is when you are more susceptible to positive suggestion.

Therefore each treatment is bespoke for each client as we are all different and have our own unique ways of seeing our worlds even if it is unhelpful at times. When choosing my training it was imperative to me that the training I undertook was based on theory and evidence which it very much is. I studied at the UK College of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy in London. My accredited Hypnotherapy training is the only externally verified hypnotherapy training programme approved by The British Psychological Society Learning Centre. I am a registered Practitioner with the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR). I am fully insured for professional and public liability. Hypnotherapy is recognised by the British Medical Association (BMA), the American Medical Association and the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). Hypnotherapy has proven to be a safe and effective alternative that can help with a wide range of problems in just a few hours of treatment.
