About me

My name is Michelle and I’m a Clinical Hypnotherapist providing a private hypnotherapy practice in the Bedale area and surrounding towns and villages here in North Yorkshire.

I help people who are dealing with anxiety, stress, fears, phobias and bad habits, selective eating conditions,   IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome*) and sleep issues – in fact hypnotherapy can help everyone.

I also teach self hypnosis for those people who want to take more control.  Self hypnosis is ideal for learning and practising relaxation and self hypnosis can be ‘super charged’ to accommodate and deal with most things such as controlling your weight, managing stress and anxieties, fears and our pain levels.  Hypnotherapy can really be incredibly powerful.

My background is  in psychology – coaching and career development.    I have an Honours Degree in Psychology and a Masters Degree in Occupational Psychology (also known as Organisational Psychology because it deals with workplace behaviours).  Consequently, I understand the complex relationship of how the mind and body ‘should work’ together ...... and more importantly – why it often doesn’t.

I help people achieve their goals using a combination of skills and approaches: hypnotherapeutic approaches, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), Intensive Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT), Neuro-Linguistic-Programming (NLP) and EFT.  This approach helps to realign  subconscious and conscious minds, thoughts and behaviours. The results are that people love the life they have, feeling positive and in control.

Hypnotherapy may seem daunting and perhaps a little scary to some.  But it really shouldn’t be.  We can go into an hypnotic state daily without  any help  and even without  realising for example, daydreaming or whilst driving when you suddenly realise momentarily that you didn’t know where you were, or that you can't remember part of the journey.  In fact, people slip into an hypnotic state many times throughout their day.

However, with hypnotherapy we can access the part of your mind that operates subconsciously (ie. the part that works without our input) and connect with it.  Thereby, therapy during hypnosis can modify  subconscious drives that make us behave in a particular way.   With hypnotherapy changes can occur at a deeper level of our consciousness (our subconscious level) to create the changes you want to make.  After all, knowing you should or shouldn’t be doing something doesn’t always make it happen.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am client centered and use a variety of techniques including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro-Linguistic Processing (NLP), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and suggestions dependent on the issue concerned.

Specialist Areas:    Depression and Irritable  Bowel Syndrome

I have additional specialised training  to help people  suffering with depression.  Following an initial consultation,  I offer a 12 week course* which develops:

  • coping skills
  • effective relationships and support networks
  • social skills
  • problem solving skills
  • realistic and acheivable goals
  • assertiveness

In addition, the course addresses negative and de-motivating thoughts and expectations.

I have specialised training in Gut Specific & Gut Directed Protocol hypnotherapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. This is a recognised and recommended course of treatment by NICE as being suitable for IBS sufferers. Prior GP diagnosis is a mandatory requirement before treatment.

I work with the IBS Network and I am in the process of setting up a local support group for people with IBS. For more details either contract me or contact the IBS Network for more details.

Other areas of hypnotherapy I deal with

I help people with emotional eating issues in addition to habitual fussy eating, food phobias and anxiety relating to new foods.

Hypnotherapy is a deeply personal process and it is important to me, that my clients feel comfortable discussing their issues.

Consequently, the first consultation is therefore longer than a standard session. It takes approximately 1-2 hours and the cost is £75.   This addition time allows us to meet and chat about any concerns you may have and to experience hypnosis. This time is useful to find out the nature of your issue, your needs and expectations. I will ask questions relating to your general health and background history and address any issues you may have relating to hypnotherapy.

Thereafter generally hypnotherapy session lasts approximately 1 hour and costs £50 per hour, paid in advance.
