Having spent 25 years working in the Department of Health and the NHS, I've spent the last 6 years working independently as a hypnotherapist, predominantly in the Cheshire area. This has included working with people to change and/or stop their habits, anxiety and phobias to name just a few. I use a variety of techniques including traditional hypnotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), neuro linguistic programming (NLP) and mindfulness.
I tailor all my treatments to the individual case, and use a combination of techniques to help you achieve the best possible result. Choosing the right therapist is an important decision, and it's vital that you feel comfortable with them. That's why I offer my "walk away and don't pay" guarantee - if you come to see me, and don't want to work with me for whatever reason, then you don't pay.
That guarantee also applies if I think that hypnotherapy isn't right for you for whatever reason. I don't ever charge people to find out they're comfortable with me, and if we don't work together I won't leave you stuck. I have a large network of other professionals that I can refer you to. After having taken the step of coming to see me I appreciate how disappointing it would be to feel back at square one.
I offer a free initial consultation with no obligation, so that you can decide if hypnotherapy is right for you. You can contact me through email on this site, or by calling me on 07713 564 245. You're in charge of the conversation, and I never keep your details to contact you unsolicited in the future.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a registered member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), I'm also recognised by and registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CHNC). Membership of both of these is dependent on me completing regular continuing professional development, and maintaining and extending my skills.
Over the years I've helped people with a very wide range of problems, from tinnitus and ear-worms to shy bladders and urge incontinence. I've successfully treated people with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, and with sleep problems from insomnia to night-terrors. I've taught people to learn to manage their anxiety and to control their anger. I've helped smokers to stop , even those who've smoked 50 cigarettes a day or ones who started at nine years old.
Whether it's IBS or drinking too much, or misphonia or hyperhidrosis I'm often asked if I've treated that condition before. The fact is that, even when I have treated previous patients, each individual’s circumstances will still be unique to them. I offer a host of transferable skills and techniques to people, rather than to treating conditions.
Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council
The CNHC encompasses many types of alternative therapy, including hypnotherapy.
In order to be admitted to the register a practitioner must have studied to the National Occupational Standards for that profession/discipline, or have reached the equivalent of the National Occupational Standards through other relevant training or at least three years of experience and been assessed by their peers.
A practitioner must also have professional insurance and agree to abide by the CNHC Code of Conduct, Performance and Ethics.
National Council for Hypnotherapy
The National Council for Hypnotherapy holds one of the largest registers of independent Hypnotherapists in the United Kingdom and strives to maintain the highest standards among its members.
There is an agreed Code of Conduct, an established Complaints & Disciplinary Procedure and all members are obliged to maintain comprehensive Public Liability & Professional Indemnity Insurance, maintain regular CPD (continuing professional development) hours, and attend Supervision when needed.
Accredited register membership
Accredited Register Scheme
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
Areas of hypnotherapy I deal with
If you have been diagnosed or suspect you may have one of the medical conditions starred above, you should consult your GP for advice, diagnosis and treatment and always inform your health professional before starting any alternative or additional therapies or treatments.
Other areas of hypnotherapy I deal with
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Following our initial contact or conversation I'll offer you an appointment. I offer the same "walk away and don't pay" guarantee to everyone - and that initial consultation will always be free.
After your initial consultation, subsequent sessions last for a full hour and start at £85, with the cost reducing over a course of treatment. The fact that they last a full hour means that we can make real progress during your sessions, reducing the number needed, and ensuring that you always leave a session feeling better than when you started.
As well my complete focus and attention for the entire hour, this also includes an mp3 or CD of your hypnotherapy session, and not something pre-recorded . This allows you to repeat the benefit of the session in the comfort of your own home, as many times as you wish, to reinforce the therapy.
Fees for smoking cessation
Smoking cessation is the only service for which I offer a package price. The session lasts for two hours, and the cost is £190 in total. I’ll also include
- a longer, personalised recording, which you can use as a support tool during your first weeks as a non-smoker
- ongoing practical and emotional support as you become a non-smoker
""I’ve not had a cigarette or the urge for one since the therapy. I didn't feel any withdrawal symptoms either. I'm looking forward to going out tonight for food and drinks and not smoking! This weird but great! Thanks for all you help!" W, Male
“I’ve known John for a few years and never thought I’d need hypnotherapy to overcome a problem.
I’ve always been afraid of heights, a problem that I’ve managed to not let rule my life. However I’d noticed that when it came to crossing bridges I was becoming agitated. This got to the stage where I would have to be in the middle lane so I could not see over the edge.
So I spoke to John and he said that he would try to help with the problem. After an initial consultation we agreed that hypnosis would be the way forward. Afterwards I felt more relaxed, and John sent me an mp3 to listen to.
The outcome of using John’s services has been a change in my attitude to heights. I can cross bridges, look over the edge of a balcony, and look down from a height without feeling vertigo.
I would recommend him without hesitation, as he has in short changed my life.” D, Male
“I recently went to see John about a recurring issue of struggling to get to sleep. John spent a lot of time to find out the reasons why I found it difficult to relax. His professional approach gave me full confidence in his skills and techniques to help me fully recognise and overcome my issue. Being a very out-going and quite “hyper” person, I found John’s ability to get me to totally relax and feel comfortable sharing my experiences invaluable! I would not hesitate to recommend John, as he takes an honest look and evaluation BEFORE taking on any treatments." C, Male
“I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the recent work you did with me on mindfulness. During an exceptionally busy period in both my personal and professional life when my brain felt full to capacity, you helped me to clear away the unimportant things and focus on what needed to be done.
Many thanks for the recordings which you made for me, I now listen to them whenever I start to feel overwhelmed." S, Female
"Anyone who has tried to stop smoking can appreciate how hard it is, so I felt compelled to write this testimonial for John, having recently used his hypnotherapy service to stop smoking and it’s worked!
John is professional, friendly and took the time to understand why I smoked, what my incentive to stop smoking was and other concerns I had. John’s customer service also extended to follow up telephone calls to make sure I was alright and on track and a recording of the session should I wish to refer to it in the future.
I have no hesitation in recommending John." N, Male
"You came highly recommended, and through a combination of incisive yet un-intrusive questions (interspersed with an incredible sense of humour) you quickly determined the best way forward for me to go. You were able to put me completely at ease and helped me to cut through the unnecessary chatter that my nerves were creating.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to the most ardent of sceptics and I wish you all the very best as your business continues. Thank you so much for helping to reveal the belief I needed." K, Male
"I approached John several months ago to discuss my anxiety around public speaking. Last Tuesday I presented a workshop to local businesses and it went amazingly well. I was calm and focused, and confident in what I was doing and saying. I cannot thank John enough for the work he has done with me on this, and I have already had enquiries off the back of the workshop. That would not have happened but for John's help.
I cannot recommend John McKenzie and the services he offers highly enough." I, Female
"Working with John for only a short time enabled me to refocus on what it was I wanted to achieve in both my business and personal life, and ultimately to set me on the correct path to achieving these goals without the shackles of self-doubt weighing me down and causing me to question my objectives.
I would have no hesitation in recommending John to anyone who is looking to make changes in their mind-set that perhaps they have been wrestling with, but did not know how to go about it." L, Male
"I was so embarrassed by my phobia but you never made me feel silly or different. I’m so glad that I came to see you as at long last I can have parties for my children and take them to their friends and not panic. Thank you so much for all your help." K, Female
“A friend had told me about John helping them to stop smoking and at first I was sceptical about what he did. The first time I spoke to him on the phone though he put my mind at rest, as the questions he asked me made it obvious that he knew what he was doing and wanted to know why I wanted to quit. I was nervous about the hypnosis but he really took time to reassure me and in the end I really enjoyed it. I haven’t smoked for three months now, and can’t imagine starting again." G, Male
“Mum has asked me to email you and say how much she enjoyed her hypnotherapy session. She hasn’t felt so relaxed in years, and she’s already learning to control and get rid of her anxiety. She’s also said that she hasn’t laughed so much in a long time. A big thank you from me as well for helping mum." G, Female
"Seeing John through Skype worked better than I ever thought it could – he didn’t hypnotise me on Skype but recorded it for me straightaway afterwards and then sent it to me – it worked really well and after a couple of sessions my insomnia is much better and I’m sleeping for longer." S, Male
“I’d heard about mindfulness and was interested in learning more so went to see John. He taught me how to be more “in the moment” and not so concerned with the past or the future, without losing the bigger picture. The exercises that he gave me to do really helped, and I’m much calmer and less stressed." N, Female
