About me

I have been working with people “in crisis” for over 35 years. I originally trained as an Artist, and subsequently went on to train as an Art Psychotherapist utilising a psychodynamic / psychotherapeutic understanding of problems. Over time and through a range of training undertaken in various work roles, including child protection and adult mental health, I have moved toward a more pragmatic Solution Focused approach to enabling people to make positive changes in their lives.

Since 1993 I have worked primarily within Addiction services, initially dealing only with alcohol related difficulties. At the beginning of 2008 I became more involved and interested in working with users of other substances including opiates, cocaine, cannabis and more “novel psychoactive” substances, whilst continuing to work with alcohol related difficulties.

Over the last 9 years I have enabled many people to change their behaviour in positive ways in particular by addressing the issues underpinning their behaviour. I have utilised a specific hypnotherapy technique to enable them to deal with past traumatic experiences which previously they managed by their use of a variety of substances. I routinely work with people to help them deal with past experiences of witnessing or experiencing violence, sexual assault, combat trauma and other personal trauma.

I completed training in Clinical Hypnosis at Central England College of Hypnotherapy. For the first time in my life I am embracing self employment as a way of being able to continue to promote and enable change.

I am able to help you with; Anxiety, Addictions, Stress, PTSD, Phobias, Panic Attacks, Self Confidence, Weight Control, Trauma, Sports Performance and much more. Additionally I am a registered Quit 4 Life practitioner, this is a NHS recognised programme for Smoking Cessation

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained at Central England College and have attained the qualification of D Hyp CECCH. I have certified qualifications in:

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy
Cognitive Behavioural Hypnosis
Ericksonian Hypnosis
NLP Professional Coaching

I abide by NCH Professional Code of Ethics.
I am a member of the National Hypnotherapy Council (NCH) and the Association for Professional Hypnosis and Psychotherapy (APHP)

I have extensive experience working with addictions and the underlying conditions that maintain it, particularly trauma.  I have enabled many clients to change their reliance on substances by addressing the factors underpinning their use.  I am aware that many clients have experienced either directly or indirectly violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, combat situations and other traumatic events.  By enabling the patterns for the trauma to be dissipated, the function of the substance use is changed, thus enabling either a reduction or cessation of use.

Further information

I first met John Drinkwater when I was suffering with post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and alcohol misuse (as a way of “coping with life”). Prior to that I had had an eating disorder, exercise addiction, self harming and suicidal tendencies and behaviour.

Despite 13 years of psychiatric intervention and medication, 9 years of psychotherapy and numerous self help groups I was stuck in the rut of self destruction. John didn’t want to go into great details about my past (which in my experience is like reliving it) - so that was good in itself although he has to know some ‘starting point’ I think ) - instead he used this “rewind method’ where basically you go into a deep state of relaxation and then “see” all that went on as an outsider observer. He gets you to fast forward and rewind over and over and I can HONESTLY say that the trauma of rape, child loss, abuse beyond imagination was eradicated in one session. I have no idea how he does it (given the fact I am so interested in psychology) but his results are truly amazing.

I have recently seen John as other events have occurred since our initial consultation in around 2013 - some 5 years ago, He is one in a million and if he can sort out me - he WILL sort out you too. Don’t let your past haunt you. I now want to see him to rebuild my self confidence and self esteem. I will post the before and after results.

Phobia Hypnosis
I had hypnotherapy with John to treat my phobia of Bangs (ie. Balloons/fireworks etc) I didn't realise just how much it impacted on my life until I spoke about it. This has been something I have battled since early childhood and at times is not only mentally affected but also could be physically debilitating in extreme. John was so professional and re-assuring he put me at ease. The hypnotherapy far exceeded my expectations and still wows me to this day. The results are subtle but very positive. Thanks John
