What is hypnotherapy and Solution Focused Brief Therapy?

Solution Focused Brief Therapy deals in solutions, not problems, it is focused and not forced. Hypnotherapy is a safe, powerful psychotherapeutic tool which can be used to break the negative cycle of depression and anxiety. It can help with: addictions, anger, blood pressure, weight control, exam nerves, lack of confidence, insomnia, IBS, relationship/marital difficulties, migraine, nail biting, nightmares, obsessions, panic attacks, fears, phobias, stress and many more.

Hypnotherapy uses the application of hypnotic techniques to bring about therapeutic change and is a very pleasant and relaxing experience. Conditions such as anxiety, depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), agoraphobia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and migraines are all ways that excess or sustained stress can affect our well-being. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) tackles these conditions by reducing anxiety and helping to regain a sense of perspective; once anxiety is under control many troublesome symptoms are alleviated. The therapy encourages positive thinking by helping you to focus on solutions to problems, rather than dwelling on the problems themselves. Clients usually find their sleep patterns improve and motivation, confidence and self-esteem are all restored.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy utilises the clinically-proven techniques of CBT, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, NLP and other approaches and combines them with the state of trance to help people make significant positive changes within a relatively short period of time. Resolving unwelcome habits and thought patterns at a subconscious level means that hypnosis literally helps the parts other approaches can’t reach!

The approach focuses on the present and the future and not the past. Treatment is tailored to each client and a programme of therapy is designed according to your preferences, your personality and your needs.

All interventions have a profound affect on the way our problems are both viewed and dealt with. A major re-evaluation takes place. They are also second to none as a route to greater self- knowledge enabling us to become the person we were always meant to be.

About me...

I completed my training at The Clifton Practice, one of the leading hypnotherapy centres in the South West where I gained a Diploma in Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy (DHP and HPD). I have also obtained a diploma in Solution Focused Therapy Skills for hypnotherapists (SFBT Hyp).

I am a member of the National Council for Hypnotherapists (NCH) and a committee member of the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapists (AfSFH). As a member of these associations I adhere to a strict code of ethics. The HPD is a nationally recognised qualification at level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NCFE) ; this is an endorsement of the quality, amount and level of learning; and the SFBT Hyp is a Level 5 Award.

In 2013 I obtained the SFBT Sup Hyp which is a Level 5 award and means I am a qualified supervisor for other therapists.

I am also a member of the CNHC (Complimentary & Natural Healthcare Council) Dept. Heath registered therapist and my registration number is: 000096-B11.

I am passionate about helping people; I have been a teacher for over 12 years and really enjoyed the pastoral, caring side of the teaching role. I now successfully work with teenagers and young people as an area of special interest and have found my teaching career has afforded me a wide range of experienced to aid work in this area.  Having used hypnotherapy myself to make immense changes in my own life I decided I could help more people by making a career change. My first encounter with hypnotherapy was to stop smoking, something I had been trying to do unsuccessfully for years; I found it easy with hypnotherapy. Due the success I had seen with smoking I again turned to hypnotherapy to help manage pain and aid healing with major surgery; another success. Since my first encounter with this therapy I have gone from strength to strength and met many others who have done so too.

Self hypnosis for childbirth is a fabulous experience.  I would be teaching you the tools of hypnobirthing and self-hypnosis for you to use during your labour. The course is quite intensive and does require commitment and practise but the benefits are amazing for you, and for your baby.  The course is a lovely experience and as well as dealing with the birth it also helps with bonding and coping skills for those early weeks after your baby is here.  Benefits include a more relaxed baby afterwards too, hypnobirthing mothers report that their babies sleep well and are generally calm. Birthing partners are very welcome to attend the sessions too.

You will also receive various handouts, a relaxation CD and and an 8 track CD that has tracks to listen to at different stages of your pregnancy and labour.  I am also able to work with your birthing partner by providing keywords for them to use and further techniques to use during the labour. I will also liaise with your midwifery team.

The course is 4 - 5 sessions after the initial consultation.  Sessions are £60 each.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnosis?

Put simply hypnosis is the natural harnessing of focused thought, this is coupled with Solution Focused Behavioural Therapy ((SFBT), so focused thought on what you want and so therefore finding your solution.

Are there some people who cannot go in to trance?

No, we all go in and out of trance throughout the day, like when you watch TV and miss a bit or drive a familiar route and miss a bit. Trance is like daydreaming but you do have to want to be relaxed.

Will I be aware of what is happening?
Yes, at all times.

Will I fall asleep? No, but you will feel very relaxed.

Will I lose control?

No, trance is just deep concentration, you are focusing intently on one thing but you can bring your self around to focus on something else whenever you want to. Again, to think of driving a car, you may be daydreaming about what to have for dinner but if something ran out in front of you you would re-focus and apply the brake.

How many sessions will I need?
This is very much dependent on the issue and your own level of motivation. Smoking is one session, phobias are 3 sessions, issues such as long standing depression etc. may take 10-12 sessions. Childbirth is typically between 4 and 6 sessions. However each treatment is tailored to each client and the programme of therapy designed according, it is not a one size fits all approach.

Can I get stuck in trance?
No, you can become fully alert at any time you choose to.
