What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention. In a relaxed state, your mind is more responsive to suggestion. In a therapeutic setting, the suggestions are designed to be beneficial to help you change unhelpful and largely unconscious thought patterns which are laid down in the emotional, limbic system.
Hypnotherapy is a combination of Psychotherapy and Hypnosis. The Psychotherapy in itself is extremely beneficial and its effects are enhanced by the application of Hypnosis, which enables the subconscious mind to make beneficial changes.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process and it is important to understand that change happens because you want it to and because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen. You are not expected or required to talk about distressing details in order to get the benefits of this type of hypnotherapy.
The initial consultation is free of charge and is designed to assess what you want to achieve, how hypnotherapy can help you and how many sessions you are likely to need.
Subsequent Hypnotherapy sessions involve much more than Hypnosis. During the first part of each session we’ll talk about the progress you have made and I’ll be encouraging you to express yourself positively, focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on upsetting problems.
I’ll help you to imagine your own desired future; a future where you have an extremely personal perspective on the quality of your life and achievements. I’ll then guide you into a relaxed state of Hypnosis so that we can consolidate what we have discussed.
Clients sometimes comment about how “ordinary” Hypnosis feels – it’s not unlike daydreaming – you can often hear everything that is being said whilst in a deeply relaxed state. In fact, you could think of it as guided daydreaming. In addition to the work during hypnotherapy sessions, I also provide you with a recording for use at home, which can help speed up the process.

Training, qualifications & experience
I trained at the renowned Clifton Hypnotherapy Practice in Bristol, in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. I have the Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH) from the Clifton practice and the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD).
Before training as a hypnotherapist I have trained and continue to work as a teacher (of music, trained at the Royal Academy of Music, London); as a music therapist (trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London) and recently as a prison officer, with people from all walks of life, often at a very low point in life and health.
This broad range of experience has informed my approach to working with adults and children experiencing many problematic conditions and problems, not just of health but of performance and achieving.
My hypnotherapy training has added a new and enormously valuable dimension to my own life and skills, all of which I use to full effect in my practice. On a personal level, I'm excited to report that since training as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I have lost 3 stones in weight which removed my previous type 2 diabetic status.

I just thought I’d let you know how my ABRSM piano performance assessment went today. Having spent most of February in a meltdown over the thought of it (!) I’ve really worked hard on taking a more positive approach, listening to your recordings and just working on some of the things we discussed. My practise has been going better over the past week and I was in a positive frame of mind when I got there today. I really got the shakes but it didn’t matter. I was able to control my playing despite them which has been a bit of a revelation to me! It wasn’t perfect but I felt it was a sound and largely musical performance and I had some lovely verbal and written feedback. Hopefully having done it once without it being a disaster it will take a bit of the anxiety out of it in future. So thank you Helen - you have really helped me with this. Feeling so consumed by my health anxiety I questioned the effects of hypnotherapy - it was something I was sceptical about as I feared the unknown. Very early on in my sessions my opinion changed completely. Helen helped me to understand the mind and the anatomical structures of the brain that influence feelings of anxiety. Having completed the sessions I feel at such ease with myself knowing that when I have off days, which are scarce, I know how to better manage them and change the way I think. Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy
The Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH) was set up to provide information about a modern form of Hypnotherapy and its associated benefits to members of the public. The main aim of the AfSFH is to spread awareness of the benefits of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. Its secondary aim is to support Hypnotherapists in their businesses by encouraging good practice and self-care.

Hypnotherapy can enhance the well-being of individuals diagnosed with serious medical conditions, but should not take the place of medical treatment and advice. If you have been diagnosed with - or suspect you may have - any of these conditions, please speak to your doctor before starting hypnotherapy.

I charge £70 for a session (50 minutes - hour). I offer a 15% discount to public sector employees and 50% to benefit recipients, plus a small number of free places to students.
You would expect to work towards agreed goals set by yourself and need as many sessions as required, depending on progress made, generally at weekly intervals. For most conditions, this could be between 8 - 12, but equally, possibly more or less. Things can change quickly with SFH compared to counselling or psychotherapy.
The initial Consultation is free and we discuss your problem/s and what your hopes for the future are. I also deliver some information related to how hypnotherapy sessions will help you in this process, with interesting details about how your brain works and how evidence based knowledge can help us understand how to retrain the brain for our benefit.
#Some conditions, such as phobias, specific fears etc will require fewer sessions.
#I deliver a one-off smoking-cessation session (1 1/2 - 2 hours) for £145. This can include follow-up support and a recording of your Hypnotherapy session to use at home.
#For weight-loss I have developed an individual 6 session programme costing £500 (payment up-front) where clients attend for 1½ hr sessions following achievement of their individual weight-loss goals (not weekly). Support can also be provided between sessions. This programme does not include a diet plan as it aims to retrain your mindset in relation to your lifestyle, exercise and food choices. This provides greater chance of success and maintenance of your desired weight/body size. Please contact me for more details. Alternatively, I have begun Group Weight-loss sessions that makes the cost considerably less, depending on the group numbers.
