About me

What do you need help with?

Consider how you are feeling at this moment in time.............?

Alive, brave, content, daring, energetic, full of life, gratified, happy, inspired, jolly, keen, liberated, marvellous, noticed, OK, peaceful, qualified, rejuvenated, special, thankful, unafraid, victorious, well, x-rated, youthful, zany.............????

If not - why not? Maybe you are experiencing emotions which are negative, sad and fearful, - ones that cause you to dwell on the worrying things in your life? Would you like your feelings and experiences of life to be different? Can you remember a time when it was different? Do you have aspirations and dreams you want to achieve?

Why don't you try making your own A-Z list of positive feelings and make a note of them...... They will be very particular to you and your circumstances. This will be useful in deciding what you want to change and remind you of how you want to feel....

Make contact with me, either by email or phone, so that together we can begin this life enhancing process. Please see what customers have experienced in the Testimonials below.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention. In a relaxed state, your mind is more responsive to suggestion. In a therapeutic setting, the suggestions are designed to be beneficial to help you change unhelpful and largely unconscious thought patterns which are laid down in the emotional, limbic system.

Hypnotherapy is a combination of Psychotherapy and Hypnosis. The Psychotherapy in itself is extremely beneficial and its effects are enhanced by the application of Hypnosis, which enables the subconscious mind to make beneficial changes.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process and it is important to understand that change happens because you want it to and because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen. You are not expected or required to talk about distressing details in order to get the benefits of this type of hypnotherapy.

The initial consultation is free of charge and is designed to assess what you want to achieve, how hypnotherapy can help you and how many sessions you are likely to need.

Subsequent Hypnotherapy sessions involve much more than Hypnosis. During the first part of each session we’ll talk about the progress you have made and I’ll be encouraging you to express yourself positively, focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on upsetting problems.

I’ll help you to imagine your own desired future; a future where you have an extremely personal perspective on the quality of your life and achievements. I’ll then guide you into a relaxed state of Hypnosis so that we can consolidate what we have discussed.

Clients sometimes comment about how “ordinary” Hypnosis feels – it’s not unlike daydreaming – you can often hear everything that is being said whilst in a deeply relaxed state. In fact, you could think of it as guided daydreaming. In addition to the work during hypnotherapy sessions, I also provide you with a recording for use at home, which can help speed up the process.

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained at the renowned Clifton Hypnotherapy Practice in Bristol, in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. I have the Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH) from the Clifton practice and the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD).

Before training as a hypnotherapist I have trained and continue to work as a teacher (of music, trained at the Royal Academy of Music, London); as a music therapist (trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London) and recently as a prison officer, with people from all walks of life, often at a very low point in life and health.

This broad range of experience has informed my approach to working with adults and children experiencing many problematic conditions and problems, not just of health but of performance and achieving.

My hypnotherapy training has added a new and enormously valuable dimension to my own life and skills, all of which I use to full effect in my practice. On a personal level, I'm excited to report that since training as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I have lost 3 stones in weight which removed my previous type 2 diabetic status.

Testimonials   (what customers have told me)

I suffer with anxiety especially around my fitness test which I have to do annually at work. I had some sessions with Helen. I also listened to a recording of a session whilst doing my training and my test! This helped me to relax, breathe and take my mind to another place instead of panicking. I passed my test easily which I never believed I would do!! Thanks Helen

"I wanted to try hypnotherapy as a way of challenging a tendency to low self-esteem. I found Helen to be an engaging, valuable & compassionate guide in this undertaking. Meeting with Helen helped me, firstly, realise that I had reached out because of a specific inner conflict at the time. The hypnotherapy challenged my beliefs about myself, helped me to recognise how (unhelpful) assumptions can take root & acted as a disruption to the comfortable patterns I had acquired. In the 3 months since our sessions I feel less conflicted, achieved my immediate goal & I continue to build on the progress I have made. I would recommend the experience to anyone who thinks they may benefit."

I just thought I’d let you know how my ABRSM piano performance assessment went today. Having spent most of February in a meltdown over the thought of it (!) I’ve really worked hard on taking a more positive approach, listening to your recordings and just working on some of the things we discussed. My practise has been going better over the past week and I was in a positive frame of mind when I got there today. I really got the shakes but it didn’t matter. I was able to control my playing despite them which has been a bit of a revelation to me! It wasn’t perfect but I felt it was a sound and largely musical performance and I had some lovely verbal and written feedback. Hopefully having done it once without it being a disaster it will take a bit of the anxiety out of it in future. So thank you Helen - you have really helped me with this. I really didn’t think I’d be able to do it and am absolutely delighted (and a little bit shocked) that I was able to carry out a respectable performance today.

(Jane, 52, pianist)

“On a more cheery note, your therapy is working. This morning was a huge test for me and I am definitely more able to deal with the 8-legged creatures better! This morning I came down to a granddad spider in my sink – I calmly placed a cup over him and took him outside into the back garden. Normally I would have killed him instantly woohoo!!"

(Chris, spider phobia since aged 5)

"I am very grateful for all the help you gave my daughter - she understands what she needs to keep doing and wouldn't have got there without your help. You were incredibly kind and patient with her, giving us both hope when there didn't seem to be much. Thank you doesn't really seem enough."

(Janey, 10 years, talented gymnast, traumatised after a fall in training - achieved gold medal in first competition following a year away from competing)

"Hypnotherapy with Helen has helped me hugely. With a long history of depression, anxiety and poor sleep I have tried a myriad of talk therapies which sadly did nothing to alleviate my problems. Hypnotherapy has a completely different emphasis - not dwelling on past traumas, which actually left me feeling much worse. After putting into practise what Helen taught me I started to feel not only better about my life as it is now, but started to see that my life has a brightness to it that I thought had gone forever. My sleep is greatly improved too and my reduced anxiety means I am more able to cope with stressful situations. Helen is a warm, caring and confident professional who is passionate about the benefits of hypnotherapy."

"Helen's sessions helped me out so much. I first started visiting her to get help for symptoms of anxiety, and after just a couple of sessions I could feel a noticeable difference in my stress levels, tension, and pain. I felt calmer and, dare I say, more relaxed than I had in a very long time. Helen was also able to help me to overcome my fear of flying. For years I had been a mess before getting on a plane, and most flights resulted in a full-blown panic attack. I was amazed - I flew to the U.S.A and back without even breaking a sweat! I had reached the point where I thought I'd never be able to manage a flight longer than two hours, yet I was able to sit back and relax in peace on an 11 hour flight back from Los Angeles. Thank you, Helen!"

(Trudi, 28)

Feeling so consumed by my health anxiety I questioned the effects of hypnotherapy - it was something I was sceptical about as I feared the unknown. Very early on in my sessions my opinion changed completely. Helen helped me to understand the mind and the anatomical structures of the brain that influence feelings of anxiety. Having completed the sessions I feel at such ease with myself knowing that when I have off days, which are scarce, I know how to better manage them and change the way I think.  Hypnotherapy was an extremely positive experience and I would wholeheartedly recommend working with Helen.

(Natasha, 21)

After developing an extensive rash, caused primarily by stress, I tried hypnotherapy.  I looked forward to sessions and by the 2nd visit identified how I needed to change my approach.  Now the rash has gone, I am less anxious and have a positive approach to dealing with life's challenges.
