Dr Elizabeth Croton
I qualified as a doctor at Birmingham University way back in 2000 and have been working as a NHS GP, a stones throw away in Selly Oak, since 2008.
In addition to my work as a GP, I have an interest in complementary medicine and have completed additional training as a hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner and Thought Field Therapy (diagnosis) practitioner.
My interest in hypnotherapy started at the tender age of 16 when my mother took me along to see a friend of hers (a fellow medical doctor who also practiced hypnotherapy). I had just started my GCSEs and was absolutely terrified of exams for some inexplicable reason. I found the session incredibly relaxing and left clutching a audio cassette (remember those?) with the session recorded onto it. That session helped me through the exams and finally put my nerves to bed. It also left a lasting impression on me as to the effectiveness of hypnotherapy as a therapy tool. Many years (and exams later), I completed my hypnotherapy practitioner diploma in Manchester and have been offering hypnotherapy sessions from my practice in Selly Oak and my home in Weoley Hill.
I offer a full range of hypnotherapy services covering a range of common challenges. All sessions are personalised to the client's needs. I use an integrated approach to help my clients overcome their challenge using hypnotherapy together with elements of Thought Field Therapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) where appropriate. My medical background enables me to understand my clients' medical needs and I am happy to work with your general practitioner to help you find the most appropriate solution for your particular difficulty. I am happy to record sessions and I provide clients with either a MP3 or CD (included in the session price) to take home and use for aftercare. I can help with a number of difficulties but a particular area of expertise for me are challenges facing students (exam difficulties, stress, anxiety, public speaking and depression). Many of the patients registered with our practice are students from the local Universities and Colleges and so I am very familiar with students and their needs.
Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is a totally unique form of therapy. It was discovered and developed by Dr. Roger Callahan, a Californian clinical psychologist with over 40 years experience. It is a natural, drug-free, non-invasive system that eliminates the cause of difficult emotions. It involves tapping on acupuncture points whilst thinking of a particular challenge. The therapist doesn't need to know specific details of what the client is thinking about, making it ideal for traumatic memories.
I use TFT to help clients overcome grief, anxiety, agoraphobia, trauma and phobias. Typically after a successful treatment, clients find that they can think of their difficulty but it no longer holds the emotional charge for them that it once did. When treating grief, TFT will not affect any memories that you have of your loved one. In fact, after a session of TFT, clients often recall that they can remember, previously forgotten, happy memories that had been blocked by the painful memories. TFT is also incredibly quick with difficulties frequently resolved in as little as 20-30 minutes and the effects are long lasting.
More information about the technique can be found on www.thoughtfieldtherapy.co.uk.
I am proficient in the use of the Rewind Technique. This is also sometimes known as the Fast Phobia cure or the V/K Dissociation technique. This is a startlingly effective method for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic attacks and phobias. The Rewind Technique uses the client's imagination to experience "rewinding" of the traumatic memory. One of the great benefits of the technique is that the therapist does not need to know any details of the memories, greatly relieving the discomfort often involved in the re-telling. It is thought that the process works by allowing the traumatic memory to be re-processed by the brain and re-classified as non-threatening.
More information about the Rewind Technique can be found at
I have also trained with Kevin Laye who has developed Psy-tap. This is a fantastic collection of therapeutic techniques which work FAST (sometimes in minutes) to resolve longstanding phobias, traumas and addictions. This is a very exciting therapeutic field which is constantly evolving. Typically many problematic conditions can be treated sucesssfully within a single session - please ask for details
I am available for sessions on Mondays and Thursdays during the day time and for evenings and weekends on request.

Hypnotherapy is a very safe and effective treatment but it may not be suitable for everyone. Before booking sessions, I will arrange for us to have a brief confidential conversation over the phone. This is to check that I am the right therapist for you.
