I am a registered mental health nurse of 25 years experience of treating and supporting individuals with mental health issues ranging from anxiety, low mood, and also long term issues such as schizophrenia and bipolar.
Hypnotherapy is not suitable for long term mental health issues such as long standing depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders and personality disorders. These need specialist interventions from a community mental health team.
After much thought and research, I chose hypnotherapy as a second career based on the evidence regarding it's effectiveness in helping people to manage anxiety, stress, panic attacks, phobias, poor sleep and low mood. Other issues may arise during treatment and these will be discussed and the best course of action can be decided by the clients and myself- This may involve advice to contact your GP for referral to specialist service.
These are very common conditions and all relate to each other- Anxiety and stress are obvious causes for poor sleep. Likewise poor sleep can lead to stress and anxiety as fatigue affects our resilience to deal with stress. This can lead to low mood and long term depression. Hypnotherapy is not a cure for these conditions but can provide the person with an effective way of managing these conditions- Over the years I have found that if a person is able to confidently manage their issues, it can no longer is a problem. My role is to work alongside the person using hypnotherapy to enable them to manage their issues so that they can deal with an anxiety provoking situation. This also includes predictably anxiety provoking scenarios such as public speaking, driving tests and job interviews.
I also have an interest in pain management using hypnotherapy- There is a lot of research documented on the internet that show it's effectiveness This took place in America and Europe and focused on long term conditions such as Arthritis and was found to effective in dealing with emotional distress caused by pain- The link between pain and anxiety is well documented and hypnotherapy aims to break this link and reduce the pain to a manageable level- again this is not a cure but a way of attempting to improve quality of life. I also aim to carry out this treatment in the clients home so that there are no worries about the environment or getting home after the session. Being at home should help the client to relax and allow them to come around from the hypnosis in their own time in a relaxed environment.
